I am investigating bicycle noise in the drivetrain of this bicycle with 1000 km on it. Taking things apart and trouble shooting and putting it back together.

Someone here mentioned it sounds like #Helicopter and like you says "Normal" for #Izumi 👍
@finnatwood7240

All high end fixed gear parts make that helicopters noise, it’s because all the parts have to be built extra strong and tough. Also stock sram gxp bottom brackets kinda suck and like to clicking and creaking noises. Just invest in a chris king or phill wood gxp bottom bracket and you will have no issue
@BobbyHorror
@BobbyHorror 3 года назад
I agree with you on this, the clicking is probably the BB. Srams GXPS are such garbage, took me weeks to figure out what the fuck that awful clicking noise was lmao

Driving Izumis on all bikes for forever and bo matter what Chainring or cog the sound will apear in some way...some components are "louder" with izumis and some are not...thats normal..but there seams du be only very little space between your omnium and ths steel frame...under pedaling pressure the frame will work a bit more than aluminum so maybe that could touch a bit and causes noise...but thats only a guess

I think that noise comes from loose spokes on your rear wheel, i had the same noise and a good tension stope it inmediatly (sorry for my bad inglish, im from a spanish speaking country)
@pigeonkickr
@pigeonkickr Год назад
It’s either a spoke(s) tension issue or saddle rails, a drop of chain lube or wd40 where the rails meet the under body of the saddle. Hopefully that helps!

I just recently purchased and installed a new Selle Italia SLR Superflow Ti316 Saddle. It is super light, and the cutout is very comfortable for a mans physic, much better then the C15 from Brooks that I have. 🚲 I don't used WD-40 on my bicycle anymore, and I have trued my wheels and adjusted spoke tension. I have come to accept the sound of the drivetrain, except any obvious "Clicking" sounds that are not "Normal" ... whatever that means, but generally speaking, things have become noticeably quieter. Thanks for replying.

Im running a skeace outbound with izumi black and bike dome cogs. 100% same sound. Good to know that it is normal. Thank you!p

Wheel seems slightly out of true, but that’s not the issue. I want to say it’s a combination of Chain, Hub, Cog, bearings and their build quality) in this case a good thing. For some people it’s Preference I like a quiet, eerily quiet setup, but that’s kind of impossible without going to belt drive. Others like the Mechanical sound, a good, solid, sturdy mechanical sound. Which I do appreciate But I like the stealthness One of my bikes is a Mottled grey, flat against the road, it blends in. And I’ve gotten that thing as quiet as it will go. I’m thinking about going belt, there’s just something about a chain... all metal mechanics I dunno
@1Patient
@1Patient 3 года назад
I like your perspective. Ya, no, like you, I have my bike running as quietly and smoothly as she will go. There are those mechanical sounds, I actually do like... The belt drives seem interesting enough, as an alternative, but ya, the meshing of all the mechanical parts are definitely a desirable sounding Machine. Thanks for replying. Have a good one brother. Ride Safe.

The only thing I'd say is to always torque the GXP to spec. Always do that to BB's, stems, chainring bolts, saddle, made sure all them threads are also with a layer of grease to avoid that clicks from metal on metal. Also recommend you to replace the original chainring bolts with cromor or stainless steel ones, and apply grease in the threads(or locktite) and also between them bolts and the chainring and spider. Basically all metal with metal contacts. Just my 2 cents. Happy riding
@1Patient
@1Patient 2 года назад
@FabioPoupinha You will be pleased to know I have recently purchased the Park Tool TW-5.2 (expensive for what it is) and have torqued the Stem fasteners to spec. That GXP BB is plastic as you know, I usually feel that one out, no slop and minimal binding, however, I have discovered that this BB lacks adjustment and I think I have bottomed out on whatever range this BB has. Between 68mm and what is it 72mm anyway, I can't get the BB to get lower than 68, nor do I want to, because of Chainring and Chainring Bolt clearance issues. GPX is Garbage. Everything you said makes sense, change out the Chainring Bolts, get some lube or loctite on them and torque to spec. The clicks and popping of parts under load/stress when I'm riding still annoy me. I will do as you suggest my friend. Thanks for replying Fabio Play Safe.

Plan on replacing or overhauling the GXP BB periodically...or upgrade BB (PW/CK/Hope/etc) and add GXP adapter...and for a much quieter drivetrain consider converting to 3/32"chainring and cog...and use a KMC multi-speed chain...I run Omniums with a Sugino Mighty Competition 3/32" chainring and a 3/32" EAI cog with a KMC X11sl chain...the chain is 11/128" inner, but I've been running them for years with no issues even tho KMC told their 11/128" chains aren't compatible with 3/32" drivetrain...but they're wrong trust me...just clean and relube often...FinishLine Dry Lube...one drop per pin then wipe clean...super quiet, super light, and runs buttery smooth...good luck!

@4specialist
@4specialist Год назад
Did u figure out what the cause of the clicking was?
@1Patient
@1Patient Год назад
@@4specialist overall, No! I changed the saddle to a Selle Italia SLR SUPER FLOW T316, I've serviced the bb, I've purchased a torque wrench 🔧🛠️ and have made all the specs. I noticed that the GXP is bottomed out and can't tighten any more, even if I wanted to, but just won't let me. Caveat, The cranks spider chainring mounts come close to chainstay 1/32 or 1/64 territory. I have taken chainring off, cleaned everything put back together, I have clearance, and I have tightness, but every so often, I still get a clicking sound, almost like the frame has a loose or broken weld, frame creak... Almost... Until I try completely changing components one at a time to eliminate the noise, the frame will be last on my list, that might involve an X-ray of the welds, that would cost me $$$ and well, for a $700 frame, I'm not going to do that. The GXP is generally garbage, and as stiff as the Omnium is, I guess I like that, also, the chainring and crank can't be making noise either, and if that's the culprit, then in the garage it goes... 😃 Sooooo, Ya, to answer your question, No, I didn't figure it out yet.

el plato delantero es de 3/32" ? es posible que al llevar el piñon trasero de 1/8" con la cadena para 1/8" haga ruido, prueba a poner piñon trasero y plato delantero de la misma medida con su correspondiente cadena, a mi me funcionó!

I have noticed that the chain has stretched significantly Izumi Black (not the Tough chain). Someone commented that this sound from this chain has the sound of a Helicopter taking off or something like that...basically, when you get this kind of set up, it is sought after, because of the sound it makes. Myself, I'm liking a silent drive, not the noisy one... but hey, if you like it, go for it... it is still a nice set up... go with a tough chain though, if you don't want to keep replacing the softer steel chains... The black one looks amazing with the gold rivits... Thanks for watching, safe cycling brother.

My caad 10 cannondale for passed 6 months has a clicking near BB. TRPUBLESHOOTING IT as we speak i can buy a new frameset but i believe it can be remedied. I will trial n error everythinf before conclude its compeomised aliminum frame. Bikes are fun to learn about but the creaking clicking is o annoying

This noise seem to be the sound of a high quality chain. Some days ago i upgraded my bike to all new drivetrain components, all city cnc'd al7 chainring, 17t miche cog and 15t soma cog and a hv410 kmc chain, no sound at all from this combination of components. Then after 5 days of heavy rain the chain got rust and had to clean it multiple times in a week so I decided to upgrade the chain to an izumi tough guard for its claimed corrosion resistance. As son as I changed the chain this same sound appeared, no matter if the miche or soma cogs were used. If you like a silent drive train maybe try a hv410 kmc chain, but make sure to use the nickel plated version, not the bare steel version that i got, the chain is also lighter than the izumi if that matters to you

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry about your rusty chain experience. Ya, I'm pretty much used to the sounds coming from the drivetrain these days. I like the performance aspect of my chain. Izumi Jet Black with gold rivets Looks nice and holding up well. Take care, safe cycling brother. 🙂

so having the chain grinding noise is ok?
@1Patient
@1Patient 3 года назад
Yes... Infact, it isn't actually "grinding", rather frictioning, or Meshing together with minimal friction and lubrication to assist with the process so that it doesn't "grind", but Ya, that is the sound of my people... 😀😀😀 Happy cycling my friend.

I just installed an Izumi MASH black chain on my bike and it’s making virtually the same sound! Had a basic SRAM single speed chain before this and it did not make this sound. Good luck with the clicking sound! Setup: Vision track crank, EVO max BB, EAI deluxe cog, Izumi MASH black chain Hope this helps! I’m trying to quiet mine down as well.

Hi Dominic. Thanks for the reply. Your bike sounds amazing. I have done a few things since the original recording of this video 3 yrs ago. I have rode the bike now and have approx 1000 KM on drivetrain...which I might add has quieted down somewhat... it is where it's at and it is what it's going to be, just a mechanical sound of mechanical parts meshing together in perfect harmony :-) I have another video I did recently trying to identify the offending sounds, check it out if you want >>> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sUc7XNXHfqY.html Thanks for viewing. I wanted to go all out, so I installed a sugino zen chainring with sugino 75 cranks, njs hatta bottom bracket, eai deluxe cog, and izumi super toughness chain. this super expensive drivetrain is WAY lounder then my basic Andel Crankset, Andel BB, duraace cog, KMC z410 chain sounded.
@BullfrogHikes

I have a feeling it might be the izumi chains, the rollers on each link look kind of loose compared to the 12$ KMC chain
@1Patient

@@BullfrogHikes That is interesting that you say that. I am understanding, that these set ups all have their own Characteristic Sounds that identifies them individually just by virtue of sound of drivetrain. Thanks for the reply and enjoy that nice sounding ride you have. Drive Safe my friend.

That helicopter sound, isn't coming from metal chain and teeth meshing? It's metal on metal. I remember someone called this low humming a velodrome sound.
