Sunnah and Bidah in Islam
Sunnah
The Sunnah is the Arabic word for "tradition" or "example." In Islamic terminology, it refers to the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Sunnah is the second most important source of Islamic law and guidance, after the Quran.
The Sunnah is important because it provides Muslims with a direct link to the Prophet Muhammad and his teachings. It also provides insights into the Prophet's character and personality, and it helps Muslims to understand the Quran and its teachings.
The Sunnah is divided into two main categories:
Qawl (speech): This category includes the Prophet's words and sayings.
Fi'l (action): This category includes the Prophet's actions and deeds.
The Sunnah is transmitted to us through the hadith, which is the record of the Prophet's sayings and actions. The hadith is a vast collection of sayings and actions, and it is important to find a reliable source for studying the hadith. There are many different books and websites that contain hadith collections, but it is important to make sure that the source is authentic and that the hadith have been properly authenticated.
Bidah
Bidah is an Arabic word that means "innovation" or "new thing." In Islamic terminology, it refers to any new practice or belief that is not rooted in the Quran or the Sunnah.
Bidah is forbidden in Islam because it can lead to division and disunity among Muslims. It can also lead to people following false teachings and beliefs.
There are two main types of bidah:
Bidah hasanah (good innovation): This is a new practice or belief that is good and beneficial, but it is not rooted in the Quran or the Sunnah.
Bidah sayyiah (bad innovation): This is a new practice or belief that is bad and harmful, and it is not rooted in the Quran or the Sunnah.
Examples of Bidah
Some examples of bidah include:
Celebrating Mawlid (the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad)
Celebrating the Urs (the death anniversary of a saint)
Building tombs and shrines for saints and other religious figures
Invoking the help of saints and other religious figures
Using beads or other counting devices to keep track of prayers and invocations
Celebrating Islamic holidays in a way that is not in accordance with the Quran and the Sunnah
Dangers of Bidah
There are a number of dangers associated with bidah. One danger is that it can lead to division and disunity among Muslims. When people follow different innovations, they will start to disagree with each other about what is right and wrong. This can lead to arguments, disputes, and even violence.
Another danger of bidah is that it can lead to people following false teachings and beliefs. When people follow new practices and beliefs that are not rooted in the Quran or the Sunnah, they are at risk of being misled. There are many false teachings and beliefs that have been invented over the centuries, and people who follow bidah are more likely to be led astray by these false teachings.
How to Avoid Bidah
The best way to avoid bidah is to stick to the Quran and the Sunnah. If you are unsure about whether or not a practice or belief is permissible, it is best to err on the side of caution and avoid it.
There are a few things that you can do to make sure that you are avoiding bidah:
Study the Quran and the Sunnah. The more you know about the Quran and the Sunnah, the better equipped you will be to identify and avoid bidah.
Ask a scholar. If you are unsure about whether or not a practice or belief is permissible, ask a qualified scholar. A scholar will be able to tell you whether or not the practice or belief is rooted in the Quran and the Sunnah.
Be careful about who you follow. Not everyone who claims to be a scholar is actually a scholar. Be careful about who you follow and make sure that the person you are following is credible and knowledgeable.
Conclusion
The Sunnah is a vital part of Islam. It provides Muslims with a direct link to the Prophet Muhammad and his teachings. It also provides insights into the Prophet's character and personality, and it helps Muslims to understand the Quran and its teachings.
Bidah is forbidden in Islam because it can lead to division and disunity among Muslims. It can also lead to people following false teachings and beliefs.
