“And in reading of many books is distraction. Accordingly, since you cannot read all the books which you may possess, it is enough to possess only as many books as you can read.”-Seneca
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. “There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion. “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice! “Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.” - Umberto Eco
Loved this! And you're so right about reading/collecting. And as someone once said , "books do furnish a room". Just to run my hand over them on the shelf is satisfying. Knowing there are so many I shall never, ever read. Towards the end of his life, an interviewer asked Anatole France, after seeing some 20,000 volumes on his shelves, if he had read them all. To which he promptly replied, "barely one tenth"
Beautifully written and filmed. Also lovely to know there is someone with a kindred soul on the other side of the planet. Liked, subscribed and bell rang. I hope you keep filming and sharing the results. Greetings from a musician and book collector in The Netherlands, Europe.
This is amazing!! You expressed so much of what I feel, and I appreciate how personal yet universal it was. My mouth also watered seeing your local bookstores and your own books. Thank you!!💛
Hello fellow human bibliophile. Beautiful video which stopped me to the point that after watching, I closed my PC, stayed a while in the feeling of the video, dreamed of a house full of books and cats. And went back to reading my book. Your content really deserves a million subs!
Watching this, I realized that I'm not a Bibliophile or a collector. I'm a academic 😂 600s and counting, but apart from less a dozen, there's nothing special about them. In summa, it's a research library
I just finished Northanger Abbey and I’m in awe of the edition you have! I’ve already been checking used bookstores for another version than the one I have bc I would not mind in the least having multiple copies of that book. ❤
As soon as the image appeared on my ph screen i was thrilled; pressed to see, hear read her presentation. Regret to say i was very disappointed. Very! Not only did the speaker mumble & swallowed half the words, she spewed... and spewed bowlfulls of platitudes, bombastics & sentimental juvenalia. Paaaleeezz!! I screamed as i pressed the key to silence her. She will turn people off reading, off books. Her tone, her voice is extremely irritating... grovelling, obsequious, flirtatious. Totally inappropriate. So help me JC. From newzealand Aotearoa
