That is a monster boost in the highs. Really, a very interesting decision from the designers. I totally agree that a long listening session would be taxing. 10/10 quality review.
Beyerdynamic can't give up with the insane top-end..it's a shame cause without that low-end I think this could've been a great dynamic. At its price point the Procaster is probably just a no-brainer..wonder how the M90 sounds.
I think it's not the high-end, look at this: 1:40. That boost around 4khz is so massive, almost +10db. That's the harsh-sounding part of this microphone. We can obviously hear the upper-midrange, overshadowing the high-end & low-end.
I actually really like the sound of this microphone, but everything you said makes a lot of sense. Always great to see such a detailed and honest review.
I got the V7 after seeing it so many times in the comparisons. It's such a great sounding dynamic at 100 bucks, nothing else seems to beat it in this price range. One downside tho, the V7 seems quite sensitive to EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) possibly due to the magnet they use in it. Using it near a computer has given me some headaches. I hope this is just my unit tho.
As a dynamic microphone, this microphone almost sounds like an AT 2020. Very thin sounding imo. I super appreciate that you were honest in the review :D
@@arash5550 Every microphone he reviews is reviewed on the Scarlett (Bandrew is big on consistency) and those microphones sound much better than this one imho.
RE320 with a bit of eq to chop off the high frequency sizzle is always the standout for me in these comparisons. It's like an SM57 on vitamins. This new Beyer certainly looks nice and sounds like it could work well with some eq. It has a cheerful and forgiving character in the mids making it very listenable. Another excellent video thank you, your methodology is truly gold standard.
The sE 7 was the nicest sounding with your voice. I have a lower voice so the m70 might sound ok with my natural tone. But for the price point, I’d spend it on the RE320. I felt the Podmic gave it a fair run and for 1/3rd of the price. I use an sm7b, podmic and a Presonus PD70 and like all 3. The Rode Procaster sits in a box.
If by chance God ever comes down from Heaven and says to you, "Go unto the earth my son and do good." We have a struggling podcast that would make endless use of the crappy old Procaster in a box. :D
It's weird, this mic sounds like it was post-processed to have that more modern, clinical top end at the detriment of the low-end. I also got a little bit of scratchiness without the pop filter as well.
I really appreciate your extremely thorough review and comparison on this microphone. I just got one of these but it has not yet arrived, and it has come down in price because it is now only $189 on Amazon. I am far from the expert that you appear to be, however I found that for the application I intend to use this for it sounds just right to me, and from what it sounds like you would not agree, because my use case is for recording an audiobook. I have a collection of microphones as well, but all of mine are more in the budget arena with my Rode Podmic and Maono PD400, and an AT2020 and I felt that these were all too 'broadcasty' (boomy) for my taste in this application. I prefer this for podcast/broadcast but feel it would be difficult to listen too for an audiobook of an 8-10 hour length. Obviously its all subjective, but I really appreciate your review because I do not have any high-end gear like yours to compare it too, and I found that I REALLY liked the M70 better than almost everything else you compared against except that one at the end that had such a WOPPER of a price tag on it that I choked on it.
Why don't they make dynamic mics with a flat frequency response anymore? Most of these dynamics are hyped and have a tendency to sound nasal. I wouldn't spend a dollar in this thing. Thanks for your honest review.
I like the beyerdynamic. Yeh the low end isn't there but thats allowing it to sound clear, and it doesn't sound too bright to me. I have a procaster now and I'm looking for a different sound, may check this out. I wanted thre earthworks ICON pro but it sounds too bright, and is a pricey for a youtube, podcast mic for me.
as always, a great video. this time, however, i don't completely agree with you. especially in broadcast use, it's a big win for me. lower male voices are carried much better by this microphone, since the low frequencies don't take over as much as with the usual suspects like SM7B or RE20. in my opinion, these and similar microphones are highly overrated. do they have their place? yes, for high female and male voices, for the masses they are not suitable.
Currently looking for an entry level XLR Microphone. It should be dynamic and preferably 150€ or less: Mics that I found interesting so far are: Shure MV7X, Rode Procaster, Beyerdynamics M 70 Pro X... any other recommendations?
I didn't hear any sibilance in your voice with this mic... And that's great! I can see why you didn't like it, your voice tends to be more in the mids than mid bass. I still like it. I like crisp mics. I think it would fit well for my tone of speaking.
Absolutely it can work for some folks, and that’s what’s great about audio, it’s so very subjective and there’s so many different sound sources that mics will work well on while not working well on others. If you try it out, I’d love to hear what you think about it and maybe hear some samples on line.
@@Podcastage It'll be a while, but I'll tag you when I do get to use it. Thank you for understanding the subjectivity. I've been roasted in other places for speaking positively about it.
I think if you have a really boomy low voice this could add some cut if you can't or don't want to eq it a lot for video calls or quick voice recording. I find that with my voice I have to cut bass and boost presence on my sm7b to not be excessively muddy
Hey mate. Great video, I don’t think it sounds good for it’s price at all. Sounds to mid rangey and slightly tinny. My favourite is the Electro Voice RE20 or the Sure SM7B.
Hi. I have been following your channel for a while. I love the way you do the reviews. Would like to know your your thoughts on the Sennheiser e965 microphone. If you could do a review on that, it would be helpful :) Thanks in Advance.
Very nicely explained the comparison.. But my preference is Shure's SM7b.. Sounds clear and heavy with base in voice.. being an Audiocratz I recommend SM7b especially for nice vocals..
Can someone help me, when I stream it goes well but when I start a game the bit rate goes down to 0 and the network becomes very slow and remains slow but when I restart the computer the network gets fast again. I have tested that if installing obs and even tried to stream with streamlabs obs but it is the same problem then. It says that it has to do with the network, but for my brother it is good to stream on his xbox. I have tried to restart the router but nothing has helped. Please help!
I think they market it for podcasting mic because streaming and podcasting is where all the microphone hype seems to be (at least in my world it is). The M70 pro x was almost my least favorite. Beyerdynamic m201 TG is the better beyerdynamic mic imo.
It's a great lookin' mic and well constructed from the looks of it. For spoken word, I agree---this is coming in as sharp and nasally in my ATH-M50s. I think I'd even choose a Samson Q2u over the sound signature. Just my opinion.
It sounds like an finished/EQ'ed vocal? It's a bit too expensive but I actually like it on your voice more than an SM7. The high end is smoother than the RE20 or the Earthworks on your voice. Could be a great mic for a podcaster who doesn't want to EQ their voice imo. If you want more bass, just speak a little closer :)
My preferences for recording spoken voices would be Neumann U87 and Earthworks Icon microphones because of their definition. For their universality: Shure SMB7 and Electrovoice RE20. Great for different reasons: Rode Podmic, Se Electronic sv7, AT2040, RE320, Heil, M160. In spite of an artificial sound (shouty), I find that this Beyerdynamic may be interesting for music radio (not sure). What is said always remains very intelligible whatever the speakers. Good tool for this case ? EQ and processed sound can do things like this. On the other hand, the external pop filter disturbs the reading on screen, it is a pity. It seems to have a "good" of axis sound. I usually like their mics for their "softness" as opposed to this one. I try to understand this choice. Very special mic. The Beyerdynamic M90 pro x seems more generalist, a comparison would be interesting. Sorry for bad english.
Can you please be a hero and do a side by side comparison for the Sony c100 and the warm wa 800?? They lay almost in the same price range and I would like to get a comparison to know which one to purchase... thanks for your awesome channel
Agree with your assessment on the M70 Pro X. The off axis rejection is phenomenal, buuuut, that high end is just boosted too much. Sure, you can EQ it, but I'd rather start with a clean signal that needs less overcompensation. On the electric though, yeah, it sounds crunchy, but clean, both lead and rhythm sounding great. I'd go with the NT1 over this (but I already have one, so I'm biased) OR the SM7B Used if you're in an untreated room, at $300 though.
We should understand what's the purpose of this microphone. Broadcasting. I found it to be the best of all tested microphones... on that role. Our voices are “naturally” unbalanced, so it's difficult to qualify a microphone by listening to one voice. Obviously, it's not the best microphone for your voice, but it might be the best one for voices a bit lower than yours. I usually listen to lots of podcasters, equalising most of the tested microphones. They enhance low and high frequencies a bit to get more intelligibility. That is the strong point of this microphone. You won't need to do this. Even so, most of the microphones will never sound as transparent and intelligible as this one. I'm Spanish, so transparency and clarity are qualities that allow you to understand better whatever people say in English. When you used Beyerdynamic, I understood everything you was saying. It was a bit more confusing for the rest of them. The SM7 has more body, warmer, and it would be pretty similar to the Beyerdynamic if we would move all frequencies toward the bass a bit. My conclusion is that I never heard a more transparent microphone like this one. I wouldn't say I like it either to sing or play instruments; too analytical. It's a microphone designed for broadcasting, and it is much better than the others on this task. Modern, ultra-transparent sound, never affected by the proximity of the mouth, is designed to avoid the usual problems you find when speaking. As always, some equalisation is necessary for each voice. I would buy it if I wouldn't already have an Aston Spirit. Well, I know, I don't have any idea about microphones, and I am deaf... It is my opinion. Thanks.
So given the choice between this an a second hand neuman kms 105 what would you choose? I ask because in your next podcasting roundup please include the approximate price of 2nd hand high end kit. And yes I can get a neumann KMS105 for about £\€\$300. I also rely on your ears because I am nerve deaf in my right ear & my frequency range in my good ear is about 250Hz to 10,000Hz but minus about 40db! SO I have to trust you guys as to what sounds good for the average person??
Anyone postprocced (EQ and Comp) the AT2020 and can help me with any advice? Im not 100% happy with my config right now. For example, looking the stock product, what worked for u? Btw, great video. Amazing sound quality. Im with u about the highs. But not THAT bad honestly (except for the price).
Hi. You should make a "Versus" Between the sE Electronics V7 and the Shure SM58... I didn't find it in the channel, maybe i don't know how to search. ¡Viva México!
The look is cool, the sound is not so much, maybe suitable for people who needs open and sweet tones. I might interest if the price tag is around 80 and my ksm9 is damaged or stolen.
Straight up couldn't listen to the review because of what this mic does to your voice. After having just watched your NT1 vs NT1a comparison, this is like nails on a chalkboard. Thanks for the review none the less, your videos are awesome.
Looks amazing. Doesn’t seem to be a great fit with your voice; playback on Bose headphones and yeah it does come across a bit too harsh. The re320 seemed to be one of the bitter fit in this form factor with your voice. The headphones with detachable cables might be the best in their new offering. Was kind of thinking about this one and the re320 but then I started considering why I would harvest even more mics a bit silly comment on mic hoarder’s video, but eh, you actually have a use for them, I just mic once a month and got some 10 mics to choose from ;-)
I think the Shure SMB7 is better if it comes to broadcast microphones, but personally, I would not be got for both of these and go for the Rode broadcaster or Neumann microphone. For me these are more the high-end standard if it comes to Vocal mics for broadcasting OR voiceover work for Radio jingles for imaging.
Plus I wanted to add that nowadays the Beyerdynamic M70 Pro combined package includes a headphone that has the rode broadcaster for the same price, so I would consider going for that and then buying a loose headphone later if you have not got the money to buy both at the same time.
@@Podcastage I understand what your saying but the RE20 still sounds muffled to me in this video. In your Shure MV7x Review you used the RE20 for comparison and it sounded better then. Also that's with me just comparing the RE20 to it's self.
