Seems to me the GOP should have vetted its own candidate, if only to avoid its current or similar embarrassment. Edit.: It would appear the DCCC, or Democratic Congressional Candidate Committee was responsible for Santos' background check. Yes, they should be. But the issue is bigger than this. The social networks have to decide whether they're going to get into the business of moderation. For one, that opens up the floodgates of scrutiny over what they're moderating, why, whether there's a right and wrong answer at all, whether they're doing it in a fair and unbiased way, and how deep are they willing to go? If a school board committee member decides to run for their seat, does Meta need to fact-check their claim over having eaten oatmeal that morning? Clearly that's an intentionally silly example, but where _is_ the line? Now, consider that Meta's products are used world-wide. Do they fact-check ALL elections, or just US ones? What if they decide only to care about US elections? Or US and Canada? Or US, Canada, and Brazil? What meets the threshold of relevance? What does that say about elections in places they _don't_ fact-check? How does that affect the balance of power in those areas? How does that affect the balance of power globally? This isn't a simple problem, and the simplest answer may just be to opt out entirely, and take their finger off the scale. Even then, as Geddy sang in Freewill, "if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." The rather sudden introduction of tech has opened a Pandora's Box, and we're going to be faced with the repercussions of that for some time.
