Yeeee! I've done my first bias dress ☺️

The paper pattern was a HUGE help toward understanding what you're going. And I love the pockets are cut with the dress, not added on.

Absolutely gorgeous! 💯% for French Seams and the belt is the cherry on top! Thank you for such a wonderful demonstration! 😊 🎉 Prior Comment since Edited:- I ❤ bias cut dresses for the subtropical coast where I live in Australia. It gets so hot that this is the absolute perfect style for this climate! I also Adore hidden pockets ... and as I already have a bias-cut dress with similar pockets and is all cut on the bias (or we just used to call it cut on the cross). I've decided not to confuse the comment with a full description of the dress as it has 6 front panels, but each side panel is cut diagonally to give it even more fullness, and the centre panel is also cut in half, but horizontally, with the top middle half being flat, and the bottom half of the middle panel is gathered. The whole dress is cut on the bias, including the 2 sides panels on the bottom half of the front that are also cut diagonally. It makes for an absolutely gorgeously floaty, cool dress to wear, especially in summer. It's a cotton & linen blend fabric, so even the fabric is unusual. The side pockets are just an added bonus! I'd planned to make a couple of that style using the dress as a pattern, but it wasn't going to be easy! I just might copy your bias cut style instead ... I'll have to alter the shoulders on your dress, just to cover bra straps. I might also alter the neckline to a V, as it's not only a little cooler but the V neckline would also keep that 'cool' appearance of the dress. I'm 70, so it won't look as good on me as it does on you! I've only gained the extra kilos in the last 4 years, to 144lbs ...so I'm now fair fat and 70 now! I'd taken my slim figure for granted all my life ... and now I look like all of my friends! 😮 💡 to try:~ I use a flat iron for pressing tiny hems, bias tape, etc. Fast to heat up and easier to manipulate on narrow pieces of fabric ... as well as ribbons. I also really appreciated your use of tacking! It makes the difference between homemade and hand-made, as did your emphasis on pressing the stitches into the fabric. This is something that makes a huge difference to the finished garment. There's also a big difference between 'pressing' the stitches into the fabric and 'ironing'. Ironing causes the stitches to move back and forth across the fabric, as the iron is virtually pushing the threads back and forth on the fabric. 'Pressing' is lifting the iron 'up and down' on the fabric, as opposed to regular 'ironing' which pushing it back & forth across the stitches. 'Pressing' allows the thread of the stitches to almost 'become one' with the fabric, or 'set' them into it. I learnt this from a RU-vid channel where they are real artists and make couturier fashion. They also had a few different shaped pressing items other than a regular pressing 'ham'. I learnt a few fashion finishes from looking at some of my mother's clothing. Fine lace, such as nylon or polyester, was usually sewn onto the raw edge of hems, making them virtually invisible on the soft floaty fabrics, and stops any hemlines showing on heavy fabrics when drycleaned or pressed, whilst also covering the raw edges. It has that extra little bit of very pretty hidden femininity. The lace is equally useful for fine fabrics, or heavier ones. It's particularly good for using heavy fabrics such as wool as it reduced the thickness of the turned-up hem. They also used small weights in the hems of fine/light fabrics, 'for modesty', in windy weather. Marilyn Munroe wouldn't have had that wonderfully gorgeous and iconic photograph if her skirt had weights sewn into the hem! Well-tailored ladies' slacks usually had/have bias cotton tape on their hems, and men's trousers had the bias tape and a small piece of leather sewn onto the hem inside the back, just where they touched/rubbed against the back of the men's shoes. It's sad to see some of these professional finishes being lost because of the cheap, mass-produced factory clothing of today, as they don't even seem to be used on the more expensive garments. Most of my mother's clothes were covered with hand stitching, covering the metal hooks & eyes, or finely fabric bound buttonholes, and either Hong Kong or French seams, and tailored slacks were lined to just below the knees. I hated sewing French & Flat fell seams at school, however as I began sewing a few things for myself, I always used French seams. I found flat fell seams far too difficult, however I discovered the trick to them. Instead of having to sew one side of the fabric so closely to the edge, I could just sew a regular seam, then just trim off the excess on the one side, and then sew the seam as usual for a flat fell seam, still with a nice narrow edge inside. It's a far neater and finer seam finish than a French seam. I've finally been shown how to use my overlocker. I'm so grateful to my friend for showing me how to use it! Prior to an overlocker, I've relied on pinking shears if in a hurry or for inside linings, but mainly used French seams. I'll now use either flat-fell seams, or the overlocker, depending upon what it is. Is it worth bringing back some of these things for the gen X, Y & Z. I have a friend who is in her early 50s, and I had asked her to "Just tack the side hem for me please" ... and she looked at me as though I asked her to build me a space rocket and then fly a mission to Mars! 😅I dread to imagine what her reaction would have been if I'd asked her to pop some tailor's tacks onto something to mark the bust points, etc. We did at least giggle about it! 😊 I also remember having 'rope' petticoats for my dresses with gathered waists. They were just gathered petticoats with rows of fine cotton fabric, and the rope was sewn between each row, (similar to piping but with rope) the hem of each row that was around 6 to 9 inches deep. I had 2 of these petticoats. They were very lightly starched, and I felt a million dollars when I wore them with my beautiful dresses that had gathered skirts. They were like the rockabilly dresses nowadays! 😊 I hope that my post hasn't been too boring, but that it's has added a few little things that seem to have been lost over the years. - NO reflection on this fabulous Channel! B.T.W. I don't understand your problem with the interlining.

@@LenaBritArtist Thank you for your reply. I've just re-read my Comment. I've corrected some of the 'auto-corrections' that made it unreadable, and I've attempted to clarify some of my sentences. I'm sorry that my comment was so long, but my fingers just seem to take over sometimes! Maybe I'm just a frustrated writer! 😉 🇦🇺Your fan from 🇦🇺 ♥ BTW. We finally have 'lift off' with my overlocker!! I now can't wait to finally use it, however I need assistance with my sewing as I have extremely difficult tremors similar to those with Parkinsons disease, but I don't let it stop me from trying! 😊 Would you mind telling me what country you are from? Thank you.

Beautiful dress, so clever. Don't take of the stiffener along the side seams, it is a stabilizer to prevent the seam stretching out. Beautiful work, impeccable finishing. Very well done, I love it!

I don't have a model form to hang the dress from for hemming, how else can I do this, worried about getting the hem right 😛
@purplepixie274
@purplepixie274 Год назад
I think you have to hang the dress or skirt for a few days to let the fabric stretch out. When it is on the bias /diagonal, the weave has much elasticity and it will stretch unevenly at first. So, use a trouser hanger that clips the waist hem or use several large bulldog clips across the waist. Hang it up on door frame or curtain pole and leave it. Once you can see difference after a while, you can re cut to make even.
