Saw Ghost at an all ages show back in 2016. Little guy, maybe 4-5 years old was dressed up like Papa Emeritus and was getting high fived and 🤘🤘 like crazy. Kid was loving it.
I’m a huge fan of the fact that at the beginning when they show up at the party it’s a little bit of a shout-out to Rocky Horror Picture Show with the weird guy who answers the door. Remember everyone Papa Emeritus loves us all. We find out later in the video that the dark haired guy is Papa and the woman he dances with is a younger version of Sister Imperator. Such a great song by such a criminally underrated band! The faceless ghouls have been a lot of different folks under the mask. Dave Grohl actually did a few shows as a faceless ghoul on drums for kicks.
Ghost have it down man. Stacey dancing and nodding her head tells you all you need to know. I’ve always heard that if you’re making music the key is to get the girls to get up and move, and if you can do that, you’re probably going places. 🤘
There is so much lore and backstory to this band. Ghost has webisodes or what is called Chapters 1-17. They even have a full cinematic 2 1/2 hr Ghost movie coming out June 20th this year. Sister Imperatour made Papa Nihil....you need to deep dive into the lore...it's great fun
Everyone's given you a good synopsis of the lore. This song, and 'Mary On A Cross', are probably the most poppy ones Ghost does.But even their heaviest ones are catchy as hell. Try *Cirice,* which is their most iconic song, and won a Grammy. And the video is fun, too!
Yeah, it's a great instrumental piece, however as such it doesn't lend itsself too much for a reaction video. I personally love it and can't suggest it highly enough.
If you want lore look for "Chapter Eight: Kiss The Go-Goat". There's 16 other chapters, but you asked for lore and more music, this is both and dove-tails with Dance Macabre. 😁
Actually, at the party in the video, there are a huge number of celebrities from music, film and sports participating. Two of the most recognised is Kirk Hammet from Metallica and Phil Anselmo from Pantera, amongst others. Kirk and James Hetfield from Metallica are huge Ghost fans for a long time.
That's not true sadly, there is another (first) version of the video for this song that Ghost released, this video has more of a social media/TikTok vertical format, it shows video shorts of different celebrities hearing/reacting to Dance Macabre, in that video you can see Kirk Hammett, Charlie Benante (Anthrax/Pantera), M. Shadows the lead singer of AVX7, Chino Moreno (Deftones), Phil Anselmo and some others rocking to it

Love Ghost :) Got all their albums on vinyl,seen them live 4-5 times, they always deliverr great shows. If you havent seen the video for Life Eternal yet you must check it out :) Then you get an idea how the concerts are like,all the fans dressing up :)
The first time I heard ghost. I was trying to find words to explain that i have heard everything in this before just not all together in one song. Then the first comment I read was "Mom your 80's music got into my Devils music." And I have never heard a better summery of Ghost's music since.
Ghost are amazing and Tobias Forge is a genius TBH! Dance Macabre (Dance of the Dead - ish) is another great track that works on multiple levels. This track is from their 2018 album Prequelle, themed around the great plague/Black Death which decimated medieval Europe & also how the Church took advantage of that to gain more control. As other people have explained, the video is a nod to Rocky Horror and other 80s/90s sp00py films and shows the origin of character Papa Nihil in 1969, who is closely related to the current incarnation of Papa Emeritus (the fourth, who was Cardinal Copia for the Prequelle album cycle but got promoted for the following Impera album). The song to me initially came off as a romantic "this is our last night together" song for me but when plugged into the context of the album as a whole, it can be interpreted as doomed lovers spending one last night together where "there's a sting in the way you kiss me" changes from having undertones of the kissee (is that even a word?!) suspecting that it's their last kiss before breaking up to being someone who loves the kisser so much that they're willing to die with them by contracting the(ir) plague. Rats! is very similar; on a casual listen it's clearly about rats and their fleas spreading the plague, but if you pay attention to the very first verse the context changes to refer to priests of the Church instead. Ghost are absolutely fantastic - I'm glad that you've found a band where one person puts so much effort into realising their vision and thoroughly appreciated it. :D
Great reaction Stacey!! I took to this song IMMEDIATELY upon hearing it! There's such an infectious vibe, rhythm & hook there - it's an earworm...and then comes the video!! For a lover of the 'macabre', this is right up my alley!! Ghost has their tongue placed firmly in cheek - it's glam rock as far as I'm concerned, like Twisted Sister (even brinking on 'shock' rock like Alice Cooper) - perhaps the only thing 'ABBA'-ish is that they're both from Sweden! Future recommendations: Miasma (instrumental with great sax solo! Comes right before Dance Macabre), Rats, He Is, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, Year Zero, Cirice, Witch Image, Call Me Little Sunshine...so much evil goodness!! Cheers!
brief synopsis from the artist-Europe is in turmoil from the 1340's plague. People are dying in the streets. Pubs are full of people partying like it's the last night of their life. The song captures this in a disco dance way.
The whole album where this song is about the medevil plague in europe. And Dance Macabre is one last dance before we die. A lot people even chistians. They thought god hated them. The plague came from rats.
Would love for you to do a reaction to "Ghost the story so far". It explains the lore, the change of costumes, the different Pappas and will give you more perspective on why Ghost is different from anything else. You will love them more I can guarantee that.
Ghost has so many awesome songs like marry on a cross , bible and many more. A band that's not out just for the money but just enjoying t creating music and having fun with their fans is so cool
I'd say you should watch the video for "Kiss the Go-Goat" next. It will make this whole "The Beginning" thing start to make more sense. As Ghost became more popular Tobias started to create fictional stories around the band. For instance, on their first album his identity is Papa Emeritus, then on their second album he changed the design of the Papa-look and now he called himself Papa Emeritus II and in interviews said things like "Yeah, the old Papa was a real asshole, so we got rid of him". When the album this song is on (the 4th album) came out he took upon another personality, Cardinal Copia. Copia was later raised to Papa-status. So he's created this little universe where there is a fictional history about the evolution of Ghost and the alleged satanic cult behind the band. All tongue in cheek.
The fact you DONT have a musical background makes it so much better. I am so tired of hearing vocal coaches only hear voice mechanics and pay no attention to the music at all.
I mean, Ghost's 3 first albums are the best they've ever made, and then there's 1 or 2 decent songs on the newer albums, but out of all of the songs, when I first heard Dance Macabre on the radio, here in Sweden, as Ghost is a Swedish band, I hadn't heard the song before, and I couldn't even make out the lyrics because the volume was so quiet in the taxi cab, and I immediately knew that it was a Ghost Song, because this is the most Ghost, Ghost Song out there.

It is basiclly Tobias Forges project, he can play all instrument. some songs he is the only writher in. In the start he wanted another swedish singer for the project. But he didnt want to do it. So tobias had to sing himself
I don't know what to say about Ghost. They enjoy defying genres, and it shows in the genius of the songwriting. It takes a lot of work to distill a song idea down to "no boring parts" like they do. They aren't like any other band I know except other theatrical, genre-defying groups like Pink Floyd, Bowie, or Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. What makes Ghost stand apart from those guys is their horror aesthetic, which I love. I think Tobias Forge should be composing film soundtracks (if he isn't already doing that).

They used to be a bit heavier before but it was always more rock than metal. I saw an interview where he said the original idea was basically to make worship music for non-believers. Btw 'Papa Emeritus' means retired pope
They still bring the heavy. I kind of disagree with the notion that some people put out that they've gotten softer. Prequelle was probably the 'softest' album sure, but it still has Rats and Faith on it. Imperium kicks it back up with Hunter's Moon, Twenties, Respite.... I'd also slip in "Watcher in the Sky" as an old school heavy. And I feel like Call Me Sunshine fits a heavier vibe.
ghost's timeline is....wibbly-wobbly. papa, the main vocalist, gets younger with each album for awhile. they use the masks for this. this is clearly the "start" of "papa" the "anti-pope" because of the play around with time and sound styles, they are basically the only band that can release a single that was "performed" decades before it was released in the storyline (eg kiss the goat).
One song from Ghost that really needs more attention is Absolution! Not many seem to talk about it or do reactions to it. I would deeply appreciate if you checked it out sometime.

Ghost has a Movie coming out on June 20th only in select theaters but its of their concert they did in the Kia Forum this past year I'm going to it I highly recommend going to see it while you can

ABBA is Swedish pop royalty. It's a compliment, even though some metal "gatekeepers" use it as an insult. Ghost is from Sweden as well, so that is also a connection. "Cheeky" is a great term to describe Ghost. They have fun. The chorus is "I wanna Bewitch you", not 'Be With You", which is very on brand.

so apparently this song and video was inspired by parties that people threw during dark times where they would party hard and let everything out because they knew they or the people they loved could/would die tomorrow. the album this is from has the black death/plague as a kind of background theme across all the songs on the album. in the video the guy who gets the skull makeup is supposed to be Papa Nihil the first singer of ghost also the antipope in the bands fiction the album though was the introduction of cardinal Copia as the new front man of the band after papas Emeritus 1,2 and 3 on the previous albums. all of them are really Tobias in different costumes and masks the singer doesn't change just the character he plays. the album after this Called Impera, cardinal Copia was promoted to the new antipope and renamed Papa Emeritus IV after the death of Papa Nihil, they have fun papaganda videos you can watch for some of the lore.
When I first heard this song when the album was released, I immediately coined the phrase "Satanic Dance Metal" to best describe how it sound to me. *Edit - Also, this song is about the tradition of throwing a "party" during the black plague. Basicly if you caught the plague you only had a few days left to live. So people just said "fuck it" and started having parties at the end of thier life. I don't remember all the details, but it's out there if you want to read about it.

Catchy song, but is actually about the Black Death. The video is part of there origin story. Ghost have a whole set of video stories that go more in depth. The videos are hilarious, and help understand the theater that is Ghost.
I'm going to drop a bit of a lore-dump/lore history to the best of my knowledge. It's going to be a bit long, but I'll try to condense things. The significance of the events of the music video is that this party is meant to be where the line of the singers of the band started. The man that the blonde woman dances with became the first singer to sing Ghosts music, later titled Papa Nihil. Her name, or perhaps title is a better term, is Sister Imperator and she has been featured in many lore videos as well as other music videos that the band has released later on. In some of those, taking place closer to the modern day she is significantly older. It may not be immediately apparent, but this video's events are supposed to take place sometime in the 70s (I think). The other musicians in the band are known as Nameless Ghouls but they do have titles of a sort, many of which are based on elements like Fire, Water, Air etc. Sister Imperator is the leader of "The Clergy". The band are kind of the missionaries of the Clergy, spreading their teachings at their concerts. Or "Rituals" as they refer to them. Every singer is chosen by the Clergy before assuming the role, but the final say on these issues ultimately lies with Sister Imperator. The singer on the first album was called Papa Emeritus, the one on the second album Papa Emeritus II, the third album Papa Emeritus III, and the fourth album Cardinal Copia. Papa I, II, and III are all supposed to be half-brothers and the sons of Papa Nihil. Once Copia assumed the singer role the previous Papas were supposed to have been killed by Papa Nihil, Sister Imperator, and the Clergy. It isn't expressly stated but strongly implied that Copia is the son of Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator. Copia was later elevated to Pope status as Papa Emeritus IV and he is the current singer for the band. All the Papa Emeritus characters (and Copia) are played by Tobias Forge, founder and mastermind behind the band, but the lore states they are different people. I think that about covers it, without getting into specifics about which video or event signifies what particular lore fact.
Really good summary, I hope Stacey sees this because its really hard to follow all the lore if you haven't been doing it for a while, watching all the videos and following along and you've done a great job of it (although she seems to have a pretty good idea of it from her comments at the end).
If you look at the singer he much more aged. (It's a mask, Tobias Forge is 42). But he has the same face and white iris in his left eye. So I'm guessing "the beginning" is how he was created.
••• DEEPER MEANING?? This vid is a bit of the band's "lore" - the beginning of the band - previous comments spelled this out well. BUT i think this video goes a bit deeper than that - into Tobias's actual history. He uploaded the original Ghost recordings onto MySpace in March 12, 2010 and it took off instantly. After midnight the phone rang and they found out Tobias's brother had colapsed and died at his home of a undiagnosed heart condition. Tobias: "It felt like some weird trade: the band for my brother. It was like, 'This has happened, there's nothing I can do with it, I've just got to take the ball and run with it.' And I've been running with it ever since." So this video actually makes me very sad, because i suspect we are seeing the "trade" that Tobias speaks of, retold in "Ghost-lore" story form.
I once seen Ghost perform as an opener to Iron Maiden. How great is that? Speaking of which: you could react to Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera, then hear Ghost’s cover to it. 😊
Ghost has a lore, and this is supposed to be the first time Papa Nihil or zero first met sister Empirator. And these, did not obviously die of The Plague, whis the album has as a theme :-). Ghost has made several chapters that's really funny and where you can learn about the lore. Ghost "changes" singer for every album ( so far, probably a new Papa next album), but it's of cource Tobias that has been every character. Papa I, Papa II and Papa III was all Papa Nihils and, we think, Sister Imperators children. But it's a good idea to check these chapters out. Tobias is always funny.
The nod in the intro to the movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is very obvious once you've seen it. The guy opening the door has the perfect Richard O'Brien / RiffRaff posture and intonation. While I adore the movie it has NO chance of being reacted to as it is basically a musical in movie form so it will be struck down due to copyright issues in a heartbeat. Edit: in the making of video for this the female background dancers cursed the hard marble floor. They had to choreograph all women to crawl forward simultaneously so many times while smiling seductively that after they finally finished it all they were all pissed off at their hurting knees. It took far too many takes for it to be perfect.
the band has like 5 different stories on how it began, but it's only 1 dude, so who knows. I saw them back in 2018 with Metallica and Tobias was like a magician with a huge tophat and a cloak, and weirdly enough like a Jack Skellington suit and a red scarf, great show.
