As the November election draws near, Republicans and Democrats are treading a fine line between appealing to undecided voters and to the loyal party base. For Democrats, Black voters have historically been a bastion of support. But recent data warns against taking them for granted. A Pew Research Poll showed about half would prefer to replace both presidential candidates, hinting at their growing disaffection with the Democratic Party. Professor Leah Rigueur talks to Michel Martin about what’s behind it.

They are constantly being told immigrants are getting debit cards, apartments and help low wagers believe are owed to them. Grocery prices and rents are still too high due to corporate greed imo.

And those are the crumbs. So, black Americans are being told by one side (Trump) to accept fighting with migrants for the crumbs while we do nothing to address the systemic barriers that prevent many black Americans from entering the middle class. While also at the same time: we refuse to discuss honestly racial discrimination in home value appraisals, USAA (a credit union for military service members) has not been called before Congress to explain the racial disparity in their mortgage application approval rates, we roll back affirmative action and block broad based student debt relief, and we can’t even consider market based solutions to closing the racial wealth gap (like baby bonds). In other words, there is no consideration given to you as a black middle-class American. Instead, you’re told “Joe Biden is too old to understand what challenges you’re facing”….while his administration works to address student loan debt, medical debt on credit reports, fair home appraisals, wage growth, and the cost of prescription drugs…..ya know, the things that impact people’s credit score, their ability to get lending or sell what already have. One side is putting in the work, but you’re being told it’s all lip service. The other side does none of the work, actually impedes the work, and then ask you to help keep other black and brown people out because again….those crumbs like pre-paid debit cards, Obama phones, and 2 nights at the local seedy motel.

I find it ”problematic” that this discussion uncritically assumes throughout that black people *ought* to vote for Democrats. Supposedly, no black person could vote for Republicans because they favor Republican ideas or policies or because they oppose liberal or progressive ideas or policies. Nah, it’s because black men are inclined to “individualism” (read: “selfish”). And black women apparently just care too much about the black race to ever vote Republican, so I guess any black woman who votes Republican is a race traitor. This is blatant sexism. Oh, wait-I forgot women can’t be sexist.

Is it different from the system we currently have in place that targets every section of our lives from birth to death, donates weapons of war to cops so they can kick down our doors and build prisons to house us over every other demographic? This is the stuff that you guys that cape for the Dems constantly ignore, and this is only one issue. If I broke down the ways the Dems have proven they are no good for our community I would be writing a pretty long short story.

Project 2025 would not be possible without the 8 million or more migrants that the Democrats led by Biden/Harris selectively (skin tone) allowed in this country. She clearly stated that she "was not going to do anything "just" for Black people but they certainly did a lot "just" for migrants at Black peoples expense.

What are you talking about? Old people died, that is whay is changing things. It was always the older heads in the community that backed the Dems despite the constant attacks. Younger people have long been extremely skeptical of the Dems. Especially those of us who remember how openly racist the party was during the 80s and 90s.

Cancelling student debt helps middle class Blacks and hurts low income blacks because its inflationary. It burdens the poor with the debts of the upwardly mobile making inequality worse. This is why young Black voters are so frustrated. Food, housing, better wages is what matters most.

Well, vote Republican and see what you get! A lot of what you say also applies to low income whites and the retired. So don't stand on the pulpit and tout the numbers. I would say you are advocating the Republican Party as the one to vote for. See what you get and how you will come back and tout the same things you are saying about the Republicans. If a particular group wants a political party to do something for them, not voting for that party is not the way to do it. One must engage and work with the party, including during the non-election years.
