Big Bend National Park - Old Ore Road

IMHO this is the best and most fun off-road road in Big Bend. You definitely need a high clearance 4WD vehicle. If you do this run in a regular car you will break something expensive, get stuck, and have an enormous towing charge to get hauled out. I did the run in 4-LO with disconnected swaybar (although neither is truly necessary).
A modicum of off roading experience and skills will definitely help but, if you're a total n00b, you'll pick up new and valuable skills and possibly even survive ;) N00bs will find a few spots pretty scary looking. Don't panic, take your time, go nice and slow (and very smoothly) and you'll do just fine. If you have at least some experience, you'll find it pretty easy but still quite interesting and a lot of fun.
The trail is 2-way so you need to be comfortable backing uphill around turns in case you meet someone going the other way. It is pretty unlikely you'll meet someone but, if you do, it is a guarantee that you'll be going down a steep hill in a turn. Make sure you have the skills to back up twisty hills.
You must have a full size spare and all that goes with it as there are a lot of very sharp rocks just itching to rip through your sidewalls. Watch your wheel placement.
The trail is accessed via Dagger Flat Auto Trail, is about 24 miles or so in length, and it will take between 3 and 4 hours to run. Plan on 4 hours as there is a lot of sightseeing and beautiful scenery. Bring food and drinks. I think the run is a little easier going south. You will end up near the Boquillas Canyon area. Be sure to do the (very easy) Boquillas Canyon hike after your run.
I like this run best in the morning, in the summer this area will be extremely hot so go at daybreak then. We briefly saw 116 degrees at the south end last Labor Day weekend.
I shot this with a GoPro Hero2 camera mounted on the driver's side of a 2012 Rubicon. The camera mounts are affixed permanently to the forward-most edge of the roof and the leading edge of the front bumper next to the winch. The GoPro just clips in and out of the mounts. The GoPro was set to 1080p 30fps wide. Shooting really wide helps to mitigate the effects of rolling shutter on rough road surfaces. The GoPro doesn't shoot stabilized video so I did the image stabilization in AfterEffects. You can see some stabilization artifacts, but I don't think they hurt the viewing experience too much. The shots from the bumper suffer a lot more from rough roads so I mostly use shots from the roof.
You can see my photographs from the trip at photography.ric...

Made that trip in a '56 Willys Wagon. Busted a center leaf spring bolt. No steering control because the tie rod ends were shot. Loved every minute of it.

Ethan - that vehicle is a Mercedes Benz MB 911 Rundhauber. It was really neat to see one in person.

This is terrific footage, thanks! One of my favorite places is the Ernst Tinaja canyon. I've never made the full run on this road before, but when I get my Jeep this year, it's now at the top of my list! Cheers, dc.

Great Video. We just came back from there, my pardner and I traveling from El Paso back to MO. A guy in the gift shop @ Study Butte/Terlingua said we should try the Old Ore Trail since we were in a 4x4 pickup (a 1997 Ford F-150 4x4 but with road tread tires).. Well we did great going from south to North until we got to the wash just north of Telephone Trail, where we just didn't have enough tread to get up the hill. After several different approaches, we turned back. But we also remembered the big hill about 5 miles North of the south end of the trail, but made it up and back. I would suggest if you attempt this, you need pretty rough tread tires :) But it was an awesome drive...

We misjudged our time elsewhere in the park and had to drive this road (up to McKinney Springs campground) in the DARK! Good thing we'd driven it a few times on the trip and could remember where some of the gnarly spots were...

Love this vid! Big Bend is my favorite place. Although I don't think I could take my Toyota Corolla down Old Ore Road. :P

Richard, great video. I'm planning a trip to Big Bend, hoping to use a Land Cruiser, this gives me confidence that it can handle it and a great incentive to see it first hand! Thanks for the great work!

We have been to the Ernst Tinaja from the south end 7 years in a row now, and thought that was rough, someday we will make the whole trip.

Nice video. I don't have a HC vehicle but will definitely consider a guided tour out that when I head out to BBNP in the next couple of months.

Yes, I think that the southern half of Old Ore Rd is the most scenic in an extremely rugged desert sort of way.

Good morning David, I'm not sure that I'd take your Mountaineer on Old Ore Rd. Depending on conditions, you will likely not have enough ground clearance for some of the washes and holes between Ernst Basin and Camp de Leon. You'd really have a bad day if you misjudge an approach angle and if you're running street tires you stand a decent chance of tire damage as there are lots of really sharp rocks. Desert pinstriping is a possibility as well.

If your Mountaineer is stock with street tires, I'd stick to Dagger Flat Auto Trail, Old Maverick Rd, Paint Gap, Grapevine Hills. I think anything else is just asking for potential problems, and it isn't like you'll be able to call a tow truck. Santa ELena Canyon is at the south end of Old Maverick Rd and is a fabulous hike. Bring passports and go over to Mexico at Boquillas Canyon as the crossing is now open again. It is 100% safe to do this and well worth it.

Richard: Just checked out your photo page...Outstanding Views of Big Bend.....we were there in March 2016 and I got some decent shots of the area, including "The Window" at Sun Down....mind if I ask the type program and camera you used in your shots? We are taking out Dual Sports back down that way in late October 2017...camping at the Rio Grande Village, going down Old Ore Rd again, along with the River Road and others and heading into Terlingua for the annual Chili Cook Off...Great Place, nice scenery, and seldom overcrowded.

Hi Pat - yeah, Big Bend is just a fabulous place. I especially like it in the summer when only crazy people would dare go ;) Old Ore Rd is my favorite trail there and also where I experienced the highest temperature and humidity combination in my life - just amazingly unpleasant but so worth the experience. Late October should be perfect for you. Most of those shots were taken with a Nikon D2x and the post work was done in Photoshop and the AlienSkin Exposure plugin.

Thanks Richard...last March was great riding weather...mostly 60s/70s a bit cool for early/mid March but great for what we were there for. Late October after the rainy season should be great for the desert green...once again, great photos....thanks!PS~ I turn 68 this month, but still riding and in fairly good shape for an old fart...{coming from officiating/umpire about 200 High School and College Sporting events a year} ... I may give BB a try in the Summer, but will sure to be well prepared :)

Thank you for posting this video. I must ask. My wife and I are planning a trip to Big Bend here before too long. We have and AWL Mercury Mountaineer. One of the reasons we are going is to take some of the back roads. Where I do appreciate you posting this video, I'm sure that being there is better. Having said that. Is there any part of Old Ore Road that you think our Mountaineer would have problems handling?

RU-vid won't let me post the link to the map here :( but you can download it from the Big Bend NPS website under Plan Your Visit. That map contains off the offroad trails and descriptions (no topo info though).

Be advised that the inland CBP checkpoint just south of Marathon on 385 is an unpleasant experience. They tend to be very aggressive, unfriendly, and you will feel like a suspected drug smuggler. The CBP checkpoint on 118 just south of Marathon is a (somewhat) better experience. In any case, you *will* have a thorough drug dog going-over so keep that in mind. If you've not from the borderland, you should know that the CBP folks have no sense of humor and can be worse than the TSA at the airport.

About 17 miles, north end has some sand....otherwise great for Dual Sport Motorcycles and high clearance 4 x 4s...
