I wanted a really compact chorus, so I got myself a JC-120. It has a built in chorus effect, so a chorus pedal will not take any space.

As much as I like the sound of the comet chorus, I’ve had the 3 series chorus for almost a year and I can’t see myself ever replacing it on my board. I primarily play Lofi/bedroom pop and the 3 series gets me the exact sounds I need on either the chorus or vibrato modes.

Man, that JHS really does scream 80's and I love it, but that Comet covers so much ground, especially w/ the faux tremolo effect! I love me some chorus. I don't need another chorus pedal, but I might have to get at least one of these...

I love JHS and the 3 Series, but if I had to pick just 1 of these, it’s the Comet. That Leslie sound with the light chorus warble is just delightful. I really like this shootout series you’re doing, Ryan. Keep going with it, will you?

Aside from the legendary status your 2 Princeton rig has acquired, I appreciate it because I feel like a lot of us play Fender-style amps because they're (a) affordable and (b) pretty ubiquitous. Makes me listen to your demos knowing that I am not just hearing an incredible amp and being deceived. Also, that Maestro chorus is surprisingly versatile (almost two pedals in one) and pleasing.

The Orbit on the Maestro is super sick. I love it. Also even though I’m partial to JHS, I love the tweakiness of the Hammertone. Especially since I’m not a huge fan of chorus, and just want it to be super light and dreamy. If Josh took the Orbit thing and stufk it into a Hammertone thing, I’d get it.

The Maestro Comet Chorus reminds me of the vibrato on my 60s Magnatone amp. Sounds great, and very different from your typical chorus pedal. You'd probably want a second pedal to cover 80s tunes though.

@paulj0557tonehead
@paulj0557tonehead Год назад
Ryan, it is a sweet tremolo, but it's more of a pulsed ramped up quick fade amplitude modulation (AM) than a rotary's smooth to and fro sound. Also has a bit more frequency modulation (FM) than a rotary. A Hammond organ uses a mechanical Vibrato Scanner, with Chorus just being half vibrato/ half dry. Just like on a pedal, which you expressed at 17:54 . My favorite chorus is the light blue DOD FX-60 from 1982. Bought new, still works great.

Ryan, I thought of you when I discovered this album the other day- *Skip Battin - Skip (1972) Full Album - RU-vid* . So first check out the Byrd's 9min video- *The Byrds - Eight Miles High - 9/23/1970 - Fillmore East (Official)* , That's Skip Battin playing a great bass solo with drummer Gene Parsons. It's basically The Byrds, as they all played on it. It was actually Clarence White's last playing on record, as it was recorded in Dec. '72. Clarence's playing was the best! He invented the B-Bender. I also noticed that Skip Battin is from Gallipolis, Ohio. Where I live now.
@blairmichaelhogan4502
@blairmichaelhogan4502 Год назад
Interesting. That comet sounds absolutely great but the Rotary setting definitely sounds like just a tremolo and the Chorus setting is more of a true vibrato with no dry signal mixed in like a typical chorus would have.
@allyourbasearebelongtous2191
I'm super surprised with this one. The Maestro and the Fender one are my favorite. Love JHS don't get me wrong. But with the Fender you can do a Tri-Chorus and with the Maestro you can do that Orbit mode. Very nice.
@allanflippin2453
@allanflippin2453 Год назад
There is another cool use for chorus with a multi-amp rig. Try a stereo chorus, connecting the two outputs to two separate amps. The effect is less obvious split that way, but it adds a bit of "air" in the mix of amp sounds. My favorite thing with two amps is to have one clean and the other one dirty. Rock on! :)

I have a Maestro chorus, the thing that no one ever points out in these reviews is that if the mix knob goes above noon it gets way louder, and that it significantly darkens your tone. Below noon it has a volume drop unless its 100% dry then it's neutral.

I don't think that tuning stability being a problem was a cause for chorus in the 80s, but I do think that chorus did a great job of 'sweetening' music on the radio when it was hard to get the signal tuned in just right, sort of like how old Motown recordings were made to be heard on AM radios in cars

I liked the Maestro best, but is it even a chorus if you can't make it sound out of tune? Not sure what I'd call that one. The JHS is the most chorus-y, and the Fender is just bizarre. Nice to have so many options and extremes on the pots, but how much of it is usable for anything beyond scaring critters within earshot?
@MintStiles
@MintStiles Год назад
Some of the biggest problems with choruses? Chorii? Is volume after you combine the dry and the vibrato. Having a volume to bring the signal back up is a very clever and useful feature. I think the TC button thingy and MXR analog chorus are actually excellent. Same with the boss chorus ensemble (which wasn't the cheapest anymore last I checked).

Does the 3 series chorus have a volume drop going from chorus to vibrato? The emperor has it and it's really annoying to live with
@pickyyeeter
@pickyyeeter Год назад
Chorus is usually vibrato mixed with dry signal, so most chorus/vibrato pedals cut the dry signal to get vibrato. Since you're cutting out half of the signal, it tends to be quieter Doesn't make it less annoying, but it's at least understandable

Three amps, three chorus units? Surely has to be called Ry-O-Sound™️? On the subject of the 80's chorus sound, probably on of the most prolific chorus sounds was actually added in post production using the original Eventide Harmoniser units as it had a really lush and wide chorus sound. My guess would be that one artist used it on a record and every other artist heard it and said 'I want that sound!".
@nickolasecker9596

The maestro chorus is really impressive. Best pedal from that line, which was ultimately a disappointment as no classic maestro pedals were revived save for the fuzz which was kind of an homage more than a reissue. Maestro stuff was cutting edge back in the day, the vanilla nature of this series might just kill the name off. I wish they’d have tried more unique approaches like the comet chorus.
@LeviBulger
@LeviBulger Год назад
You have it backwards. Chorus effects will emphasize a bad tuning. They're already taking one of the signals down out of pitch. If you're off pitch fo begin with,it doesn't correct it. It will just take the dissonance of two out of pitch notes and apply even more pitch shifting to it.

I can be such an idiot. Having frequencies ghost out on me due to my deafness I decided to liquidate my guitar collection. My daughter agreed to buy my 35th Anniversary PRS SE Custom 24 w/Black Gold Wrap finish on it. A wonderful, and beautiful guitar. It’s setup like Paul’s Guitar with the toggles to split the coils on the humbuckers. So far so good right? A couple of weeks ago I bought a Epi Custom Shop Limited Edition Les Paul Special I in worn black w/P90’s in it. I was P90 curious, and found out that I love P90’s. The other day I saw another Epi Limited Edition Les Paul Special that has a P90 in the neck, and a humbucker in the bridge. Being the idiot I am, I bought it. I sure do hope that my dude at Beltone can fix it so I can start hearing certain frequencies again. I won’t have to sell off my collection of PRS guitars, and the nice collection of nice Epi LP’s I have including the ‘59 Epi/Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Standard which roars with those original ‘59 specs, and wiring. I’d put it up against any Gibson in a blind test. But hey, new guitar arrives Tuesday so it ain’t all doom and gloom…
