Even before the Tamils there were Hindus in indonesia . Java (island in indonesia) is even mentioned in Ramayana. Moreover I think credit has to be given to their native Indonesian emperors who stayed true the faith like Majapahit, etc.
Tamil Rajas didn't spread Hinduism in South East Asia. That region was already Hindu-Buddhist by that time. Cholas of Thanjavur, Palas of Bengal all had trade relations with Sri Vijaya empire of present day Sumatra region, Sailendras of present day Java region. The region which comprises of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand was under Khmer Dynasty or Angkorian dyn. The Angkor Wat temple was built by Raja Suryavarman of Angkorian dyn, which was a Hindu-Buddhist dynasty. They all had flourishing trade relations with India in the medieval era
