John from www.growingyour... visits Pico Blanco Farm, a 1 Acre Beyond Sustainable Farm on a the hill above Escazú, Costa Rica that was started 30 years ago.
In this episode, John takes you on a tour of this well-planned permaculture farm that captures its own water, generates its own power, makes its own gas, produces its own fertilizer and grows fruits and vegetables in harmony with nature.
You will discover some of the common and more uncommon fruits and vegetables are grown on this permaculture farm. You will learn some of the many systems that are in place to turn this farm into a zero-waste paradise where all black water (sewage) and grey water is bio filtered and used to grow food.
You will learn how gravity is used to water this terraced farm on a hill by using pipe reduction to increase water pressure.
You will discover some techniques for stopping erosion by increasing soil organic matter and getting roots in the ground.
You will learn some of the planning and techniques that one man used to turn an undesirable property on a hill to one of the most impressive permaculture farms I have ever visited.

You say near the end of the video that Ugo is one of the most humble people you've ever met. You know the word humility (same root in Spanish) comes from a Latin word for earth (humus!). So someone who is humble is close to the earth! Excellent and important video. I love learning about these quiet heroes! Thank you for making this.

I lived there on Pico Blanco Escazu 40 years ago when it was paradise. Then the amount of pesticide and herbicide dumped on that mountain caused an inordinate amount of birth defects and cancer. And there it remains to this day. Sadly. Yet brings back fond memories the fruits and flowers and friendliest and happiest people on Earth

John what your doing is amazing..... God bless you.... I was very sick 2-incurable cancers...may 2011 I was diagnosed "highly treatable but incurable " was what doctors told me..... Jesus healed me 3 years ago...I am cancer free now ....I was FORCED to learn to eat right..... I'm now healthy.. Not 250 pounds anymore.... My only problem is I'm allergic to everything now...lol. Bone marrow transplant ...I thank God for my allergies now.... I know right away if something is toxic.... "If it don't mold.....don't eat!" Very refreshing to see you get emotional....

One of your best videos yet. I too am bothered by how sanitation is handled in US - to flush drinking water and dispose of nutrients that could quite easily water and nourish our plants, and to go through the expense of replacing an aging infrastructure with more of the same is just a shame. Just like composing in place, the world would benefit from sanitation in place if handled properly. I do what I can, and wish I knew how to help make a difference on a larger scale.

I absolutely LOVE how emotionally passionate you get about growing and sustainability and people, and helping people. I am the same way. I live , breath, and eat growing plants; striving for health, striving to be more and more Loving to myself, others, and the earth and environment every day. I recently was in Cuba, and instead of staying at the resort, whining about the food and service like the rest of my family, my partner were out in the communities, meeting and helping the people and learning about their growing conditions. You are one of the best that I follow for growing tips on the net. Forever your fan and your supporter. Thank you for everything throughout the years.

Of course. It was difficult to translate on the fly and quick so its easy to edit. Also don Hugo was using some words that we could recall at the moment :)

I love the idea of living on a sloped property. I do not think that there is anything gross about cooking with methane from poop, because of the fire purification but I read that you can get more methane from food waste than poop.

This is true freedom 😍 and the best foods you could possibly eat 😋 I can tell you liked that edible flower you put the seed in your back pocket 😉

Very good video John, I love it. Thank you for sharing this video. It’s long but very informative and educational. I love how green the surroundings of the property is. I am watching it while doing the dishes and organizing my makeups💄.
