Every year, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) fishery biologists set up a spawn-take operation for brown trout at North Delaney Butte Lake near Walden, CO. Biologists capture brown trout and collect more than a million eggs, which are shipped to CPW hatcheries. Once hatched and raised, the brown trout are restocked in waters throughout the state. North Delaney is the primary source of brown trout eggs in Colorado. Although they are non-native, brown trout are some of the most popular fish among anglers.

Why not just let them spawn naturally in the lake?

I always hear that browns are more difficult to catch than rainbows, but i catch way more browns. How is one type harder to catch and why do I catch more of the "harder" to catch fish? I fish big Thompson and Poudre regularly.

So the obvious question is why don't we let the me natural process of fertilization occur free of human intervention?

Mark, Most of Colorado's reservoirs do not have the habitat and water conditions (inlets) necessary for natural reproduction. And, of those species that are able to reproduce naturally, recruitment (the number of juvenile fish that actually survive to be added to a population) is too low to support recreational angling. Without operations like these and ongoing stocking, most of Colorado's waters could not support self-sustaining populations of fish -- N. Delaney included. Sadly,it wouldn't happen, loss of spawning grounds and other factors. If they did successfully spawn, there certainly wouldn't be a viable fishery. We outnumber our prey, not to mention massive egg loss through natural processes.
