Rolling around Cambodia's backroads gives us an inside look at rural life. The beauty and also the harsh reality of landmines and bombs from former conflicts heighten our senses to our surroundings. Loud music wakes us earlier than we bargained for and an encounter with a local “policeman” makes for a stressful start of a cycling day. After entering the Cardamom Mountains the weather turns for the worse and we get caught inside a lightning storm…

Thanks Mark! We would love to go lighter and do a more bikepacking setup but find it difficult with a multiyear and mixed terrain setup. Also camera gear and computers need a good place and we haven't seen the ideal bikepacking solution for that yet. Tips welcome 😊 (if you have any we would love to receive some tips by email...?) Hey you two! So I (Ron) was out for a week mountain biking in North Carolina, so I just got caught up. Like always, great video and looking forward to the next! Crazy that the "policeman" was harassing you. I wonder if he was looking for a few dollars in his pocket. The few times we wild camped in Cambodia it was all good and never an issue. Heck this one time we woke up with the locals checking us out and there was a local policeman there too and all was good. It was actually pretty entertaining with photos, traveler's sign language, and laughs. Anyway, again great video and please hurry... no don't hurry... yes hurry... no don't.... with your next video. ;-) We know it's coming to an end soon and that SUCKS since we really enjoy the adventure. Quick question, do you think you'll ever do another long trip like this again? Cheers from Florida, Ron & Petra

Hi Ron! Always nice to hear from you! Good to hear you guys had such nice camping experiences in Cambodia 😊 Haha, yeah the end is in sight... we are working on new ideas too... Perhaps this long out and about not any time soon. We would love to go a bit more in depth. Lighter setup, wilder places and mix it up with dedicated cultural experiences staying somewhere for a while, really getting to know a place, community or individuals doing the of the beaten path thing. The bike will be the main mode of transportation most probably but hiking is something we love too... Take care you guys, all the best from us!!

@@WheelstoWander likewise! Wish we could sit down for a Bier or 3 and discuss adventures. Yeah we also said for the next one, it will be slower going, so that we too can spend time in an area and really get to know it. This is the plan anyways. Hiking the entire AT (Appalachian Trail) is something on the bucket list, just not sure if my (Ron) back can take it. May just have to settle on cycling the Great Divide route from Canada to Mexico instead. Anyway looking forward to more of your adventure and until then take care and cheers from Florida. Nice to see a new chapter, yeah Asia, hot and humid. I remember being in Thailand sitting in the shade doing nothing and sweating like crazy. But I like the hot rain, it's like taking a shower and riding at the same time. BTW, the landmines, that is such a terrible legacy to live with, nobody knows where they are, you could be walking along and suddenly, you have no legs. Terrible.

Not a pleasant experience for sure. Storms and the pandemic and you did not know how you were going to get back to the Netherlands. Thailand is noted for it's beauty and because of the weather, bicycle crank and the pandemic you were not able to truly enjoy this country. Like most people the pandemic was going to vastly change your life. I am so glad you got home all right.

''Mast ''is on a boat. Electric Power Line Pole. Pole is the word I believe..at least in North America. Utility pole is another. By the way, your English is fantastic!

@@WheelstoWander I have never heard mast being used in Canada and I don't work in the electric power field. Depending on the shape etc. masts, poles and pilons are some of the words used. In terms of frequency , in this part of the world, I have heard ''mast'' used in sailing and for flags. Anyway, Keep up the great videos.

Good video. Thank you. It brought back vivid memories of Thailand - very similar temples and jungles as those in this video from Cambodia. I studied Theravada Buddhism for years, and did a lot of intensive Vipassana meditation. I feel a strong connection with that culture and approach. The Buddha's last words are often mistranslated. A faithful translation would be "conditioned things are by nature fugitive; without drunkenness, awaken into freedom." Often translated as "all things"; but that just isn't there in the original Pali. It is conditioned or aggregate things, not "all" things, leaving open the possibility of something eternal, or non-transient, non-fugitive - or even suggesting or pointing to something other than impermanent things.

Very glad to see you guys ok, nice Vid guys as always :D. I've been quite worried since past 2 weeks some parts of Cambodia's and Vietnam's country side is rendered un-accessible due to massive flood. I am glad to see you guys very cautious when it comes to land mines ( it's quite problematic in that region ) once you enter Malaysia - downward (Malay Indo) then no need to worry about land mine anymore. The more you go closer to the equator the more monstrous the rain, but the easier to read or detect by eyes. if you feel the temperature suddenly drop to 13 - 18 degree Celsius, Just look up, see how big (stretch up to +3km wide) and dark the cloud is around you, and check the direction they went, if within the next 10 min you will be under / already inside that cloud. better stop and prep your rain shelter immediately. So, feel free to test it :D. Looking forward for the next episode for this great adventure... Hope you have have a great time.

Thank you Al! The teeth and chain were worn making the drivetrain skip. We fixed it back home with all new parts. Now some extra TLC is needed on the headset and some other part too to make the bike adventure ready again. I believe the Trek 520 can be a very capable bike for the Cambodian roads 👍🏼 even the dusty ones ;.) All the Best, E&M

Thank you Bike Tall! This was filmed in March. We are doing good back home, thinking about future adventures... Ha, yes: the gloves were for protection from the sun. Fairly thin wool affairs so not to hot on the hands 😉 All the Best, E&M

Unless it's in the middle of the desert you have to assume that the land has a owner and/or someone looking after it. Thus, you always ought to try to find the keeper or a farmer to get camping permission or you might find yourselves in another unpleasant situation. No trespassing and be safe out there!

No you are wrong. I am guessing you are not a native English speaker or if you are your English is pretty poor. Whilst a mast is a term applied to a part of the rigging for a boat or ship, it is also any tall vertical structure on which something is hung or placed e.g. phone mast, electricity mast or indeed a pylon.

If you are interested in more effective masks than the typical ones, which usually leak badly around the edges and alongside the nose, there are reasonably priced single- and dual-cartridge respirators that are far better sealed around the edges. And they often have much more effective filtering material as well. They are markedly superior in both respects. "P100" is the designation used in the US for maximum filtration ability. These sorts of masks are often used by people who work with sprayed paints and other airborne chemicals and dangerous mists. (The 3M 7502 mask with #2901 filters is great, comfortable, and easy to breathe through; but there are many others that are good, and seal, filter, and protect well. Airlines exaggerate the safety of the air in their planes. Enclosed, crowded spaces are very conducive to spreading the virus.)

Hm, It is not much to see in Cambodia footage; except, riding in the rice field and national road. I thought you guys will video the capital and interact with local people. Don't worry about the land mine. It might have near the border of Thailand in the deep mountain, but not in the city or flat land.

So how do you do that I mean I don't really understand why that would still be a risk because I mean as long as you stay on the roads or on a footpath I would think that you would be okay because those are heavily traveled if they exist as a path.... The Schwalbe Marathon (Mondial) tyres are just great, they last for about 10.000 km (25.000+) on the back tyre and even more in front! We put about 3 to 3,5 bars in them!

"Masts" is great, better than "poles." However, in the US we usually say, "telephone poles." Sometimes "power poles." Never "masts." But I actually like "masts" better, even though I have never heard that word used in this way (to refer to these things that hold up electrical supply wires).

We make an idea what we would like to see (Wikipedia, etc.). Use Google maps and Bikemap.net to make the route and then use Map.me to navigate and deviate from the plan while cycling.

Doesn't really matter. It happened many years ago and bombs are generally not dropped by individual citizens, but by governments. No need to profess your innocence. It's part of history and it can't be changed. Besides, people in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia rarely hold a grudge against Americans.
