Bought these. By far the best headphone i've ever heard. Complete package. Perfection... Especially the bass. Surprisingly insanely good both quality and quantity wise. Treble is sweeeeet but hot (loud in the mix so fatiguing a bit). Speed is insane. This driver plays every detail. Maybe, maybe soundstage is a bit smaller than expected but it's natural and works well with the headphone. edit: I must say this is the best and most correct review of this headphone except the part that Joshua compared the bass to the 1770 which is unfair. DT 1990 bass deserves more highlight and praise.

Do the Dekoni hybrid pads really help with bringing down the highs? I don't want to EQ the DT 1990. I want to be able enjoy listening to piano. I'm hoping these the Dekoni pads make it so I can enjoy the highs without it being fatiguing after a little bit
@markuffner7704
@markuffner7704 5 лет назад
@@ItsThatJahncke2 they have a thin layer of foam which covers the speaker and is integral to the pad. It definitely helps tame the highs quite a bit. They however totally change the sound signature of the headphone though. I personally like it, however I don't listen to piano music so I can't speak to that
@FallenUpwards

@@markuffner7704 If you are still using your 1990s, could you elaborate on how exactly (from your perception of course) those Dekoni pads "change the sound signature"? If i understood correctly, Josh mentioned them amplifying/extending the bass further and making them sound warmer? Long term i do have the 1990s on my radar as a possible contender for a new, higher budget headphone, however i am also vary of the rumoured bright highs. I recently tried 990s as my first Beyers of which the highs i did find too bright for my liking, thus these pads sound interesting. However, since they seem to be quite costly for "just" pads, i'd like to know more.

The 1990's quenched my thirst for headphones. I can safely say "I'm done". Out of all my headphones, the 1990 is the king. Get a 1990, HD6xx series model (either 600/650/660), and a good closed back like the M40x, and you are good to go. For extra, get a sweet luxury portable like the B&O H6-9, and noise canceler QC35/MDR1000x, to cover all the bases.

Hi Joshua. I bought these headphones and the Dekoni hybrid pads based largely on your recommendation. I think your comments on both are spot on. I am coming from a pair of DT 880 Pros. There is one thing that I don't recall you saying in your review that I would like to mention. The 1990's are so much more dynamic than the 880's that I am able to drop the volume from my headphone amp some 12db and still get the same impression of loudness. That will go a long way in saving my hearing.

@ZekeWaters_
@ZekeWaters_ 3 года назад
@@heebbi I have the 990's, and so far the bass has been pretty good. Not insane over the top bass that'll knock your socks off, but definitely a good healthy amount that is very enjoyable. I could imagine the 1990's would only improve on that. For the most bass, I would recommend the 770's or the 1770's if you are in that price range, closed backs for the most part have noticeably more bass, open backs are more for a balanced listening experience.

I use the FiiO Q5 that has a balanced output for up to 250 ohm headphones and takes a 2.5mm jack. I need that as otherwise the 3.5 jack output (unbalanced), suitable for up to 150 ohm headphones, is on full everything (Gain, Bass-boost, Volume) to be heard even close to loud enough! Any suggestions anyone? I want these headphones. They are amazing. The best I have ever tested. I also don't want to change my Fiio Q5 - it has all the features I like (including AptX). I've had the DT 1990 Pros for a few years (in fact I think this of one of the reviews that I watched when deciding to purchase). They're my first expensive pair of headphones so I don't have much to compare them to. I really like them, however the build quality is the issue I have with them. The metal and finish is perfect, don't get me wrong. It's the plastic parts that are the issue, specifically where the metal and plastic parts meet on the headband. They just don't last very long. I've no idea why Beyerdynamic decided to put plastic at the stress points when you bend the headphones (like when you put them on and take them off). But they just end up cracking over time. Maybe it's just my pair, but today the left side completely cracked and fell apart. I disassembled both sides and found the right side was also partially cracked and would probably also have broken shortly after. I don't think the headband mechanism is designed very well at all. I love the cups, super premium looking and feeling. Also they can get uncomfortable after a few hours of wearing them. I'm going to be trying the HiFiMan Sundara as I've heard they're great for the price and very comfortable.

Bought a pair on the back of this review, I agree with everything apart from the claim that the highs, though bright, are never sibbilant. They are very, very bright, and on tracks with already bright highs, these are unbearable to listen to. I gave them a good go with 60s folk, modern hop hop, 60s rock, 60s jazz, dubstep, 80s disco. Unfortunately the common theme was the sibbilant highs, I had to return them. I also bought a pair of Grado SR325e headphones, despite having higher treble in frequency response tests, they were not sibbilant, unfortunately they completely lacked bass, so didn't feel that fun! Both have been returned.

@DuncanRSHarvey
@DuncanRSHarvey 4 года назад
@@rsnhf.9073 Hi John, thanks for your reply... so this was my journey... I've had a pair of Sennheiser HD25s since 2007, I used to DJ professionally and, other than a few replacement parts along the way, they have served me well. The on-ear, clampy nature of them makes them unsuitable for relaxing , extended home listening, I guess most people know this. Lockdown came and I decided I needed a pair of serious cans to give my partner and my neighbours some peace and I started my search. Tried a pair if Philips Fidelio X2HRs and, though the sound was very close to what I was looking for, a nice open soundstage with a gentle v shape (from my perspective), the pads were too large and too clampy - specifically they put a weird amount of pressure on my jaw! Then I tried the DT770s - I liked the sound of these a lot, but the coiled, irreplaceable cable was a turn of. After that I tried the Sony wh-1000xm3 bluetooth headphones (I hadn't been looking for wireless, but was feeling a bit frustrated at what I had tried so far and knew these could be wired if I wanted) - I was really taken aback a how bad they sounded despite the glowing reviews. So bass heavy and muddy - so far from the entry to mid-level audiophile vibe I was looking for. I then tried these 1990 pros and the Grados, both left me frustrated as I indicated above, so close and yet so far with the Beyerdynamics, and the Grados just did not have the bass (I'm not a bass head, obviously, but I like a bit of oomf; bass exists to be heard and the Grados seemed to ignore that, as though limiting the bass was some sort of ascetic badge of honour). In the end I settled on a pair of the very boring Audio Technica ath-m50x headphones. Aesthetically they are the ugliest cans I tried, but the comfort, with a little bending outward and a pair of Brainwavz Hybrid Memory Foam Earpads, was/is great. The new pads also brought a little bit more of an open sound stage with more natural bass than the stock pads. I look at them as the stop-gap towards the perfect pair of headphones - my partner was going a little crazy with me constantly trying new headphones so I thought I better settle on something for now! If you can suggest anything with a similar sound but with a more minimal/high-quality aesthetic (I admit, looks are important to me, sound comes first, but I want the object to look good) and a bit more clarity, I'm all ears... pun intended!

For my recording studio I used the Beyer 990's for a long time. Upgrading to the 1990's was a nice improvement. The high's were a little more controlled, the bass was more solid and there is a nice sound stage. The headphones come with 2 ear cups. One is more analytical and flat which is good for studio use. The other ear pads add a little more bass and can be better suited for just listening to music. I really like these headphones a lot. The one problem is on certain recordings the sss on vocals are too much as well as the cymbals being too forward. However on older recordings you don't have that much of an issue. However on the Beatles remastered music I found this issue on several records. The Sennheiser 660s in comparison is a little more even with lows, mids, and highs. It does not have as much high end sparkle and is a little more controlled on the top end so you don't get those annyoing sss on vocals or cymbals. I really like the Sennheiser a lot as well. However because the 1990's which have a better build have a more extended top end that improves the sound stage and sparkle detail. Personally I think it would be good to own both headphones as one will sound good on certain recordings while the other will sound great.

With right mastered songs, these are beautifully sounding headphones, you can crack volume up how much you want and they still won't sound sibilant but you can clearly hear what are bad mastered songs on these. Enter the Monolith THX AAA 788....and there it was, all I remembered. At 250 ohm, the 1990 needs a good, high powered hp amp. I really doubt I would spend money for the likes of the HD800, Stax L700 or any other hp of that range, as long as my 1990/THX AAA combo is still working.

Great review - listening to it through my DT1990s! I sent a pair of HD650s back after trying these. I am fascinated by the ear pads you recommend. To be clear, you think they make the 1990s extend as far down as the 1770s? Thanks again, *great* review, subscribed immediately
@JoshuaValour
@JoshuaValour 6 лет назад
Ehh, Maybe not that far. Sub bass didn't seem to roll off hardly at all on the 1770. The 1990 with pads, serious rolloff happened about 30HZ. Which is still incredibly low. I don't know that aftermarket pads are "Better", as much as just very very different compared to stock. Hopefully that makes sense.

Tried very hard to like these, but the hot treble was just too fatiguing after a while. I listen to primarily classical orchestral and chamber music. Normally I love the sound of massed strings in the highest register, but they were for the most almost unbearable most of the time. And these were on very well mastered recordings. Not for me, sadly.

Just found your channel and I’ve seen a few of your reviews. Your content and video quality is amazing. What headphones do you recommend for a person that’s listening to metal/rock music on an old Sony cd player model D-FJ61. I like these 1990 pro’s but I’m unsure if the Sony CD player will be able to drive the headphones. Budget is $500-$600. Thanks!

I think anyone looking for a great headphone would do very well to start with the DT 1990 before throwing crazy silly money at an audiophile headphone that costs a lot more but doesn't really deliver a great deal more. And this is coming from someone who has owned/heard headphones costing as much as $4,000. I actually bought the DT 1990 Pro and the DT 1770 Pro for my recording studio. They both have their use cases but the DT 1990 Pro can pull double duty as a good mixing/mastering headphone and an audiophile headphone. I think the DT 1990 Pro will be the endgame headphone for a lot of people who hear them. The $529 price of admission is an insane, off the charts, value and spending more puts you well past the point of diminishing returns when compared to the Beyer. It is truly a remarkable headphone.
@verifiedfinn
@verifiedfinn Год назад
Just to note, they arent always for everyone. I tried em out and the wires on the back always touch your head which is annoying. Plus the bass sounded very muddy. I opted for the 900 pro x's instead and i still have to try out the hifiman XS but the 900 pro xs are the same headphone but just at a cheaper price. Sometimes it just isnt the right fit ya know

Hi, I was looking forward for this review and it's nicely done! I'll like some more opinions on the Dekoni Pads comparison with the Stock Pads. I'm looking for a reason to get the Dekoni Pads but I'm still unsure whats the trade off or maybe the difference that separates them between the stocks. (Mostly want to know the cons of it over another) Any opinion would help!
@JoshuaValour
@JoshuaValour 6 лет назад
Cons - There is a sacrifice in total detail and openness. (most likely due to it moving your ear further away from the driver). Flip side is that this causes slightly more sound stage, and the imaging is already so good, that it doesn't really seem to image any worse. Like I said in the video, it is basically a different headphones. So, what is a "Con" comes down to preference of sound. It makes them warm and "bassy" as hell. (compared to stock pads). Much stronger mid range impact. Highs are still very present, but not fatiguing any more. Also, more comfortable (For me).

I've had the DT1990 with analytical pads for almost a year now. I use a Aune X1S dac/amp (keep that in mind). The DT1990 is good but not great. Mids are recessed. Very fatiguing. There is definitely sibilance. "So Far Away" by Avenged Sevenfold kills me everytime without EQ. Bass impact is good at high volume, but I don't like listening to headphones super loud. Detail feels forced and a bit unnatural (not terrible). Drums and guitars are picked up very well with DT1990 but even T50RP with Shure 1540 pads sound better for drums. My IEMs (UE600) pick up much more detail at only $60; however, they lack everything but detail and mids. Maybe the balanced armatures do well with speed and detail retrieval because of how lightweight they are. DT1990 is still good for professional use. It does everything quite well for the most part. You won't be disappointed with them. Who else has heard the DT1990 on Aune X1S? I would like to hear your thoughts. Also, Sundara or HE500 and why?
@anemoia8010
@anemoia8010 5 лет назад
I had them for around a year as well now. Insted of the Aune X1S, I use the ifi iDSD Micro though. I like them quite a bit, while the treble is definitely very boosted, they don't get fatiguing for me. The midrange is also recessed, more than I would prefer, but it's still quite good. The bass is what I probably enjoy the most about them, nothing to complain about there. But the balanced pads are pretty bad. With them, they do get sibilant and the midrange is far too recessed. I'd say they are good headphones, but rely on treble too much for deatail and are not worth $600. I think the $400-$450 range is where they should be.
