They had it all. What rock is all about. Each member is a huge talent. Stuart was a one of a kind force of nature. Stuart was my hero and changed my life. I never forgot this band and never will. Incredible show! Just incredible
Well, so I'm over 50 now, and this holds up as well for me as anything from that time or before. If I had the ability to climb into a time machine I would land in the Barrowlands that night and have the time of my life. There are certain things that make the consummate show: the setlist, the energy of the band, the energy of the crowd, and the sound. There's few concerts you can find on RU-vid that can top this one for a combo of all four. I wish I could have seen this band live before we lost Stuart, because they had many, many more great songs to add to this 14 song setlist. RIP Stuart and RIP Big Country.
I was there with my brother-in-law from Paisley as he surprised me with the tickets. I was 18 at the time so ended up wasted, pucked up everywhere but the bits I do remember where absolutely incredible.
@@stewscott9842 What a waste Scot! You must look back and really regret being wasted, over and over again. Sadly, same problem recurs now over.. and over..and over..and over again - people need to get wasted to have a 'good time'.
Amen brother. Those days sadly will never come back! Such great song writing, able and super talented musicians, and all their energy goes into their concert - and the fans respond in return. And not a laptop in sight! Epic!
Absolutely timeless and not the same without Stuart. I was 14 when I watched this live on TV as the New Year came in. I named my first son Stuart in 2000. Wonderful music that was way ahead of its time. Fantastic, underrated band, that should've remained as big as the likes of U2 etc.
Big Counry is one of the best bands of all time, it's criminal that they aren't more popular/recognised. RIP Stuart, you wonderful magical man - you were the heart and soul of this group and you will live on as long as I draw breath.
Stuart Adamson. Boy could that boy play the guitar. I know a genius when i see one, and he is one. Surely one of the best live gigs of all time. I wasnt there. Its my generation, I would have been 24. Saw The Clash live 27 times, love of my life, still. But if there is one concert I would have begged to be at, this is the one. Awesome doesnt even come close to describing that atmosphere - and not a mobile phone in sight eh...
Big Country were supposed to tour Australia back in 84. I was 15 and managed to score front row seats. They cancelled and it broke my heart. I LOVED this group and always will. Stuart - an unsung hero and a GOD on the guitar! RIP.
@@raindrops21_9 the reason I think they cancelled was they were totally beat with touring but should have honoured the gigs at a later date. Pity about management. Did u see them when they eventually came out
I was an American boy at the age of 5 bought The Crossing with my birthday money. The album from start to finish was a masterpiece. It started a very large music collection over 40 years later. BC should’ve been the biggest band in the world, but such is life. Thanks for posting this concert. This was truly magical.
One of the greatest captured live performances of all time. I will never ever forget this show. In my entire 55 years on this planet, I have committed theft only a single time. I was 14 years old and this performance had just debuted on MTV (or maybe USA Night Flight), and I had no money. I'm not proud of what I did, and never will be. But DAMN IT... if a young guy was willing to do something wrong just once, stealing the debut BC album from Kmart in 1984 was worth it!!! And RIP forever Stewart!!!
if there's ever been a concert with as much passion, raw energy, audience appreciation and musical brilliance as this, eye want to hear about it. this is where i'm going once i get into the time machine. RIP Stuart; long life and success to the rest of the band. stay alive.
I was at this show. At the front. Travelled from Belfast and it was well worth it. Never forget coming out elated from the intense heat to the freezing cold that night.
I was but a bun in the oven myself. I'd have liked to have seen them with Stu but alas, it was nay to be. :( What a talent all the same, and what a show!
A coworker passed this CD on to me about 20, 25 years ago. I was a fan of their hit U.S. song when it came out, of course, but never really go to delve into their full works. I put this CD on and experienced that rare moment of instant and total captivation. Stuart Adamson deserved so much better.
I happened to run across this video as a rental in early 84, I think it was. OMG, it was amazing! I’d already had the album, and this just put the cream on top of it! There will never be another band like this, we are so lucky to have found BC out of the group of bands that came out in the early 80s. This music stands the test of time and is just as fresh as the day you first heard it. So sadly underrated here in the States, but we who found BC found precious gold that we will never let go!
Not many groups can throw us back to the past, but Big Country does. Every time I see this or play their music (which is often), I feel a slight melancholy at the loss of a true great; and a time of great music. However, the music still brings joy. RIP Stuart and thanks to RU-vid and people posting these classics he and Big Country will not be forgotten.
Brilliant live band , up there with the best. I was lucky enough to see big county about 4 times in the 80s at Newcastle city hall , they would always rock the place ! Stuart’s a such a miss , was gutted when I heard of his passing , a true music legend awesome musician on vocals and guitar. Loved his other band the skids aswell. RIP Stuart. Gone but never forgotten, your music will stay with me forever, when my time comes, I want chance as my song , it’s just beautiful and a powerful song and is my favourite.
Excuse my language, but F_ _ _ _ _G unbelievable concert, etched in my brain forever, gutted when skids departed, but boy, did Stuart Adamson not disappoint us, R.I.P Stuart Adamson, sorely missed......
This concert was turned into the 'Live on the King Biscuit Flour Hour' release with subsequent DVD live. Not sure they ever played to more appreciative fans . It's only about 60 KMs from Dunfermline down M876/M80 so really they were more or less home. Barrowlands is still there. When they played and the crowd jumped up and down in time to the music the wooden floor would flex like a huge wooden trampoline especially out in the middle a little away from the stage. So much fun, so alive, sadly so long ago. Feels like yesterday.
Been on a Big Country kick lately, and I never realized until recently how much Tony is part of the unique guitar sound. Have never heard bass like that.
Rest In Peace Stuart Adamson! April 11, 1958-December 16, 2001. It was 16 years ago today that Stuart died. I place him as my 5th favorite singer songwriter of all time right behind Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, and Joan Baez! I think that the lyric All the secret wounds that bleed take me further from my need to the song everything I need are one of the best lines of any song ever written by any musical artist ever. I believe his best songs are Just a Shadow, Ships, Your Spirit to Me, Chance, Seven Waves, Winter Sky, You Want Me To Go, and Somebody Else. Of course there are so many more that others would choose. I am so sad to see the wat his life ended as so many others have also thought too! He will never be forgotten, I believe! He was agreat talent. I hope that he believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior for Eternal Life!
I'm a Canadian and also a 30 plus year drummer ,absolutely love big country . one of the most unique sounding bands ever. if they had the sound technology they do now could you imagine what this band would sound like wow .Rest in peace Stuart.
I am a Canadian 35 year drummer, (started at 15) been in many bands , done some good live shows, we are on youtube STIFF KITTY from 1988.. we played PUNK AND bit of hard rock stuff.. I was a METALLICA fan and then got heavy into thrash and this is natural as I started with Iron maiden b4 I became PUNKER , SAW MAIDEN IN 1987 in Toronto
Awesome concert, they were so underrated, it makes me sick, talented, beautiful songs, great structure, what else could you ask for in a band, just all around amazing and just epic

No flashing lights or fancy strobe lights. Thank goodness cell phones didn't exist - only devoted fans enjoying the music. I've seen and attended many great concerts of legendary acts (Bruce Springsteen, U2, Queen, The Police, Paul McCartney & Wings, Radiohead, etc.) ... I could go on & on. It's a shame I never saw *Big Country* live when I had a chance. So glad this concert was recorded ... it shows what a fantastic and energetic band *BC* truly was.
Whenever I start listening to my big country albums I always end up here. fucking greatness, new years eve live barrowlands glasgow. their defining moment, in my opinion. if only i had been there.
yep me too! i recorderd on vhs tape and watched it over and over until my older brother recorded over it and i was pissed! but became an instant fan for life!
OMG! So THIS is the concert I've been searching for. My mom & I were watching that night too. She even recorded it on the VCR but unfortunately I wore the tape out. I think the whole house was shaking that night from all our stomping & screaming to the music. lol. And you can bet, there was a lot of crying too. Will never forget that night or Stuart. Miss him & his voice forever.
I remember being surprised when getting The Crossing, because it was so un-80s. Just a no frills, 70s style players band with serious, folky lyrical content. Timeless and genuine.
1. 1,000 Stars (0:47) 2. Angle Park (4:57) 3. Close Action (9:36) 4. Lost Patrol (13:50) 5. Wonderland (18:59) 6. The Storm (23:16) 7. Scottish Pipers (Auld Lang Syne) (28:26) 8. Porrohman (32:06) 9. Chance (40:30) 10. Inwards (45:52) 11. Fields of Fire (51:46) 12. Harvest Home (59:10) 13. Tracks of My Tears (1:04:02) 14. In a Big Country (1:07:16)
I know this is ages later, but the tunes the band played were Highland Laddie, Will Ye No Come Back Again, and another tune I'm familiar with but as a drummer I just follow the lead. LOL. I'll think of it eventually.
2024. Still hard to believe it's been 41 years since The Crossing made its Debut. BC were Pure Bliss! I wasn't at this show but I got their Barrowlands Shirt to commemorate it at the time.
I can't even imagine being at this show. It already sounds fucking amazing as a pretty shitty youtube upload.... Barrowlands is the absolute greatest venue. I finally got there when I saw Danzig in August, 2018. I moved back to Glasgow (from New York State) to write a master's thesis for my course in book history that I studied in Edinburgh the year before. It ended up being a perfect summer--at the end of truly fucking beautiful year. The whole place looks totally untouched inside. Some of the walls are partly covered in strips of white vinyl covering. It's probably just some ugly utilitarian thing to keep the walls being kicked in and covered in beer. It does this well (no holes from either boot or fist, the beer in little puddle on the floors...). But, what it also does (well), is keep a memory for a piece of Glasgow. Every once-white patch of wall is stained by what all the years of cigarette smoke and life of the city leave behind. Most of those cigarettes were smoked on nights like this, full of noise and beauty. That's pretty cool.
I saw them 3 times - twice at the Hollywood Palladium (83-84-85 ???) and once at a small club in Fresno CA (CA 1990-1994 ???) Probably as much as anyone in Southern CA saw them. The music never ages; it is always fresh. Stuart - Stay Alive!
I got to see them 40 years ago tomorrow in Indianapolis and it was a great show. Loved their 3D stage with the mountains in back, a lake, castle and trees. Really good lighting effects. The band was on fire and full of energy. I went home feeling great, in spite of snow storm.
Ive said it before and I'll say it again. One of the most underrated bands in music history, to this day I'm pissed off they weren't on the main Live Aid line up. Forever thankful my Dad raised me on Stuart Adamson's genius 👌👌👌
Has there ever been a better confluence of start-to-finish musical excellence, concert performance, and audience energy? Not many if any would be my guess. Scotland rocks!
I saw them at the Edinburgh Playhouse on that tour. Place absolutely rocked and the theatre owners were concerned about the circle because it was moving
Got brought up with big country, but boy do I wish I was alive when they were first on the scene! Glad people post videos like this, they are great to watch, so jealous I couldn't experience times like these lol. Music has changed now a days and it's just pish lol!
When people play the "What concerts do you wish you could go back in time to see" game, this Big Country show is definitely in my top 3 (along with Bob Marley at Harvard Stadium 1979 and the Grateful Dead at Cornell in 1977 (cliche I know, but that Dew!)).
I saw them in Australia last month ... didn't know what to expect really, but I laughed, cried, sang along and clapped until my hands were numb. They were amazing.
What an event. It's hard to define that passion that wells up in one's breast when you are presented with something that defies all you've been taught, and makes you feel a part of something mighty and meaningful, that's not war but peace, wonderful strong overwhelming peace that you want to fight for, but it's not about fighting...*that* I believe was Stuart's message, that we are strong who want to be one people, one race, one humanity, and all we must do is insist that UNITY be our path.
Seen this live on telly, hogmanay 1983 ,BBC ? not sure ,anyway this concert was broadcast after a Nik Kershaw (remember him) gig from down south somewhere ,OMG I was totally blown away with the difference in the atmosphere .Big Country were, and still are an awesome live band
I would kill to have been there for this one! Thanks for giving us the full gig. Just awesome stuff from start to finish. Big Country rules, and Stuart will live forever!
Year 2020 with the covid bullshit going on, Big Country music sounds great today as it did then. Nothing on radio but rehash beats and noise. Miss this type of vibe and music a lot. Via Big Country!!
I taped this off the radio back in ‘84, off a local LA radio station that played Radio 1 concert series. I used to listen to it over and over. Nice to see the visual of it. They were a very powerful live band.
Yeah, this stuff kicks so much ass. I've always loved it and I still do. And could you imagine if it came out now pretty sure it would kick ass, seemed pretty timeless, the sound of the guitars, ahead of its time still
sober or drunk this greatest ever concert sounds the same, i dont't know why im trough bottle jemesons 14 san miguel still somw left, but the only thing left worth listening to is BIG COUNTRY
