Even though I have sewn for years, I always learn from your videos. Your students are very lucky to have you as a teacher!

Oh my goodness. I am a total novice at sewing...failed my ONLY sewing class in high school and bought a sewing machine only to try and sew some cute clothes for my girls when they were little. I couldn’t see why to waste cloth by laying the pattern out on the bias so because no one explained the “whys” my rebel soul went the thrifty way! And now I understand why my sewn cloth always seemed to not fit well. Thankyou so so much

OMG. I wish I’d have watched this sooner. Struggled for 6 days with a camisole and never did get it right. Donated to Goodwill I’m going to cut it on the bias and try it again Thank you Thank you Thank you❤

This was a wonderful visual experiment. I did know, or think I knew, about bias, but your demonstration has totally cemented the idea in my head. Thank you.

Great job, I forget most people have never done a tour of a fabric factory. I lived 25 miles from Pendleton, OR and it was a popular place to take the 4H kids. Yes Pendleton woolen mills 😊

Excellent topic. I frequently use fabric, for quilting, without thinking about the bias. Now I will pay more attention. The more you know, the better the work will be.

I cut the sleeves for one of my tops on the bias and they are just so flowy without any extra fabric, was something I did after watching your previous videos and I love the effect it has.

That was not just useful, but also enjoyable, thank you. Can you show us when you next cut a piece of fabric on the bias, please? I suppose you lay the pattern pieces differently and have different leftovers... I'm always hesitant to make the first cut. It's so final 😂

Thank you! The camisole was a lovely example. I would wear more woven tops if they had that little bit of give and drape. I hope you do more of these short videos focused simply on techniques. Even when you mention these things in your other videos it's hard to go back and find the instruction.

This video couldn't have come at a better time! I'm going to try a technique I have never done before on an unlined coat. Most tutorials for the Hong Kong seam finishing use straight of grain strips. What would you recommend for curves such as armholes or neck? Could you also comment on ways to finish the hems on those garments using heavy wool? There's a significant amount of bulk if you turn twice as suggested on the pattern. You are a great teacher. Thank you as always.
@CatherineSews
@CatherineSews 11 месяцев назад
The straight of grain strips would work fine on long straight seam edges, but for curved seams, I’d definitely use bias strips! And I agree that heavy wool is too thick to turn twice. Instead, I’d either serve and just turn once, or sew seam ribbon to the raw edge of the seam and then hand sew the hem. That would be lovely. Thanks for watching and leaving a sweet comment!

Hi Catherine. Perhaps you could teach us some more bias magic? Like, if I lay my pattern out on the bias instead of straight of grain, is usually superior? I kinda realize it will use more fabric, but will it feel better and hang beautifully? Can I embroider on it?
@daxxydog5777
@daxxydog5777 11 месяцев назад
Only lay a pattern out as it says, as the designer has already taken all that into account. It’s not superior, it just behaves differently. Also, any curves on the bias of any garment should be stabilized by stay stitching or it will warp out of shape if pulled while being handled.
@angelbear_og
@angelbear_og 11 месяцев назад
@@daxxydog5777 Patterns are not gospel, they are merely someone else's idea and suggestion. It's always acceptable to experiment and find what works best for YOU! Even better if you ditch fast-fashion patterns and do your own designing. :)
