Living in Lyon for now 4 years : + Fantastic local food ("bouchons", cold cuts, cheeses ) + Beautiful city + OK Transports - Very hard to make new friends (people stick to their knowledge zone and are very ) - Prices are getting higher and higher, especially for renting or buying. - Very hard to find really good restaurants out of french food (in 4 years impossible to find a real or close to Japanese sushi for ex)

After living in France for almost 3 months i no longer need to read the subtitles ! I understood everything. This just shows that you really must immerse yourself fully in order to learn the language and that means living in the country !

As a beginner in French I struggle to keep up with the young native speakers. They speak so darn fast compared to their elders who speak very clearly and I therefore don’t have a problem understanding them.

If you want, you may slow down the speed of the video. Hover your mouse in the center of the playing video and click on the Settings icon, which resembles a gear. In the menu, scroll to find Playback speed and click it. RU-vid gives you eight options for playback speed. :)

Evidently, the whole point of this series is to hear natives in all their natural speed and glory (which entails all kinds of contractions like "ado" for "adolecent" or "ya pas soucis" for "il y a pas de soucis)." The value of this series is to accustom your brain to that. There are plenty of other series where speaking is much slower and the use of shortcuts in even eliminated. I find those quite valuable for accumulating vocabulary and expressions. In short, there are different series out there for different needs.

Thank you for creating these fun yet educational videos. I was looking for audio-visual material where I can see for myself what everyday expressions real French people use instead of textbook stuff. I noticed a huge difference between how Francophones pronounce or leave out some words whereas textbooks pronounce every word in at a slower pace. It is quite difficult to catch all the liasons, accents and left-out words but because there are subs below it is immensely helpful for my listening comprehension. Keep up the good work! :-)

@Palm20dd
@Palm20dd 9 лет назад
TheReverses78 Well the French seem to omit 'de' a lot. They also tend to shorten a lot of sounds like 'Je suis" to "Chuis" or "Il y a" -to "Ya" These are some things that foreigners, including myself, find confusing

Great video, Tony. Now, we can hear another accents of France. I see the Lyon accent is very different than the Parisian one. I don't know if I'm wrong, but I have perceived that the Lyonnais people pronounce words such as "niveau" et "eau" with an /o/ very open, almost as [ɔ]: kind of like [ni'vɔ], ['ɔ]. I have also perceived that infinitives ending in "-er", /e/ isn't so closed. It's very curious how the tattoer pronounced "ouvrir"; it sounds to me like [ɔ'vʁɛʁ]. The young man pronounced "oui", which sounds to me like ['wɛ]. Generally, it seems that unlike Standard French, they pronounce several vowels with more opening.

Avoir la bougeotte signifie qu'on veut toujours bouger autre part, aller dans un pays, qu'on ne souhaite pas rester au même endroit trop longtemps. En général ce sont les gens très actifs voire hyperactifs qui ont le bougeotte.

c'est "en tout cas" with a T in french (en tout cas, c'est la règle de grammaire)... that's mean "quoi qu'il en soiT", but "en tous cas" stay rarely ok and have an other meaning : in any case. just word by word.
