We had the honor of having our dear friend Jonathan Pageau host this Beyond Order lecture in Montreal on May 23rd, 2022. Jonathan opens the show by describing how he first heard (and subsequently met) Jordan. This event, then, serves as a continuation of the conversations they first had. Throughout this hour-and-a-half-long event, Dr. Peterson and Jonathan Pageau discuss perception, symbolism, values, and the relationship between perception and the cognitive scientist’s attempts to understand consciousness.

If the Constitution, our Supreme Law, is the standard for what they are allowed to do and nothing more unless the states approve an amendment, why is it that we have the problems we do? Is it not the natural tendency of government to grow that is to blame? Since history and logic tell us that is true, is it not WE the PEOPLE (every generation since it's founding) that or to blame having allowed it to happen? Of course we have been and still are being infiltrated, in various forms, by "foreign ideologies" - people and groups that DON'T AGREE with, nor honor or respect, the words and spirit of our founders. Some do so on purpose! Others by ignorance. Naivety's mother is ignorance. Think about it. Question: How can any population or society that does not dedicate itself to the preservation of freedom and the honoring of every individual's inalienable rights exist for long? If the essence of freedom is the limitation on the power and reach of government and our government today seems to no longer have such limits, is it not logical therefore to conclude that freedom will gradually go by the boards? Isn't an informed populace the best condition to have if we ever hope to put tyranny back in its bottle? Aren't the things that we are experiencing today born of the subversive idea that we are a democracy? If ignorant and free can never be, then how should you and I expect the land of the free and the home of the brave to exist in a sea of ignorance? If ignorance is at the core of what is responsible for our decline, does it not seem appropriate then that devotion oneself to pursue the required knowledge to remain free is of utmost importance?

@@davidcole1475 He seems to have a very deep understanding from all I've heard. He takes it really deep. I remember coming home from college one summer and talking to my dad, an evangelical pastor, telling him that these things going on in humans was all just chemical and biological and that there was no God, no Devil, etc. I thought I had a real gotcha point. He said something like "well yeah, that's how our bodies work as designed. We're embodied in physical, material world." Observing what's going on physiologically while also examining the stories themselves and their meaning, showing how Christianity can be "true" even the "the truest thing" is not a lack of understanding of covenant. He talks about Israel meaning to struggle with God and talks about attention and aim. These things are related to covenant and I imagine that if you were to bring up your understanding of covenant he could go there with you.
@bratSebastian
@bratSebastian Год назад
@@davidcole1475 Well, there is God or there isn't. It's as simple as that. Another thing: we can prove none of those options. But scriptures have been written down by some people in different times having their reason to make them as it wasn't cheap and required educated people to participate. Some people organization that lasts until now, The Church, created the canon we can today call The Bible that is just a set of some stories, often written down very late after happened or there may be some myths or legends that have been created in some purposes and that is real. The real thing is that what we know today as Decalogue some description of laws without actual ten words they supposed to be. And we know the story of Adam and Eve that has been written down probably on the way through the desert people of Israel had led by Moses to The Promised Land, as we have to imagine what problems might have arose on the way of so many people used to live as slaves in pagan kingdom. That doesn't mean those stories are fully made up. Who knows, they might have been preserved some way for thousands of years until that moment on the desert without a slightest of changes, but highly unlikely. Therefore may exist as many interpretations that may be seen valid (not proven invalid) without contradiction to others, that's ok. That's what St. Augustine have said about that. Jordan Peterson is sincere. He can't prove neither literate accuracy of scriptures having real historical values nor the existence of the God revealed in those scriptures. He has no ambition to claim he can living 2k years after the last sentences we can read from The Bible made by people of The Church. He's a philosopher and psychologist scholar that can draw a great even religious value from The Bible, but as a consequence of Scholastics made by St. Thomas Aquinas, understanding a world of creation and understanding The Creator are completely separate areas that should not be messed with each other.
@bratSebastian
@bratSebastian Год назад
@@davidcole1475 You have clearly a problem with logical thinking. Every statement is either true or false. You say it is highly probable God exist because whatever you observe makes sense as long as it has been created by intelligence. I agree as for me this also makes sense, although till Jesus Christ and His Church there was only one known person who got that without revelation and has been sentenced to death because of it making him first christian martyr more than 3 centuries before Christ. So there is a great proof that one's observation doesn't implify the correct interpretation. Although we can assume something exists in one and only way, even nowadays quantum physics can say that only when observed and therefore interpreted, but until the observation it may be in many ways. That proofs only one thing: that every reasonable conscience can absorb only determined information. The rest about The Church you wrote just say you're a protestant. You claim there is only one valid interpretation although the whole protestant thing is about rejecting the authority to interpret, therefore multiplying interpretations. It just proofs you truly have a problem with logical thinking. No protestant would get his hands on a book called The Bible in either XVIth or XXIst century if The Church wouldn't claimed the canon of holy scriptures back in IVth century. The Church has been established by the Apostles that we chose to believe their teaching come directly from God. I didn't write of various interpretations contradictory to each other. I mentioned (after St. Augustine) about geting different observation and therefore different meaning, but it is what you will get if for example you'd listen to several separate men descriptions of a single woman. Some will say about her hips, others legs and others about her eyes or hairs. All of them would be true (although quite subjective) and not contradicting with other intepretations. What can be different and contradicting are judgmental issues. That's why The Church needs to have an authority to correct Her sheeps. I wrote about myths and legends in reference to what we call (ones again - the canon) 'The Old Testament' or what Jews call 'Tora'. There were 3 or 4 traditions known in Israel of those stories that have been put into book of Genesis (Tora overall, but b. of Genesis had more major differences). Those stories has been kept for God knows how long in some environments we can now distinguish as different traditional sources. I didn't say that about the 'New Testament', although there are differences in the Gospel written by different authors in different time after a long time The Church has been teaching about Jesus and His Kingdom. The targeted audience was also different. No wonder there were differences in the scriptures. Anyway, people may have a resonable doubts about them being correct description of what have happened in times of Jesus.

This ongoing conversation had by Dr. JBP, Pageau, Vervaeke, Bishop Barron is one that can be seen as the present moment on the 700+ years debate of realism v nominalism. In an age where nominalism appears to be at its pinnacle as the un-examined dominate underpinning of all modern philosophy, I am heartened that Dr. JPB and the cog sci types are imploding that worldview to pieces. I've personally found that a deep respect for sacred transcendence re-enchants the world in a more sane balance of subjective instances and the objective universals while simultaneously dis-enchanting the poisonous spell we live under of relativism and materialism. He thinks and expresses the truth out loud and has no fear engaging in meaningful dialogue. He so graciously shares his knowledge and lovingkindness to others. I absolutely respect, love and admire him. ✝️❤️ Interpretation of our perception is based on our personal/individual experience. Since everyone and everything is intertwined, the universe harmoniously sends us signs/signals/symbolic daily maps to guide us into what truly matters. But it’s up to the individual to make a conscious choice based on free will. Even though many times we make painful life regretting mistakes, that’s the beauty of growth/change. It’s how truth sets us free and molds us into the most beautiful versions of ourselves. At the end of the day, we all seek redemption along w/courage to seek and conquer new adventures. That’s the ecstasy of life. We’re not just mindless beings floating around the ether. ✝️❤️

I myself am an atheist and very much love Harris' and Dawkins' work. I've been completely immersed in Dr. Peterson's work since the events of bill c16 and have never looked back. Although I can't simply believe in the traditional god, as it does come into conflict with my rational beliefs, I've very much turned around on my position that the fundamental concept of god and the meaning found in religion can be replaced. This was a brilliant lecture on that very topic and was much appreciated. Thank you Dr. Peterson and Jonathan Pageau for all your work.
@jupiterrising887

You're almost there, then. Belief in God is not about surrendering your belief in reason. Instead there are spiritual forces in this world that work very hard to keep things out of your mind, (Dr. Peterson has much to say they would rather you not hear) especially anything that encourages you to think about realities you cannot see or touch. Materialism, measurement and empirical method are quite often championed as the ultimate author of truth, but the diehard materialist runs into a very serious problem when it comes to certain universal human experiences such as envy, greed, pride and so on. Coming to have a relationship with Jesus Christ begins with examining your own self, not the measurable world around you. It's about acknowledging those sinful parts of your own nature, and in the knowledge you are guilty of sin, desiring to "aim up" with the realization that you are utterly incapable of doing that on your own. That is the essence of salvation, and what I have personally experienced, and can say to you with 100% honesty that God is there and that your reason will be edified, not destroyed, by His presence in your life.

@@michielkarskens2284 Really? O_o. What part exactly? I would bet you didn't listen to any of it outside of maybe the introduction, correct me if I am wrong. I was able to tie in a lot of what JP said to ideas and thoughts I have had myself that I couldn't fully flesh out but understood they were there and meant something. He is trying to say that ( from my perspective ) without a proper hierarchy of ethics or values ( whether that be from a religious background or not ) to keep people's perspectives and decision making in line with doing the "right thing" as best we can in most situations there would be chaos like what is going in the world right now. Also, that people observe objects and situations as meanings and when they don't have a proper ethical foundation to understand or weigh the values relative to the meanings or to make the correct decisions then you get situations like the examples he gave about people furthering their careers in social sciences and other areas through affirming things that are just not true. I got out of it something I have always felt when it comes to "empirical evidence" that most people can find something that they want out of a complex set of variables because what they are observing is meaning and not objects which can depend on the persons hierarchy of values. Really hard to explain, but I think you should at least give him a chance by listening intently to the whole thing.

This is brilliant. All waking hours we attempt to process meaning and understand the world we encounter. And there is always that tension of perception that inundates our feelings and our reasoning processes. We are creatures that are remarkably unaware of ourselves and the world around us. Collectively we construct our world view one brick at a time.
