Bi Representation

Bi representation is a tricky thing. First of all, it's hard enough to even find bisexual people in movies, TV, books, music, and so on. We're the single largest portion of the LGBTQ+ community, but one of the most underrepresented in media. But that's just where the problems begin, because it can sometimes even be unclear as to what constitutes bisexual representation. Case and point: When We Rise. It's a wonderful series that chronicles moments throughout the LGBT Rights movement. The series creator, Dustin Lance Black, claims he included bi people in the series, but many members of the Bisexual community beg to differ. So who is right? Well, to understand the answer, we've got to actually examine the issue of bi visibility and bi erasure. Despite contributing to the culture and heritage of the LGBTQ+ community, we've largely been erased from the history books. So people think that bi history exists as its own thing. Furthermore, many people think that merely having a character show interest in more than one gender constitutes bi representation. But allow me to explain the issue with that thinking, and why myself and other bi activists keep repeating the line "SAY THE WORD!"
As a quick side note, thanks to Dustin Lance Black for engaging with me on Twitter, and please do check out When We Rise since, critiques aside, it is a wonderful and important series.

This is so important! Before my current relationship I was dating a guy and everyone assumed I was straight. And now I'm dating a girl and everyone assumes I'm a lesbian. It's like bisexuality isn't even possible? It's so frustrating. Bisexual erasure in media affects bisexuals in real life. Love your videos. You make very good points.

That's like when I told my mom. I told her when I came out that being bi means that you're interested in both genders, and she said that she didn't get it. Like, what's there to not get? It's really simple.

I have noticed when a lot of writers DO write explicitly bi characters, they use phrases like they "don't use labels" or "it's complicated" which is all fine and well, but it's rather a double standard when those same writers have no qualms about writing a character that outright says he's gay or she's a lesbian, or even at times to clarify that they're straight... but Heaven forbid anyone use the dreaded "B word."

I saw a exchange on Tumblr about sappho where somebody pointed out that she wrote poems about both men and women and how the lesbian Community ignores it then as if On Cue a lesbian said something like can we just not label everything and the person replied with something like it's funny how the only time you don't care about labels is when that label is bisexual.

On the brighter side of bi representation, Grey's Anatomy has great representation in Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) who explicitly states multiple times that she is bisexual. "I’m bisexual. So what? It’s called LGBTQ for a reason. There’s a B in there and it doesn’t mean Badass. Okay, it does, but it also means Bi."

This is actually something that's been bothering me a lot recently. I'm bisexual, but I'm not out to my parents, mainly out of fear of them not believing me or not understanding. It doesn't help when characters on TV are in a happy relationship with the opposite sex, then enter into a happy relationship with the same sex without any indication of them being bisexual. My parents always assume that "oh, I guess she's lesbian now." when I suggest that perhaps the character is bisexual, they always look startled and confused. It never even enters their minds. It's not encouraging.

Someone mentioned below that there's a character in a show called Shadowhunters named Magnus Bane. The show handles his bisexuality better than I've seen in any other show. He had a past lover who was female and who kept trying to win him back etc. and he's now fallen in love with a male character (they recently won Outstanding Drama Series for GLAAD). They discuss that he's had multiple exes (he is immortal in the show and therefore makes sense why he would) and he openly states that he's "been with men, women, seelies, warlocks, vampires, a djin or two". His current boyfriend on the show even states that he doesn't care how many people he has been with and how it's not weird fo him to talk about this long past that Magnus had with Camille, who was the lady trying to win him back. I'm sure there are some things that could be portrayed a bit better, but Magnus is easily one of the best representations of the bisexual community on television for the time being. Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in fantasy stuff.

+Katelyn Terbovich Okay but does him being with so many different beings make him Bi or pan? Discuss...
@harleybaker4684
@harleybaker4684 7 лет назад
TheNotAdam I guess that depends on if said beings were male, female, or other.
@katelyn2100
@katelyn2100 7 лет назад
TheNotAdam I mean, I wouldn't think it'd make him pan, simply because so far, the show has been keeping the gender binary and so far, none of those creatures listed have had a different gender than in the binary. That could change, but since the tv show is based off of books, the guy he's currently with is the one he's staying with. I think the multiple creature thing was to show Alec (his boyfriend) that because he's immortal, he's had multiple partners (17,000 but given he's 400 years old). That discussion is actually interesting as well and something I haven't seen before on television. Or entertainment in general. When the line "I've been with men, women, seelies, etc.." happens, Alec had asked him how many exes Magnus had because they just brought light to the fact that although Alec is in his 20s, he's never been in an actual relationship (minus the arranged marriage that he put himself into to keep family "tradition"). Once Alec figures out how many people Magnus has been with, he'd become insecure because he likes someone who's been with 17,000 other people. It made him feel insignificant. However, the next line was said by Magnus and it's pretty interesting. "Look, I am who I am, and you are who you are. But right now, I'm here. With you. So let's just make the most of it." I find it interesting because I feel like there's not a lot of popular shows out there that have openly had a conversation about this. Many people (as you've mentioned many times in your bi-centric videos) tend to believe that bi people are "sluts" or just really like to sleep around. Well, this show had that conversation and Magnus didn't feel guilty for having been with multiple people, but rather helped Alec realize that he likes who and what he likes and he's not ashamed of it. Later in said episode, Alec is still trying to process the amount of exes, but comes to the conclusion that if he wants to be with him, he's going to have to put that aside because that's not the main focus of a relationship. He later goes back and says "Look, I don't care how many people you've been with" and Magnus replies with "I don't care how many people you haven't been with". Pretty much dispelling 2 things. One, that bisexual people can be with many people and that's okay. 2, that anyone can known their sexuality while not having been in a relationship. Yeah, most of the fandom knows that Alec is gay because of the books, but someone who hasn't read the books could still see that. Sorry for travelling off there into another topic.It's 6:30am and I just woke up.

He describes himself as "freewheeling bisexual". The thing that is really enjoyable out the character is that he doesnt hide it at all and is very open about the fact that he has had relationships with both men and women.

One of my favourite bi representations came from a TV show called Chasing Life, the supporting character, Brenna Carver, was an out and proud bisexual girl. She mentioned the word bisexual a lot, and whenever she got mislabeled as gay or straight she would correct them. Throughout the show she has relationships with both men and women, and there was even an episode where they debunked a bunch of bisexual myths and addressed the discrimination of bisexual people in the lgt+ community. 10/10 would recommend watching it if you're looking for some good bi rep!!

I always find so much comfort in the fact that you're out there talking about these things so eloquently tbh. When it comes to bi representation in media, I never seem to stop getting disappointed even tho I'm never surprised anymore. I think, out of everything, I'm most annoyed by this "I don't like labels" thing that media creators attach to bi+ characters. I mean, yeah, there are people out there who don't like labels, but in media these people are ALWAYS bi (or pan or something else who knows since we're never told). There are never straight characters or gay characters who don't like labels. And I think, sometimes, it's a misguided attempt to be inclusive. There's this idea that "they just fall in love with people regardless of gender and they don't make a big deal of it and they don't need a label, isn't that nice?" And maybe it would be if this wasn't applied to so many bi+ characters. In and of itself I think the idea is well-intentioned (at least from some people), but when it's applied so often it just becomes a way to avoid saying bi or pan, and you end up with bi and pan people just never being mentioned. It's almost as if the word bi carries too much baggage for people to use it, but it's like... if they never use it to apply to people who ARE bi, how on earth are we ever going to create a fuller picture of bi people?
@TheNotAdam

It's so easy to just put in the character saying "I'm bisexual" and it makes me so angry that so many creators don't get that. Just do it, it's not that fucking hard!!! 😡😡 It's hard to find good bi rep when I can't even tell which characters are bi+ or not.

Well said, RJ. Ya know, I don't think that the problem is that there aren't enough bi writers in Hollywood and writing books. I'm certain that we outnumber the gay writers significantly. It's a matter of feeling empowered enough to tell our stories. I say that as a bi author who, until recently, had a very low ratio of books that had bi characters to those without. It takes courage to risk you livelihood on including a character that you think could end up suppressing sales or viewership. But for all of the writers out there who happen to be bisexual, I'll tell you that it wasn't until I started writing bisexual stories that I had my greatest successes. And it wasn't because I was able to breath life into my characters in a way that I couldn't previously or some other creative reason like that. But because there is a market out there starving for such material. Bisexual writers, I'm telling you from experience, there is an incredibly untapped market out there. Learn how to service it and have at it!

I was in an acting class many years ago when I heard a bit of advice that has stuck with me ever since. We were talking about people who "make it" as an actor and the lecturer said, "There are only a few people who make it. But those who do, don't succeed in spite of who they are. They succeed because of it. So don't run away from who you are. Run towards it." It took me a while to realize just how great that advice was.

As a writer, I do have a bi character who openly identifies as bi (to clarify his interest in a girl who thinks he's gay) - but the biggest fear is that in writing flawed characters (all my characters are flawed) that identify as a marginalised portion of the community, I might be accused of writing a stereotype. On the one hand, writers get the message, 'don't make a big deal out of someone's sexuality'. On the other hand, the message here is, 'please make it more visible', which I'm happy to do if that's the preference. I write this particular character because he's representative of people very dear to my heart who are bi, and in doing that, I hope to give more visibility, while also not making it a big deal. I'm not famous (yet, heh), and the book with this character is still in editing, but it is one of my goals to help increase bi representation in a positive way. Just letting you know, you have allies. :-) KL

I have not seen this series but it was one of the next pieces of lgbt+ representation that I wanted to watch so this is rather disappointing. Its damn near impossible to find a bisexual character that is an actual person(not a stereotype) let alone find a character that defines themselves as bisexual. I have a friend that likes the way bisexuals are portrayed because its usually no big deal and these characters 'have no label' as she says. I'm trying to find the words to explain how important it is for bisexuals to actually be called bisexual/Pansexual. As much as I would love to be in a word where you don't have to have a label, now is just not the time to take a labels away from bisexuals as much as they do in media...I hope that made sense lol Great video RJ

Why is someone assuming anyone w/o a partner to be straight (hello hetronormativity) a bad thing? Is it bad to be straight? Not really, right? So why bother correcting? While I absolutely understand not caring what somebody else labels me, I can't help but feel a little bothered by it. Most people assume I'm straight which is fine until I tell them about my ex and then they assume I'm gay which of course is fine. But then I might talk about a crush I have on the opposite sex and they'll get really confused. I'll explain Bisexual to them and it'll be great but I sometimes wonder why nobody really assumes somebody is Bisexual, especially after having enough information to figure it out. Look, this really isn't that big of a deal to me but I get being annoyed at the tedious nature of having to tell somebody you're not monosexual because everyone assumes that everyone is monosexual.

Being only 1 year into my coming out as a bisexual male I've been researching and learning as much as I can about my identity in the LGBTQ community. I thought I'd find a wealth of info about acceptance and inclusion within but I have be sorely mistaken. which has been devastating to say the least. Then couple with that the stereotypical "bi" characters in TV and movies and add bi erasure in documentaries and my fears of coming out publicly would, by all indications, be disastrous. Also, because I've lived my life in confusion for 50+ years, I've built a whole public personae that could potentially lay waste to my relationships with family and friends. I come from a binary world in which there is no room for acceptance and inclusion so to come out as bi would most certainly confuse and confound. But by the same token I am who I am and I'm finally at peace with who I am and I really don't care about other's opinions about my sexuality. The only person in my life who's opinion that really matters is my wife's and her acceptance is paramount. At least I'm accepted in my own home. I'm hoping that one day I can live my life truthfully and never have to hide who I am. Anyway... As always, thank you RJ for your videos. You are one of the reasons I can feel confident in who I am. TheNotAdam Unfortunately the show Shadowhunters itself is pretty cheesy. The books are better, though very young adult/16 year old girl falling for the dreamy bad boy themed. The character of Magnus Bane however is pretty good and is very open about being bisexual. The guy he's with is one of the main characters which is kind of nice that it's not just shoved in the back (no pun intended) with two vague background characters. His boyfriend gets jealous of how many people he's been with (the guy is a 400 yr old immortal) who says something along the lines of "I've been with men and I've been with women. Some I truly loved and some less so. Im with you now and that is all that matters".

I think the potential solution to this is to have an actual bisexual person write characters who are bisexual. A lot of the arguments that I hear from say white writers, for instance, is that they don't feel it's their place and don't fully know how to write for say black characters without it coming off offensive. I think the same argument can be applied for writing for bi- characters. Bisexuals are definitely underrepresented and misunderstood which is why we have to support a wide range of storytellers who are bisexual, people of color, living with disabilities, ages, gender, etc.

I totally agree with everything you said, as usual. It seems like there are only two extremes when it comes to bi representation in the media. It's either that the only aspect of their being is their coming out or their experiences with eraser, or they're unsure or don't label their sexuality and just leave it as is. While both of these are real, it would be nice to see bi, pan, and multi sexual characters confirmed and just living life, whether or not it is actually 'relevant' to the storyline right in that moment. As well as just more representation at all, obviously. ❤❤❤

There are a few characters in British shows that are bisexual. Craig from Hollyoaks and Robert from Emmerdale, there are others but these are the two that come to my mind. I feel like British TV shows aren't afraid to say that a character is bi. In fact, Emmerdale brings it up as much as possible, but it's a soap opera so it is kind of hard to say that he's a positive character. Anyways love the video as usual, really glad you are here on RU-vid!

I don't think they've ever outright said Craig was bi. In fact, John Paul right up to his return was saying Craig never came to terms with being gay, hence the problems in their relationship. I think to a point Hollyoaks falls into the trap of having bisexuality be a stepping stone to being gay. This was seen with Doug and Ste, both of whom have stated that what they had with their past female relationships was the real deal... but they're gay. Robert, on the other hand, does come off as better representation.

I want to share this everywhere, good summary of everything I feel about what representation is lacking and the thing is, writers copy off one another, or it seems like it. Lazy. And in an ideal world, I'd reject the need to clarify a queer character's sexuality but the immensity of unnecessary and misguided bi erasure makes me demand it be said, by the character themselves, clearly, not as a pun, joke, or punchline. Just say bisexual, it's a word that is normal. The only people confused about it are people who are not bi. Which is most writers. I may approach every new story with the mindset that any character is bi until specified otherwise but I know that the "general audience" needs it to be spelled out to them. No more "oh I like girls, I like boys, I like people but I'm not bi because I don't know how words work" BS. There are enough ambiguous, label-rejecting, freespirited characters, now let's see some actual representation. Representation, not readings.

I thoroughly enjoy your series that you've been uploading to RU-vid. As a Bi person I do feel that Bisexuals are misinterpreted or underrepresented in media. Though there have been several bi characters introduced in recent years, I agree that it isn't talked about. I've become more vocal about my sexuality this past year or two for personal reasons as well as a role model reason (I know several people who don't actually talk about their sexuality and I want to be a safe place/person for others). So it's upsetting to me (and other bisexuals that I know personally) that the way we are portrayed is a stereotype and erased from media. On another note but along the same vein: I have directed my friends to your channel, not only because of your eloquent videos, but because it's difficult to talk about these issues let alone feel okay thinking them as well (sometimes). So thank you for your series. It means a lot.

About the part where you mentioned that it's important for writers to make it clear that a character is bisexual: I'm bi myself and also a screenwriter, and I totally understand that representation of bi characters is important to clear up any misconceptions and battle stigma. I just think that sometimes (from a stylistic point of view) it can seem a little bit like tokenship, in the same way that Mad Men clearly only incorporated black characters several seasons into the show for statistical reasons and therefore kind of took away their agency as legitimate characters. I'm writing a spec script at the moment for a queer-related show, and I'm trying my best to "right" the "wrongs" about how queer characters, including but not limited to bi characters, have been portrayed in film in the past. I have a bi character as my main protagonist, but I'll definitely make sure that it's made very clear that he's attracted to both (and probably all) genders through the dialogue. I just think that writing a piece of dialogue where a character blatantly say "I'm bisexual" can seem a little bit cheesy in some circumstances. In other narrative situations, it can also sound really profound. Maybe I have internalised ideas of biphobia, idk. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@TheNotAdam
@TheNotAdam 7 лет назад
I definitely grappled with this myself a lot, until I realized that I have to assert my bisexuality all the time. People mislabel me as gay all the time because of my marriage. More often than not, I try to correct them, which will often times lead to a discussion about how bisexuality exists even when you're married and sexual identity is different from behavior and so on and so forth. So in that way, it's not tokenship if you actually explore conflicts central to your character's bi identity, since tokenism just involves minorities sitting in the background and being completely passive.

I think the problem is part of an overall tendency in society to want simple definitions for everything and everyone. There is a rejection of complexity, in media, in debate, and in storytelling. It is a shame, because truthfully people and our world resists simplicity.

I appreciate your videos so much because bi people are pretty much invisible in the media. People like you spread awareness and show that we do exist and we are valid.

Great video as always. But hey you're not a 'nobody' compared to Mr Black, you're our hero :) I'm happy whenever theres LGBT stories being told so I'll definitely check this series even without bi representation (I never expect much for bi people anyway... sad). We as bi people need to stand out more in the community and make ourselves visible so people don't forget about us, I think gay people like to concentrate more on other gay people and bi people are just the 'kind of gay people'. Labels like the one used on a video just recently uploaded by the channel MsMojo titled 'Top 10 Celebs you didn't know go both ways' don't help either. We have a name... Also I definitely understand the problem in having a character being openly bi, since there are people in real life too who don't label themselves. But I think I remember 2 characters in the history of everything actually saying the word bisexual, thats not good enough.

I love this topic since I just watched the second season of Sense8 and literally had to stop and cheer when they introduced a bi character. And yet, the character does not say she is bi, but rather explains that she falls in love with a person and not their genitals. This was big for me as a bi woman since this is how I have always viewed myself and my sexuality. The one thing I really like about Sense8 is that the bi character is not a villian or troublesome character as characters like Frank Underwood or Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in Cruel Intensions. And there are so many characters in movies that could be bi but we don't know because they don't say. I always think of Susan Sarandon's character in Jeff In Real Life or Jane Fonda in This Is Where I Leave You. There are so many chances to talk about and build these characters but it hasn't happened yet. Great video and thank you for sharing the bi experience.

I also love how Sense8 demonstrates a way for a character to "come out" without saying the "dreaded B word". Game of Thrones did something similar.
@mechantechatonne

Man, the question of sexuality on sense8 is so??? There is so much in the way of characters having sexual and romantic interactions with people of both genders without any clarification about what that means about these characters and how we're supposed to interpret it. Is the entire cluster bi/pan? If not, then what is going on with their sexual interactions with each other? Are Nomi and Amanita both lesbian, or is one or both of them bi? And what the hell is going on with Dani/Lito/Hernando? Is that a poly situation or two dudes and a really close friend or what? Sense8 represents a lot of things but doesn't really specify just what the hell is going on there.

Thank you so much for this post in particular. We need more exposure to Bi history. I rarely hear of Brenda Howard, yet she is the reason we have annual Pride Parades. I do think When We Rise is worth watching though it's based on Cleve Jones' book which accounts for the gay lens through which these events are viewed.

I, as a bi woman, am currently writing a book. And even I, as a very outspokenly bi person, wrote the main protagonist as fully 100% lesbian. And the love interest as bi. Or possibly just lesbian. I _didnt_ want my protagonist to be bi, I knew people would probably take it more seriously as LGBT if she was just bi. It took actually alot of deciding to even make her bi. But I'm happy I did. We need bi representation, and I hope to help that, even a little bit. If _I_ think that bi's aren't seriously LGBT, than it's not great,,,

I'm happy that ABC let Hulu have it because that is where I got a chance to watch it. After every episode I was tearing up and by the time I got to the end of "When We Rise" I was sobbing and crying like I was at a funeral. I absolutely loved the entire miniseries and can understand why DLB didn't just not explicitly show bi people but a host of other sexualities. It was a huge cast and it could only show the story of these 3 main characters that also happened to be friends. I would love to know more about other people's sexuality and would even encourage RJ to write something like what he's proposing. Write a book, short story, TV or movie about some bisexuals. I would watch it.

You are one person who gives me the strength, knowledge and acceptance overall to understand my sexual orientation. A straight black man in my intercultural class did not understand that bisexuality is not a preference, he said that I do not understand it is not a thing right? and he went on to keep saying well if I want to date black girls one day and than I can move on from that and date white girls. Even going as far to say that bisexuality is linked with prostitution. I sure did give him a piece of my mind, my professor backed me up as well. Okay I'm at a weird place with this... firstly I did watch the series (and loved it) and I'm bi. My thoughts on the series is it was a 4 part thing spanning 40ish years of history so obviously it's just going to be surface level things with the in depth part being focused on the actual characters. Also it was based on real people so it focused on their lives. I thought the series was good and important I mean prime time for LGBT that's awesome and kinda new. In real life a lot of LGBT people (I watch or know) talk about how normal we are I mean we're around every corner yet we get so upset when characters don't specifically state their sexuality. I mean I don't go around saying "hi I'm bi nice to meet you" I live my life and people just notice it or not. So while I get the uproar because bi people didn't say "I'm bi" in the series, at the same time the series was huge for LGBT in general so I don't really care... I mean obviously we exist I don't need a tv show to tell me I do or don't exist I just do. I also understand that it's important to have representation on tv, but we still have a problem with white washing and not having LGBT characters at all... so me nitpicking a series about LGBT history (history that no one ever teaches you) makes me feel bad/weird... So I guess what I'm saying is over all I get people justifiable being upset. I just see no point sense there are so many other injustices with bad character portrayals...

May be somewhat unrelated, but I was thinking about why people hate on bisexuals as a potential partner the other day. It honestly makes no sense to me at all... If we're all in this community together why not just accept things like that for how they are? If whenever I got into a relationship with someone and they say "I'm bisexual" my response would be "Cool!". The end. Doesn't change who they are as a person or who you've been with up until that point in time. I'm 90% certain you've made a video on that subject as well. Bi representation in media is SO important yet so lacking. Writers who don't identify as bi have continuously skated over bisexuality entirely or had their characters become the embodiment of the shrug emoji. That's why SAYTHEWORD is so important. I can honestly say that bi rep on RU-vid has made me so much more comfortable in my identity and I hope mainstream media can see that and writers can adjust their storytelling accordingly, as I also hope to do one day as a writer. As comfortable as I am now in my identity, it is just as important to show more than just one face to bisexuality. In my bi rep exploration of mainstream film and tv, I personally think Grey's Anatomy and Shadowhunters have done the best job portraying bisexuality without being taboo or stereotypical. We need to see trans bi people, bi people of color, and healthy bi relationships dynamics that's aren't founded in jealousy. Media greatly influences how we see other people and how we relate to those different than us. Destigmatization of bisexuality starts with empathy in storytelling that reaches the masses. Thank you so much for the video, RJ. This is easily my favorite series on RU-vid. Much love.

I did see the series. LOVED IT! I am GAY. I do not split hairs. L, G, B, T, Q, +, are ALL minorities. I teared up watching each of the four parts of that series, and was SO HAPPY to see Mr. Black show the SUFFERING that EVERYONE did. ( And is STILL SUFFERING, in my opinion). I reiterate, I will not split hairs- I think EVERYONE should be grouped together, to fight for our rights! ( I will not be able to enjoy them- I am too old, still in the closet, from an earlier era.) But, I am SO GLAD for series' like this, that may make it easier for ANY LGTBQ+ person to finally live life. I follow you and Will, and love your vlogs, but I just had to voice my opinion. Thank you for allowing that, RJ. "Con amor y apreciacion!"
@TheNotAdam
@TheNotAdam 7 лет назад
+prmgr0767able Exactly how is asking to be included splitting hairs. Yes we unite in solidarity whoever there is a common purpose or threat, but there are different issues facing different facets of the community. One in particular for Bi people is this constant lack of representation (including and especially in LGBT spaces) when we are, in fact, the largest subset of the group. And you're right, we all fought and we all suffered, so why aren't we all portrayed? It may not occur to you as someone who identifies as gay, but a lack of visibility in LGBTQ+ spaces makes Bi people and others feel like they don't belong, thus keeping them in the closet.

In the media I feel like RU-vid, Twitter, Instragram & even FB you'll find a lot more discussion & bi representation. TV wise always been a bit shaky. Recently there's definitely been more, but you still find the shows stereotyping and falling into clichés or not being clear at all Than you have the awful LGBT troupes in said TV shows ie The 100, of Buffy with WillowThis is why I love RU-vid because you find education videos like this, open discussions, and definitely a lot more people who are representing themselves as Bi and who are outside the "stereotypes" like some awesome webseries who do an amazing job at displaying different LGBT groupsIt's a fight that's for sure, and I feel like the more we keep connecting & discussing and being out ourselves the better it will get. TV shows like Wynonna Earp whose show writer Emily Andras has always publicly spoke about being a huge supporter of LGBT character *even though I'm still waiting for a character to call herself Bi, I feel hopeful

I'd never heard of When We Rise until I saw this video just now, but I have similar criticisms about In The Flesh. It's my favourite TV show and, according to the creator's Twitter, the main character is pansexual and his sister is bisexual. However, the show never straight-up says anyone's orientations and both of these siblings are portrayed as only being attracted to men, so someone who hasn't seen certain tweets from ITF's creator might then come to the conclusion that Kieren is gay and Jem is straight. (I mean, the creator has also said that if BBC hadn't axed the show prematurely, then Jem would've gone on to have a girlfriend in the third season. But still, the material we have only shows her as being attracted to dudes.)

As a bi girl, I'd just be satisfied having any gay character be the MC of a book where the focus and plot isn't centered around their sexuality. I have luckily come across a few books where a side character is, but very few MCs in my main genres (fantasy, urban fantasy, sci fi, horror shorts) At least in OITNB there is a hint of it. I'd love to see it in anime, and not the hardcore yaoi or Yuri or the all to gentle slice of life type stories (My Monster, House of the Rising Sun) but that's highly unlikely, even In BDSM mangas like Nana to Kuro. Hi, I know that you did this video a while ago, and that you are doing sooo good in vocalizing bi visibility. I just wanted to point out some good news: in OITNB Piper, in I don't remember if season 3 or 4, says openly that she likes men and women, and at some point I think she says she is bisexual. I also don't know if you know, but Piper Kerman, (I hope I spelled it right) the writer of the memoir from which the series started and from who Piper Chapman is based, is openly bisexual and has addressed the issue several times in interviews and such. Again, I know you have your best intentions, so I wanted to say this as something positive that means we are moving forward with bi representation. In case you haven't realized, I'm also Bi :)

They series took on the stories of gay people. Very important, brave people, so I see why it did. It still would have been nice to have some clear acknowledgment of our community. There were multiple protests, marches, rallies, even vigils displayed. Could there not have been a sign or a flag or something to give a nod towards the B in LGBT+?

Dustin Lance Black Say ‘Get Writing!’ “To anyone who says, ‘Hey, I didn’t see me represented in When We Rise,’ and they’re angry about that, I say, ‘Good! Get angry, and get writing!’” Black countered. “I can’t do it all - and I shouldn’t do it all,” he went on. “I’m hoping anyone who feels they’re still missing their piece of our history gets to work! If they need any pointers, I’m happy to help.” www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/when-we-rise-didnt-tell-your-story-oscar-winner_us_58d0e980e4b0537abd957482

+Carmen P.C.R. Seems like a bit of a cop out when you're attempting to run the gamut of representation across the acronym and conspicuously omit the single largest slice of the pie.

Please watch SKAM season three (you can watch it online: skam-online.tumblr.com/episodes). Even is bisexual (to my understanding at least). I love this season of SKAM. The chemistry between those two boys is really great. Love to see more stuff like this on mainstream. (I think there is far to little LGBT+ love in films/series anyway) Edit: the word Bisexual and Pansexual are used in a discussion in SKAM. However this is a season about LGBT+ and it is made with a lot of love and understanding.

I actually haven't seen the series and probably shouldn't judge because of that, but Idk, from what I've heard people say about the show so far, it hasn't endeared me to watch it. That's great to hear Black was nice to you on Twitter, but there's a person I met at an LGBT+ conference who he was very dismissive and mean to, and they made many of the same points you did in a calm manner, and mentioned the show's lack of trans representation. So I have super mixed feelings about the series (even though I haven't seen it), and I just don't know that I'm going to watch it. It's very conflicting.

In the show The Magicians, Quentin has a relationship with a woman, and later with a man. Both relationships are portrayed as real. Neither is played for laughs. Both relationships cover multiple seasons. Good show, for many reasons.

It never occurred to me that in anything I have watched in which a character is bi...no one ever actually says the word! The only time I have heard it was in The Real O'Neals in which Kenny, a gay teen, thinks, "Oh, God. Here we go. Webbed toes? Money problems? Or worse... bisexual?!". What is endlessly annoying me as far as characters is Sarah on DC's Legends of Tomorrow. She both had a girlfriend and was with Oliver, too, (not at the same time). Since being on Legends though she has ONLY been with females and ONLY shown attraction to females. One of the male characters even referenced it saying, "This filly likes other fillies." Why? It was awesome seeing a bisexual woman be portrayed as a kick-ass warrior, rather than a drunk college girl who was "just experimenting." Someone pointed out that to have her show interest in both would push the stereotype that we are promiscuous, but she is already showing that by jumping on chicks all the time. I just want to see the attraction to men at least referenced. A single line about how hot some guy looks. I'm not asking for a female Captain Jack Harkness...though I would love that! I feel like The Magicians is representing fairly well and I wish Supernatural would take a cue from them and realize men kissing neither makes them gay, nor ruins the show. Okay. Rant done.

Sara Lance!!! She's the most kickass character in the show and becomes captain of the squad, I highly recommend if you're into action, time travel, and positive LGBT representation.

Could you please send me the links for the research you did on the history of the term "Bisexual" ? I'd really like to read and discuss it at my next LGBTQI youth group meeting.

Literally the only explicitly-stated bisexual fiction characters I can think of across all media types is Magnus Bane (Shadowhunters), David Alleyne (Young Avengers), Mark Bryant (The Bright Sessions) & Callie Torres (Grey's Anatomy). I probably know more, but the full list wouldn't be much longer
