There is something 'broken' in the system when people cannot afford to warm the air in their homes in winter. How much extra strain does this place on the economy should they fall sick, have to take time off and end up queuing in Dr Surgery. Call to government for greater regulation in the sector to ensure energy affordability and economy.

Tried this in the past but this is the 1st time I've actually had some real success. As things came up I put them on a needs, wants, and need-but not right now, list. That 3rd category helped. I did spend $24 on food outside of the home this month, but it was a big improvement for me. I put an additional $438 into savings!

Like dieting, no spend can really feel miserable. I need to do both. My mindset on no spend is to really enjoy all the things I already have, books, DVDs, art supplies, comfy warm bed, pizza dough in the bread maker, seeing snowdrops come up in the garden, my animals, beauty supplies, good clothes, I feel rich when I think of it all. Takes away that wanting feeling. We’re using up pantry stocks and some dinners are a bit weird but good. On dieting, trying fasting 16:8, so simple and feels sustainable and accidental donuts can be accommodated 😂. Having slipped over twice in the last week, I actually feel like an accidental donut. You have to laugh 😂. Thanks for the smiles and inspiration x x

This was my 4th year doing no spend and I blew it at the beginning of the year. Ok here is my take on this: my silly excuse 1. I have never had a happy meal from McDonald’s so FOMO (fear of missing out) set in when I heard they now had an adult one with a bigger prize. So for $13 dollars plus tax, I got a chicken burger, fries, a drink and a toy chicken nugget. I let my son in law have the supersize soda because I don’t drink that. He drank only 1/4 of it. The fries were cold and very salty. I liked the chicken burger that usually costs $3.99. Here is the real kicker: tonight I had a chicken burger and fried rice that cost me less than $1 to make at home. Lesson learned and I continued successfully and saving loads.

Yes, I too am cold in house. Everything is expencive, Had to get ridd of car too as fixes were about £500 ....£ 600 each time. Just puting on jumpers and thick socks etc. plus a God send, my two hotwatere bottles that I have on my lap and if need be the other one I put against my chest to keep me snug under soft blanky, I make a cuppa etc. then when warmed up and feeling less blue, I will get on with tidying and prepare everything for the evening with kettle of hot water for to flannel body wash with by my little fire I make only once for a few hours before bedtime with two hotwater bottles ready in my bed ....snug as a bug in a rug. : ) not saying it's what I want but it is what I need for these expensive times. Hugs n Love Viv and who ever reads this. Yes it is Brrrr.

Hello dear lady, small tip for your freezer... pull out the plug and simply leave the door closed. The contents will then remain normally frozen for 5 hours. The motor then receives a kind of reset. Then briefly open the door, open all the drawers and close them again and close the door again. Nine times out of ten this helps. I think the engine just needs to rest for a while.

Today while at the grocery store I told my husband I wanted a pizza because I've been craving one. He looked startled and asked if I was going to buy one to take home. I just laughed and said I'm craving it, not buying it. I'll make one at home. I'm finally getting good at resisting the temptation of buying processed food. Making it at home always tastes better anyway. Great video Vivi.

Hey Vivi. I’m on third year of no spend. It’s a constant reality now. Last August and December were “cheated” on. But, I have zero debt! and am managing to stay debt free. This is a significant accomplishment for me. I’ve been much more vigilant about tracking my spending. I do this daily now and I make a monthly summary and examine each amount and honestly assess the necessity of those purchases. I’ve had to have some dental work (cheapest option) but I’ve saved for that. I must say it’s such a relief to be debt free and managing. Cheers.💜🐇

I made a list of pantry items that I want to use up - old canned products, a few freezer things like green beans and chillies from the garden two seasons ago, some noodles I had forgotten about, chutney and marmalade from years ago! In January I managed to use up ten items from that list, so happy I used them rather than throw out. Love your chats Vivi, so sensible and positive. Love from Albury, New South Wales, Australia.

Great points Vivi 💕 you speak such sense 😊 Blooming freezer though! January has been tough for us, emotionally. We have been relying on doughy 🍞 🍩 things and takeaways to pick us up. I know it’s not the answer but I think the important thing is we recognise what and why we are doing it. Financially (bittersweetly) we are doing better though as what we lost 💔 cost us much more monthly than what we are spending on frivolously. In February we aim to try and work on this. I like the idea of putting it towards my garden 🥕🥬 🌺 and bird food ❤️🐦. I think anyone starting of low/ no spend will get so much from this video, packing a lunch/ taking water is something I’ve always done and would instantly make an impact to someone who doesn’t already. Lots of love, Charlotte 😘

Hi Vivi. I too have had some unexpected necessary spends this month. What I do when I have had to pay out for something or if I slipped up by giving in to temptation, is add another week onto the end of my challenge. My slip ups tend to be with my daughters and my grandchildren. I struggle not to treat them as their parents are all struggling and treats are non existent for them. I love your pep talks, they help me to stop beating myself up. x

What has really helped me is making a grocery list before shopping, making meals that make me 2-3 meals or into other meals. I only have $72.50 a week grocery budget and I eat majority organic foods. So, if I make chili, what is left over I make chili spaghetti or sloppy joes. If I have any $$ left over I stock up. This year is a no buy year, unless it is a need. Springtime I hit the garden =)

Hi Vivi. I have actually had a great no spend January. Only what was in budget. I even presented my husband with the challenge of a no spend /low spend month. I told him he didn't have to do no spend but tru to do low spend and letseat from our freezer and pantry. He has been really great as he cooks on the weekends while I do Mon-Thurs. I alwats pack a lunch for work and I have my water bottle with always. Thanks for all the encouragement you give. I have rather enjoyed this challenge. I do have to spend a little next month but I have been putting money away for the garden improvements that I will be doing to get readyfor spring so it won’t hurt to spend ad it has been allotted already. Was blazing away at my no spend month until... the solar generator i was saving for was reduced by £700! Speculate to accumulate- that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it😊😉 (Its great and will save me some cash too, as i will use it regularly over the summer, as well as prepared for any power cuts etc). Apart from my granddaughters birthday next month I shall carry on with no spend throughout February. Wont need any grocery shopping at all next month, so theres a saving straight away, as a batch cooker the menu is planned already for next month without needing to buy any more groceries. We never by food/drink outside the home, more than happy to take a hot drink out in a thermal travel cup! Also we restrict our eating to within a short time frame, so dont need to eat food at certain times. I have lost 4st in a year by doing this, and eating a far healthier diet. Feeling far better for it too, sharper and more energy. Love your channel, very uplifting and like chatting to an old friend.

Great video Vivi, I too started a no spend January. Roof damage during a storm was number one , heating controls was the number two, Car Tyre was number 3. All large bills but luckily all things that I have sinking funds for so this didn’t scupper my budget. Only one small trip to the supermarket for fresh fruit and veg. I did allow myself some of my non discretionary spending money but I have spent less than 25% of my normal allowance. Thank you for this, I find the monthly check in super helpful. A great month here thanks to your videos. Few things I’ve decided. I like wine, that’s not a decision 😂 but I have a “ration” for the year which are the ones I have in the cupboard. I mentioned to people I was doing this and they kindly got me some for Christmas. I’ll also make home brew but no spends on wine for me for the whole year, just drinking what I have (and none before Good Friday). Secondly I am not buying any books all year, first month is a tick. I also started my emergency savings fund this pay day and I am so pleased to be up and running there. Finally (lots more but I won’t go on), rather than inflict my decisions too much on my family, I compromised and said they can have “Treats of the week” instead of treats for a tenner 😂 meaning they pick 3 things for circa £5 total l, which I won’t question. Eat your veg, drink your water but they then have x, y and z too. Happy with that so we don’t fall out. None for me. Take care, Tracy ❤

I have had a bad flu which is still lurking and have been very shivery at times (and like you, being a widow of a certain age 🫣 can’t afford to put the heating on very much) so bought a pack of 5 wool blend socks for under my boots and 2 second hand Joules wool scarves 🧣 all cheap for gardening 👩‍🌾 at our community park garden and 1 for church under my cream coat. These have been a life saver during the recent bitter cold winds and snow. Hi Vivi, I do hope it warms up soon for you. I really understand what you mean about heating prices through the roof. My bill last week was gulp worthy and it's always been on the expensive side anyway. I try as much as possible to keep the thermostat down but sometimes it's impossible due to the drafts and I get cold so easily. I do try other ways as well to reduce the electric bill. I shudder to think what the bill would be if I didn't try to conserve electricity consumption. I didn't challenge myself to a no spend January though I could have I knew there were things I was going to have to buy. I did prolong purchases as long as possible and the food budget spending was way down due to wanting to use up things I have and because the cost of food is just ridiculous. Afternoon , Vivi - you look and sound like me- I’m wearing 4 layers of tops ,topped with a hoodie, as I watch ! My house is pretty chilly but heating is expensive- so it’s off. Yes..I’m trying to squirrel away a bit of money to maintain groceries..my rent is going up in July $ 200 + more a month! I’m figuring things out . Cost of living is crazy high here as well . I try to only buy what I need - which Is sort of new to me as I’m really seeing the need to tighten my belt ! So far so good Bc for some of us , when your back is against the wall -you act!! As you say , it’s a bit tough to not give in to frivolous spending. Ha ha ! You nailed it! I do get notions to peruse Etsy now and again and sometimes ( not often , really) treat myself🫣-but no more of that for a bit. I like the idea of making notation of what I buy! Hi Vivi! I'm glad to see you bundled up and hopefully keeping warmer. Winter is such a challenge. I cut my "eating out budget" for January from $432 per month to $88 due to not yet having a car to replace the one I wrecked in December. This does not count groceries that were about $25 per week. I'm actually cooking and baking. The Starbucks near me has been under renovation for over 5 months, so that habit has been pretty much broken! I'm now making coffee with Cafe Bustelo sticks at 20 cents each. 😊 My property taxes increased 263% and are due February 5. Luckily, there's money left from my auto wreck to pay the extra $2500 for this year and to purchase at least a used car. I thank you for taking on this challenge. It makes us all mindful. 🎉

This experiment, Vivi, was VERY enlightening. Discovered that I can’t be trusted with Apple Pay. I need “slow pay” to curb 2am impulses. Damage was reversible, thank goodness. Scratch cooking from the pantry was a big win! A few Vivi recipes got me through in tasty style. Savings? 👍✅ Off topic, just this morning stumbled on “The Lighthouse Stevensons” BBC documentary. What a story, that Bell Rock LH and the treacherous Scottish shoreline. Never thought that remote populations depended on shipwreck pillaging for survival. The spectacular scenery and the Lighthouse Museum are now bucket list “wants”. Will need many more spend free months (years) to make that happen. MOTIVATION!

Hey Vivi, thanks for the great video! I really appreciate your point about sustainability. It's just not good for the planet or our health to constantly overspend on fast food or random things we buy online. If you're a small family l, it's much better to do our shopping at local markets. They may be a bit pricier, but at least we won't be tempted to buy junk food or unnecessary items like alcohol, soft drinks, or chips. It's a small sacrifice for a healthier and more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

Did some research. There are many articles like that (also from manufacturers) - - -/Refrigeration systems rely on the boiling of refrigerant under pressure and heat. When the ambient temperature is below 60ºF, it takes more energy to make the refrigerant boil and change into a vapor. And the energy consumption increases with the decreasing temperature until at 32ºF, there's no cooling capacity at all./

So tighten belt time to repay Emergency fund ( obviously i paid for car repair from my emergency fund - i have a separate Car fund which is building towards MOT time. I menu plan and meal prep weekly. I can't be bothered to cook after work. For the no processed food, I do like to have pizza and it is quite expensive. 1 pizza plus tip and delivery can put me at $25 (£20). I decided to add pizza into the grocery list every other month or so. It saves me so much money and time. My next goal is to make pizza from scratch but have most of the ingredients on hand so I don't feel tempted to order a pizza. I carry a water bottle with me but I also have an extra 1 in the car for the times that I do forget. It has come in handy.

Your freezer may be struggling because the ambient temperature is too low.. (oddly enough) I had similar problem with a chest freezer that I put in an outside garage space, years ago... guy said it wasn't the freezer, the environment was too cold, apparently it was putting a strain on the motor.. See how it is when the heating is on ... The biggest enemy to overspending ,in my opinion, is tippy tappy cards... I need some passport photos... two machines ,they both wanted tappy cards I don't ( won't ) have one . All the local authority toilets in Liverpool are now tappy cards, and the price went up from a 20p wee to a 30p wee..you can't even use the loo !! When you use them you don't get a receipt ! I see young people getting into all kids of trouble , as you say a coffee and a cake here, a nail polish there it all adds up and is all unaccounted for.
