So Beyoncé had been hitting the “Cultural Reset” button since 2016 and people still think that she’s fake and a clout chaser. People hate black women🤣😬.

robin volpi cd RIGHT Noname irritated me. She’s trying to find a reason to hate but in reality the whole visual was about black people deserving to exist and deserving success. Yet she found a way to make it about capitalism. EVERYBODY looked expensive in the movie not just Beyonce.🤭

When you realize that the “OTHERSIDE” sequence in #blackisking was about her miscarriage. That’s her connection to the meaning of circle of life. With death there will be new life. She had 2 miscarriages and now she has 3 beautiful children. “I’ll meet you on the otherside” pretty much heaven (Heaven couldn’t wait for you) 😢. I can just cry talking about this. This project have so many layers and I bet there is more. This sequence made me cry so hard. And I noticed she cried a lot during this sequence as well. Stay strong Beyoncé you are powerful!

When will my fellow Africans realize that Beyoncé didn’t make this album with only Africans in mind?? This was a GIFT to all the black people in America and throughout the diaspora! It was to educate and show them a glimpse of the beauty that exists in Africa from east to west and north to south. She teamed up with fellow African creators/musicians so Africans could also have a voice in the storytelling of our continent. This beautiful masterpiece was to celebrate all parts of what we are and encourage black people that live outside Africa to come back or visit, and love where their ancestors came from. The continent is as much theirs as it is ours. This is the finest example of what cultural appreciation ,not appropriation, looks like. Thank you so much Bey for this Gift!

Black is King is definitely THE PROJECT. Is the biggest music project I've ever seen and it's super well thought. If you go deeper in the story you will realize how big The Gift album is. Apparently this is how Beyoncé finished the love letter to Africa. This is an important and powerful message of self love, how important is our history and embrace it, never forget our culture, our roots, our ancestors. And also never lose your way. Seeing this makes me feel loved and empowered and proud even I'm not Black but I'm Brown and I received the message. As a recommendation for you, watch it again and go deeper into the story you will find it even better. Beyoncé is King

We were brought here our native names and language were taken...so let's say for arguments sake that she took the time to figure that out and pay her respects what's wrong with that? As far as I can tell she worked artist from Africa to have a very authentic perspective can we be proud too?

As a literal African-American, I m not offended by Black is King. Usually we are portrayed as flyinfested, aids ridden people which WE ARE NOT. Or the Chaka Zulu narrative. Africa is a rich continent, rich with culture, rich with love, rich with education, rich in language, and rich in tradition. This movie is for the diaspora. If you’re triggered by it, you mon Cherie, you’re a colonizer. I’m here for it, I smiled, cried and felt every gamete of emotion. My favorite song was power, I cried during brown skin girl, because when I bathe my brown skin daughter I know the power of affirmation.

I've been thinking about the teal man that was often seen with Beyonce while the young man was on his journey a lot. If we go with the theory that one of Beyonce's role was his sprit guide/ angel, then I think it makes sense to assume that the teal man was the young man "chi" or spiritual self in physical form. The teal man showed up on the beach when Beyonce found him and was with him his entire journey. When the young man was lost in the world, the chi was passive, kinda just sitting down or just looking at what was happening. To me that symbolized that the young man/boy was not connected to himself (hence why is Chi was also just on autopilot or in the sunken place). The teal man came alive during already because the main character was coming back to himself and being reconnected. As a Dominican woman, yes I can admit there is ignorance behind our roots. Our people refuse to see that we are a beautiful mixture of European, African and Taino culture. It frustrates me to see us push away our African roots due to a stigma society as embedded. These identity issues are something most people of color face because of what we've been taught. Once we unlearn the lessons they've taught us and answer to the islands call, only then do we find peace. Which is the lesson Spirit, our ancestors and Mrs. Carter are teaching. Now is not the time to point fingers, for that is the reason why we are in this situation we are in now. Many blessings.

People stating the “culture vulture” nonsense, are missing the point. This is for Lion king, she reimagined the freaking lion king through this visual. Lady in pink short hair was Nala, little kid and guy who married nala were simba, bald evil guy was Scar. It’s literally the lion king reimagined by Beyoncé so naturally she will use African artists and culture to tell it. Add Caption Here umm I’m South African too, so not sure what point you were making with that. I think the concept “culture vulture” has been over used and not quite understood. A Culture vulture is someone who has no links to a certain culture and by their own volition chooses to claim said culture as their own, without due credit to those of which it claims its origin. Beyoncé has featured black African writers in her music,Mozambique/South African pantsula dancers in her videos, African designers in her concept pieces and at no point has she ever claimed it to be her own. No other African American artist has cared enough to include Africa in the creative global space like she has! All that aside this film was for the lion king soundtrack. Where she showcased our actors, singers and rightfully so. Imagine if she did this soundtrack with no African artists and then did this film with all her American friends. Then and only then would your culture vulture claims be validated.

The message there was "To God we belong and to God we return" The lady who played Rafiki recently passed away was a veteran in the industry and that was her final project. Those words were perfect.

Although it’s true that she is repping african designers, I am SURE that (at least) some of the looks in Already were custom made Burberry. Also, the outfits that she used on the OTR II set at Global Citizen were done by Versace (the monochromatic suits) and Balmain (the feathered black and white fit).

I actually love how this is starting an interesting debate about whether black people can culturally appropriate OTHER black people? It’s super meta, and a genuinely intriguing debate. I’m here for it. 🤓 🍿

As a South African, where many of the creatives who worked behind and in front of the screen are from. I honestly couldn't wrap my head around people saying this AFRICAN American women was exploiting us. ESPECIALLY seeing as she was not only showing African cultures and traditions in a way that made it so clear it was from a place of love, respect and after having done much research. But also because majority of the team who worked on this WAS African. All of them properly credited. Sis even took a backseat in many scenes to let the African actors have their moment. And EVERY person who worked on this project spoke of nothing but it being an amazing and uplifting project. At this point people have just got to speak their truth and say you hate Beyonce. It has nothing to do with her work or talent, she just ain't it for you. And then we can keep it moving but the LIES have got to stop. And if you wanna say I have a right to criticise, hell yeah you do but don't spice it with untruths like saying SHE ISN'T TALENTED???!! Blasphemy. There are white men doing a quarter of her work getting double the praise and THAT'S the truth! But anyway peace and love to you all ❤️💕💕

From one Nikki to another - that accusation is just peoples ignorance and jealousy. How she stealing from her own culture? Better question from those commenters: who are Black people supposed to be or come from if we can’t be American and we can’t claim our African heritage???

If not for Covid, this Visual Album should’ve been in the theaters. Black is King is AMAZING. The story-telling, the style, the culture, THE ERRRTHANG 😩. P.S. I was in tears during Keys to the Kingdom & Otherside, and turned up by My Power.

I am from Lesotho, and as an African I'm really, really impressed with how well Beyonce uses her influence, she's worn her heart on her sleeve, and come at a time like this, when black people are crying for collective healing, to say "I am for you, BLACK PEOPLE, wherever you you are". That's brave of her, because she knows some will still criticize her work, but this ordinary African woman felt it, and wants to say "Thank you Beyonce" 🙏🙏.

I read some unbiased reviews that called black is king “imperfect” but in a good way. I will criticise anybody calling it perfect though because some critiques lévelled against black is king have merit, and it is in some cases it’s subjective, but ART is by definition subjective. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, two people can look at a painting and have vastly different interpretation. That’s the joy of art. It’s a valid critique that some people find the lack of specificity jarring, you would, almost need to watch with a textbook to understand all the references, it’s so reference dense but the references are sureface level and aren’t explained, where are these references from? which countries? which tribes? It’s never explained, are we in Ghana? Are we in Johannesburg? Are we in Timbuktu? We don’t know...it’s all just grouped together and called “African”. That lack of specificity doesn’t work for some people and that’s okay, Africa is continent of 54 nation each with its own distinct unique culture and heritage, they can’t all thrown together in amalgamation and called African, that’s oversimplifying - which is something African-Americans often do - also not all Africans subscribe to a single pan-African identity.

Agreed. Many people are saying it represents Africa from West, South, North to East... And virtually no East African cultures are in the film. Most wouldn't know because it is aesthetic. But I'd counter that, it's OK? Aesthetic is part of culture, so long as it's employed in the correct way. That leads into another problem, treating the African creatives who worked on the project as spokespersons for every culture in the movie. This is the amalgamation that bothers me. We saw Disney consult for Moana, and there were still issues because it wasn't *enough* . Just because there are efforts against appropriating, doesn't mean it can't still happen. The contention about the capitalistic venture falls flat because Beyonce has never claimed to be a anticapitalist and it's far from profitable when compared to her other projects. I'd say what bothers me the most is the connection to Lion King. Disney has yet to produce an animated movie where Black people are not represented by *animals* . We could've had Black is King instead of the reboot, choices were really made.. I think that criticism shouldn't be automatically lambasted as 'hating'. I enjoyed it and watched it with my entire family who did too! But Beyonce, and her contemporaries, have not gotten to where they are through complacency and other's insight.
