A casual chat giving my first impressions of the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X. Cut out a lot more waffle this time as to not repeat too much from 700 Pro X video. This was recorded straight after the 700 Pro X video and I've used them a lot more since then. I really like these, out of the box tuning subjectively much better than DT 1990 Pro, much less bright, excellent detail. The biggest competition is the HD 560S which I really like, not sure atm which I prefer.

New subscriber here. Could you do a comparison between the 560s, 900x, and the 990’s? I have the 990pro and I am looking to upgrade. Keep up the good work

I am currently making the decison to upgrade to either these 900s or the 560s big price difference, are the 900s worth it? I make bass/electronic music i have dt770s theyre okay but yeah ive always found them quite fatiguing the brightness, i really just want something comfortable with a good profile thats not overly bright like i find my dt770s what do you think 900 pro x or the 560s?

So after a few months have passed which out of the hd560’s vs 900 pro x do you prefer and why? My main use would be for using with a guitar amp modeller, not so much for mixing and recording, but for general late night jamming whilst the kids are in bed.

as someone who owns the dt990 pro 250 ohms and recently picked up the 990 pro X and i personally think they sound excellent i tested them with gaming (escape from tarkov and ready or not specifically and they picked out the footsteps and audio q's flawlessly) i listened to some music and they did great i recorded a jazz solo on my trombone and listened back to it and it was great sounding i have 0 bad things to say about these love from sweden

It would be nice to have a higher impedance option (like for the DT 770/880/990). People who've already made the investment on a good amp or amp/DAC might not wish to invest money on such sensitive headphones. Additionally, the max. input power of these is 30 mW... that is nothing considering how much power a good headphone amp can inject; the DT 1990 Pro and the AKG K712 Pro are both less sensitive (offer more resistance) and have a max. input power = 200 mW. This means it is quite easy to damage the 700 or 900 "Pro" X with a headphone amplifier... correct me if I'm wrong.

As someone who owns the 990 pro, seems like they really tried to tackle the shortcomings of the 990 pros. I love the detached cable. I've always felt like the 990 pros could use some more bass (leather earpads help in that regard) and that the original ear pads were quite shallow.

Hi, been looking forward to hearing your impressions. Thank you and now looking forward to your more detailed review. I've had my 900's for about a week now and have spent a lot of time comparing to my 990's (250 and 600 ohm). In short, I find the 900's significantly less bright and less V shaped. The overall bass quantity is about the same, but the 900's don't seem to roll off as much and go deeper...also more definition. I find that the 990's increased treble and scooped mids helps poorer recordings sound good, but with tracks that are produced nicely the 900's do really shine. I do suggest you play around with positioning, though, as this does have quite an impact on tonality. Initially I found the mids a little too forward and hard at times. But then I moved the cups just slightly further back and as I did this the treble became more focused and the mids dropped a little. I personally wish Beyer hadn't reduced the highs quite so much, as many tracks have lost that crispness and sparkle that I enjoy, even if it might have been somewhat artificial. However, it seems that the aims with the 900 included addressing some of the biggest criticisms of the 990 (Beyer peak, too scooped, bass roll off) and therefore I'd wager it will be generally well received. It really does sound substantially different to the Beyer sound that I'm used to....the 990's and 770's sound much closer than the 990's and 900's do. Agree with you regarding the build quality - really nice. I do think the 990 and 770 pads are comfier though....more like cushions, however the 900 ones are still up there with the best.

Thanks for your insight here, pretty much echos how I'm feeling about these and the 700's. I feel like the 700's are a little blunted for want of a better word, compared to the 770. They have lost something in the translation by removing so much of the treble energy they've lost their edge. I think some will like them more than the 770, those that found the 770 too bright so thats why I'm thinking the 700 is more of a sidegrade. However for the 900, I can see this being a big hit compared to the 990 for a lot of people. Its more neutral than the 990 less bright than the 1990. The real question is whether its worth it over the likes of the Sennheiser HD560S which I think might be the best sub £200 pair on the market at the moment.

You made a really good analogy about the 700/900 Pros being a reboot of the original 770/990 Pros. I bought the 80 Ohm versions of the 770s about a few weeks ago and I really enjoy them quite a bit but I don’t want to step up to the 700s or even the 900s if they are vastly different. I might just keep the 770s for awhile but if the 700s give me the same sonic signature as the 770s but “better”, I might have to update them. Yeah I know, first world problems. 🙂

I don't think the 700's are replacing my 770s, so far I'm thinking the 900 is the more interesting of these two new headphones.

@@WheezyTech I think based on what I've read and heard in other reviews, and my wallet(!), I'm not doing to upgrade my 770 Pro 80 ohms. I'm going to keep them because I love the sound signature. Maybe in the future, I might add the 900 Pro X but for now, I'm quite content.

Okay, I've just received a pair of TYGR 300R's and taken a very quick initial listen. Immediate observations are that the TYGR sounds much closer to the 990 Pro than to the 900 pro X. Both TYGR and 990 Pro are very clearly V shaped, whereas the 900 Pro X is not (or if it is then it is much less) and they have a similar treble presentation, of a different character to that of the 900 Pro X. So, what I mean here is that, to me, both TYGR and 990 Pro seem to present a much more 'sparkly' treble character, whereas with the 900 Pro X the treble I notice most is more steely/metallic in nature, though is by no means excessive. I 'think' both the 990 Pro and TYGR emphasise the treble that is higher up in the frequency range (maybe 10k+...a bit of a guess), whereas the 900 Pro x has more most of its treble energy slightly below that. Turning to quantity instead of quality, the 990 Pro is way brighter than the TYGR. EDIT: Listened some more now and the difference is closer....I'd now say that the 990 Pro is slightly brighter. Early days, but I think me and the TYGR are going to get along well. Regarding TYGR vs 900 Pro X, I am finding it difficult to judge because I'm trying to compare a different range/style of treble (if that doesn't sound confusing!) and then the mids are also really different, too. I'm currently thinking the TYGR is brighter overall than the 900 Pro X, but the latter does have quite an incisive metallic crispness that cuts through every now and again.....just generally I hear something more mids focused. The treble presentation of the TYGR really pushes stuff like cymbals quite forward, so can sound a bit 'sizzly' though nowhere near as much as the 990 Pro. I've not really tried to actively dissect bass yet, though I think the 900 Pro X does this area excellently (compared to the other open back headphones I have heard), clearly having better extension and a definition than the 990 Pro and I would guess than the TYGR too. @Noel - looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on TYGR vs 900 Pro X, as I think you said you had both. Which is brighter might come down, to an extent, to what specific frequencies people are more sensitive to, if that actually is a thing! Guess, for me, the long and short of it is that the treble sounds different, but as to which has the most, I'm not sure.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 2 года назад
I picked up the 990 now so I've been doing a bit of listening on those now. I was really surprised at how bassy the TYGR 300R is compared to, well, pretty much any -open backed- headphone I've ever heard. Its really quite v-shaped. Seems to me the treble is on a similar level to the 990 but as it seems to have a significant bass shelf from about 400 hz down into the sub bass, I think that masks the treble somewhat. I don't know why other people haven't mentioned this, even DMS who doesn't usually like a bassy headphone seemed to like it. 990 kinda reminds me of the 250 ohm DT 770 in that it its got a lot of treble sparkle that at first is acceptable but gets fatiguing quickly. Although unlike the 770 its got a much less wonky midrange, I don't find them overly bassy either, seems just right to me, but its also probably masked somewhat by the treble. 900 Pro X is in terms of tuning is much better out of the box, Its got a really excellent bass extension. Its still got some excess treble energy, seems like Beyer is never going to get away from that. But compared to the 880, 1990, 990 I think its a subjectively better presentation on the whole. But I'm not sure its technically a particularly special headphone for £220. Not when the Sennheiser HD560S exists for around £50 or more less.

Love the video and comments! 🔥 How do the TYGR 300R compare to the DT 900 PRO X for gaming (e.g. hearing footsteps) and specifically for isochronic/binaural tones? From a technical standpoint, which of the two would be less likely to aggravate tinnitus for those who suffer from it on a daily basis?

The 770’s are the best bang for your Buck for sure. However I’ll put the 900’s above them they sound so good and have a more neutral tuning. They are the baby brother to the 1990’s. The 700’s however sounds really tinny to my ears and I’d recommend the 770 over those for sure.

Thanks for this review, you really speak in terms that make sense to me (unlike some other YT headphone reviewers). I am a big fan of beyerdynamic (currently owning DT1990 & 770 250Ω). I want to buy closed back over ears for mobile use (iPod paired with portable DAC/ amp), I don't think I would like the AKGs you recommend because I am not a fan of the Harmon curve, I like unequalised beyerdynamic tuning because it is effectively a built-in loudness contour (keeps the tinnitus at bay). My 250Ω 770s are too hard to drive and the coiled cable awkward in that situation. Do you have any advice on 32Ω 770 Vs 700 (or maybe 80Ω 770 with cable mod)? Have you heard 32Ω 770?
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 2 года назад
In theory, according to Beyerdynamic the 32, 80 and 250, even the 600 are all supposed to be tuned the same. However in my experience and I hear this from a few others, there was definitely a difference between the 250 and 80 ohm 770. Bass isn't much different, although in my units the 250 was more bassy. But the biggest difference seems to be in the treble peak which is both higher and more extended on the 250. Thats why I prefer the 80 ohm 770. I have heard that the 32 ohm tends to come across like the 250 ohm in terms of tuning. However the elephant in the room is that unit variance can be quite big on the 770 so this does play a part. I tend to recommend the 80 ohm and do a cable mod if the cable is too long.

To be honest, if I'm using EQ to achieve Harman target, does it really matter about the individual headphones as much? I have DT770 80 ohm, HD58x, Hifiman HE-X4 and they definitely sound different, but I can't tell if I'm doing them a disservice by EQing everything like that. I'd love to try these out, but I feel like I'd be wasting my money if the difference is extremely subtle.
@yabadabauk
@yabadabauk 2 года назад
I find that even if I try and match headphones using EQ, they still sound different to each other, to varying degrees. You may well already know this, so apologies in advance, but my thoughts are as follows.... The fundamental frequency may be the same, but the individual frequencies/harmonics that make that up will be different. I think that is what timbre describes. Yes, differences in sound between different headphones will reduce as you match each as close as possible to the same frequency target curve, but differences in driver, cups, pads. materials, dimensions; etc will all contribute to differing timbres. So, how subtle the difference in sound will depend on those variables and, thus, where headphone manufacturers stick to a design philosophy, you get a 'house sound', or little difference between models and where build varies substantially (usually between different manufacturers) you will still hear distinct differences, even after EQ matching. Same with musical instruments.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 2 года назад
What David said, I agree with this. Its complicated because audio is not a solved science and there's a lot that goes on between headphone and eardrum that influences sound. Its also near impossible to get the exact same measurement from even the same headphone on the same measurement rig more than once due to placement variances which affect how they measure. There's always one or two little spots where they vary. You can have two different headphones that measure mostly the same and due to tiny little deviations here and there add up to one sounding slightly different to the other, even within the same model due to unit variances. I used to try and EQ everything to Harman but they always end up sounding different. These days I tend to use each headphone for whatever they deliver out of the box and just enjoy them for what they are. Get to enjoy the various different flavours depending on my mood.

hi i looking for open back headphones for laptop with out amplifier , under usd 300. i use multi type music movie gaming The sound I like is mainly to be clear and have bass, but the bass should not be too heavy, because too heavy bass will cause the sound to be distorted, and it is not good if there is no bass. which one you recommend? senheiser, beyer , hifiman , philips, AKG ? and what model ? thanks

@WheezyTech 2 года назад
Based on those requirements. You say you want bass but not too much, clear sound, mixed media listening and doesn't require an amp. The DT900 Pro X would be a fine choice but I would personally pick the Sennheiser HD560S which fits your requirements perfectly in my opinion. It has great bass extension, a good amount of low bass but not too much. It has a fairly neutral presentation on the whole, its very comfortable and light weight for long listening sessions such as for gaming. And they are quite sensitive so they don't need lots of power to drive. Although this is all subjective so I do recommend trying stuff first before you buy, but the 560S would be my choice.
