That transition was unbelievable.. and unbelievable to see a big boy on what looks like O-31 curves. I'm so used to seeing O-72 for big boys.

Fun layout, and great looking flats. Particularly enjoyed the magical transition at 0:56! In goes a Commodore, out comes a Big Boy! Well done.

Yup, that was a great job on that.

The track plan is great. I love the way you can change directions so easily. The incline is also great.

That's a great track plan for a small space like that! You've given me a great thought for my layout! Thank you!

You got me. I didn't notice the slight of hand. I literally had to rewind a bit and see what I missed and then I noticed the transition. I was wondering, "Wasn't that a different train?" Nice, I don't even have a layout yet. Got plenty of trains, no layout.

I like the layout! Great idea for a 4 x 8 platform!

oh WOW. At first glance it looks great.. lots of interesting track.. elevated sections, cross overs! The rocks are fantastic.. The general look and feel is very pleasing. Then we see how it runs.. with the trains going through each area, up and down the inclines.. Looks like a lot of fun throwing those switches. Thats a whole game in itself. And then theres the magic mountain that transforms a CV into a Big Boy. Very nice work D. JP .

@stlouiebloos The inside figure 8 is standard O-27 fare with a Marx crossover; the inside curve up front is half O-27 and half Marx O-34; the outside curve up front is half Marx O-34 and half O-42; the back curve is all Marx O-34. The elevated straights are made up of (from left to right) a 35" and 2 x 8.75", a 35" and an 8.75", and a 35" and a 5". The switches are a mix of Marx and Lionel, but the older kind that can run both Marx "Fat wheel" and Lionel engines.

A very nice layout and video. I also have plans to incorporate a figure-8 and inclines into my expanded layout plan, but, considering my space limitations, will probably stick with HO scale.

Holy Crap! I had no idea that a "BIG BOY" can operate on a 4 x 8' layout and hit those curves flawlessly. Impressive!
@DarrellJMartin
@DarrellJMartin 6 лет назад
It's a K-line which is semi-scaled, and technically it's only supposed to run on 0-31 curves, but in this layout as long as I stayed out of the figure-8 it ran fine, even though some of the curves had a mix of 0-27 and larger diameters. If you look carefully, you can see the locomotive wobble a bit on the down-front curve, just before going into the switch. It's actually off the track, and the switch nudges it back on.

The Big Boy is a K-line, which is smaller and articulated differently than the Lionel, allowing it to make O-31 inch curves. However, it will do O-27, like the lower level pass behind the mountain, which is the back half of the figure 8. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of the wheels, it doesn't like the O-27 switches, nor will it make it across the Marx brand cross-over, so no, I don't make it navigate the inner loop.

I think Darrel's Christmas layout tops this. It's just plane simple and sweet.

After making the above layout in 2010, I joined a group with a modular layout that ran at local (Southern Ontario) train shows. It was nice, but it didn't have the same level of interest that a good table-top layout has. I was with them from Jan 2012 til June 2013. Then, my buddy from that group, John, and I created our own layout, GT3, which is based on 027 profile track and is closer to the sort of layout you see in this video, only with 6-7 trains instead of just one. We have been operating since Jan 2014. If you like this layout, go to our channel and see what we've done with a mixture of small and large track configurations.

I see some Marx 34" diameter pieces for the upper level, combined with 42" curves?
@gt3trains
@gt3trains 6 месяцев назад
Yep, you are correct. The inside figure 8 is standard Lionel O-27 fare with a Marx crossover. Down front, the inside curve is made up of three O-27 and one Marx O-34; the outside curve is half Marx O-34 and half Lionel O-42. Up in the back, the curve is all Marx O-34.

Very nicely done Darrell 😀 Somehow didn't think the Big Boy would see the business end of those reversing loops 🚂 What are your curve radii? (radiuses?)
@DJMgoober
@DJMgoober 3 года назад
O gauge is measured in diameter, so the "O" designation is used. The inside figure 8 is standard O-27 fare with a Marx crossover. Down front, the inside curve is made up of three O-27 and one Marx O-34; the outside curve is half Marx O-34 and half O-42. Up in the back, the curve is all Marx O-34. The k-line Big Boy is rated for O-31, but I found it could manage a bit of O-27, but just barely. It tends to derail occasionally. You can see more of the Big Boy running on my larger layout here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N0SpezyvydY.html

Wonderful I did not know that a locomotive with the size of the BIG BOY Lionel, could run curves with the diameter equal to that of his ramp Diameter O31 I was also surprised to see that the BIG BOY passes through the gauge O switch without presenting problems. You can make a locomotive BIG BOY move in the inner loop? I want a locomotive like that but, I do know if my layout tolerate this Sorry my English but I am from Brazil and I'm use the google translation for this Beautiful Layout

Late to the party but that K-Line Big Boy is double articulated which allows it to run on 027 track. The real thing was only single articulated of course.

It was so long ago... I think I used Marx switches while the Commodore was running, then swapped them out for early Lionel ones to run the Big Boy. You can see them transition out at 1:02.

Does any one know how I can get a materials list for this layout
@DarrellJMartin
@DarrellJMartin 5 лет назад
Thomas, Take a look at the comment I left below, 8 years ago, which describes the track diameters used as well as the straights. Everything is O-27 profile track, albeit in different diameters. I'm also in the process of updating my club's website which, once completed, will have a space for layout drawings including this one. I'll post a note to this thread when that's ready.

wow what big boy is this
@DarrellJMartin
@DarrellJMartin 5 лет назад
It's a K-line, made in 1993 I think, it's semi-scale, so it's anywhere from 1/58 to 1/62 instead of 1/48, double-articulated so it can take these tighter turns.
