Would you consider doing a video demonstrating The Motown Drum Sound or the James Brown early 60s drum sounds?! I love Old school Jazz drumming but it's a little intimidating to me but thanks for making it fun !

I really dig the second cymbal setup. The K ride is distinct and the broad array of textures allows for expanded expression.

The most majority of big band drummers nowadays actually are using match grip now… this comment isn’t meant to be correcting or degrading but an observation that I myself, a match grip user, also find surprising

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for a video like this. Wait, actually, I can: like FOREVER. Your channel deserves to big so much bigger - all of you involved in this channel: keep up the good work, we really appreciate it. Also, the drummer in this video plays perfectly. I like your style. My favorite configuration would be 24 - 13 - 16 drums and 14, 18, 8, 22, 20 for big band. Cheers and stay safe everyone! :)

I started at 26 with an electronic kit and advanced from there to an acoustic kit. Played everyday for about 9 months and can hold my own on drums quite well now. Point is, it's never too late. Once you get over the one-two month hump it feels like breathing

I've actually only taught myself to tune my toms and snare this way, but always end up having to use dampening rings to get a deeper tone since I'm going for a heavier, rock sound.

Wonderful! After watching some of your other brilliant modern rock drum covers, I was going to give you a challenge to recreate some older Jazz/Swing/Big Band covers. Luckily I scrolled down through your list and saw that you already created this one 2 years ago, lol. Now I’m truly impressed! So difficult for many modern Rock and Progressive drummers to cross over into the different feel and finesse of Jazz, but you did a good job here. Even the professor, one of my favorite drummers Neil Peart, tried his hand at Jazz for a while. And in my opinion, although he of course could technically play it correctly, he somewhat lacked the swing, subtle relaxed touch, and timing of an experienced Jazz drummer such as Joe Morello, and vice versa. No way Joe could play Tom Sawyer, heh.

For me, nothing under a 24” kick for big band. Mainly because many of the drummers were unmic’d back then and needed the “boom” to cut through a bit. Bigger toms and cymbals rounded out the need. Great video!!

I [icked up a DW Classics Buddy Tribute kit a few years back. Never had a 24 Bass Drum before and fell in love with it. 24 x 14 on my other kit too. For this Genre I like 24-13-16 with a Solid Shell snare. Die cast hoops all the way and if room I use a 2nd Floor although that's not really needed. Great Presentation here by the way

Note: Baby Dods along with a representative from Ludwig/WFL were instrumental in inventing the “Charleston” cymbals/ hi-hats. This happened during Dods river boat band days. Two 12in cymbals were used on a very primitive stand. It’s said Dods didn’t like the idea, and only used the “Charleston” cymbals for a short time. I’d like to know what information you have on the invention/inventor of the kick drum pedal. Great channel guys! I’m really enjoying the videos you do on trying to match a popular drummers unique sound. 🥁👍🏼
@shiningarmor2838

The kind of kick pedal that we all play today was invented by Ludwig in 1909. Some earlier designs exist, but they were unwieldy and not good at playing fast tempos.
@BobbyJetty1502
@BobbyJetty1502 2 года назад
@@shiningarmor2838 Yeah no s*** they weren't good at playing at fast tempos because the kind of music playing back then was over 90 beats per minute and any pedal they tried to make back then would break good luck to you and best in all your endeavors

I would argue the set up off the Bass drum on the 2nd kit….. Drummer’s like Ronnie Verrell had a pillow in the bottom on the drum and had it loose tuned, and a hard beater. This gave more of a smack for when the band needed more poke from the drum sound. I realise this video is more intended for early big band sound but everyone needs to remember a big band Bass drum needs Some wallop about it.
