I can't believe that 2 hours ago I had never heard of this band, or seen the film " Restless natives ". .. Came on TV on a little watched free channel, I gave it a chance as I read that Bernard Hill was in it .. what a scream, laughed my arse off ... then this song came on .. and BOOM, I had to know who this was. And here I am, unreal music, fantastic voice, what a band ! I've not only found my way . .. I've found treasure.
What a fantastic film and what memories of Big Country! This takes me back to the good old days when i was young and at high school.delivering milk in the mornings for a living and so care free and i could laugh and be happy with friends. 30 yrs later and im working 12 hr shifts 5 days a week and hoping for overtime on a saturday to make ends meet and wishing i was a kid again watching restless natives in my parents house on the philips vcr and gregorys girl to follow. Sigh.....
Fred stone 6 months ago you wrote this! I hope that your hard work though all these years has paid off! Remember that the years you have spent working do not define who you are and or the life that you have led! I hope that in all these years you were a good husband and father! Loved all who were there and defined your childens lives. We are all put her e to fulfill a purpose! Yours may have been to be a good man, father, husband, etc!! I hope so! then your life would have meaning! I'm sure it has. Be content and love the people in your life!
Fred stone Fred, I hope that your hard work pays off! I too have been working long hours, while praying hard that it will one day pay off. I suppose that historians will one day call this the era of the labor market distorted by 2 billion Chinese and Indian workers flooding the market. Or maybe the era of capital taking workers for granted? Or maybe the era before mining asteroids brought unparalleled economic growth to this planet? Time will tell.
Anfernee LeZagney hi. I read your comment. You mentioned working hard and you work long hours. Question - why are you not getting paid correctly for your time and energy at work? Instead of blaming foreigners - how about QUESTIONING your bosses who pay you pittance? Sweet blessings. Mr pecker decker.
Brother, I LOVE YOU though I don't know you. The boat we see in is UNSINKABLE, God is out copilot and He never fails. We are blessed with strength to withstand the roles it evil men and we WILL OUTLIVE THEM ALL. 🙏🏿🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏾💖💞👍🏻☺️😎😏🤗
FACTS! It's a shame how underrated they are because their music was a lot better than some of the glorified acts of the 80s, far better IMO. Their music had substance, Stuart was a critical thinker and their sound was just incredible.
I'd don't get how people think they're underrated. They were insanely popular when I was growing up, did world tours, made tons of albums, paid multimillions, he worked with the likes of Kate Bush. I mean what more could a band/musician want?
As fabulous and ridiculous film as any I have ever seen- just brilliant in every way. And the soundtrack is, of course, a joy. In a pathetic attempt to recapture my youth, I still go and see BC, but it's just not the same. Has there ever been someone so talented, such a poet and lyricist, who has been taken from us in the most distressing and disappointing way, who perhaps never understood the love so many, including me, had for him? RIP, Stuart.
Reared by the matriarchs of his family, he was taught to champion the oppressed and downtrodden and he lived up to that core value and kept those people always in his heart when he wrote. Unlike so many others who forgot the oppressed after making it big, he did not. The true artist believes in the small man and woman because art without advocacy is merely marketing, materialistic and empty. Never forget, he viewed himself as a loud folk musician. That means his was a social justice message, always and forever. By all that is humane and lovingly-kind, thank you Stu and thank you to the amazing folk that reared and nurtured such a global treasure as your lessons reverberate to this moment, even an ocean away.
@@frankstared . That was so well written. I, a 38 year old English guy, haven't heard of this band before, until 2 hours ago, a film came on TV ... you know it .. " restless natives " I hadn't seen before either, I noticed Bernard Hill's name in the description, I thought give this a go, laughed my arse off, heard the song come on, heard the singers voice, the lyrics etc I thought ey up, that's a bit of me alright, I love the levelers, and plenty of 60's 70's and bit of 80's music ... And here I am, and so glad, now I can look into their other songs now. What was Stuart's demise ? I keep reading about the tragic loss in awful circumstances but don't know what happened yet, anyway I'll best Google Search it I guess.
@@technomickdocumentalist2495 if you like the Restless Natives sound wait till you here the rest of Big Country … The Crossing , Steel Town , Big Country rarities albums , you are in for a treat. Listen to their version of Rockin in a free world a cover of Neil Youngs song …… class . Happy listening Mick.
@Paul Potter, yes I've just looked up their cover of " Rockin in the free world " loved it mate, preferred the studio version than the live one I checked, his voice came over stronger , it's actually my favorite song from Neil Young. 😎
@@technomickdocumentalist2495 Took his own life. Found in a hotel in Hawaii. He apparently was battling depression and alcoholism. He was a hero of mine as a kid here in the States. I miss him dearly, to this day. RIP, Stuart.
I have several soundtrack score albums that have brilliant moments mostly interspersed with ambiance but in a very disjointed manner. This soundtrack melds everything smoothly, not seamlessly but smoothly. Much kudos to engineer. Great music on this!
How can anyone give a thumb's down for this or any other Big Country songs just pick up your head out of your arse, come up screaming. STAY ALIVE TRUE FANS XXXX
If you do nothing else today, listen to this. If you're short of time, crank the volume up and skip to 26:45, the way that slowly builds up is amazing!!
I can’t agree more with Clive gist they were so underrated it’s ridiculous this is one of the greatest soundtracks out there and it’s stood the test of time
I really wish they made music like this now. My father showed me the film about 6 years ago, and I found the music complemented it tremendously. 02:05 gives me chills every time.
This brings back memories of watching restless natives with my nan (she loved it)...especially the bit where Ronnie Witherspoon vets battered by the old lady in the joke shop...brilliant film..and brilliant soundtrack..
Should watch this film just for the music of Big Country. Was a big fan in the 80's and I am a fan even now. What a band! Love listening to this even in 2017. Today's music doesn't even come close to the "soul stirring" tunes as BC's on this soundtrack. Thanks uploader.
The film was superb.....but the soundtrack made it unforgettable. Try driving through the Gaidhealtachd early on a summer's morning with this on. Magical!
We visit great friends up in Ballachulish a few times every year and this is the soundtrack on the drive up through Glencoe. Cannae beat it 😎🏴😎🏴😎
The people who disliked this or the band should maybe have had the privilege and pleasure of seeing the boys live they blow any band out the water and I have been fortunate enough to see all the big bands including queen with Freddie and meet the great frontman of queen but stuart had that bit more RIP big man a true legend along with Freddie gone but never forgotten
@chertzyb I'm not Scottish, I'm English. My pride is recognising a good band and Big Country are one of the best, got to see them live in a small gig a lifetime ago. Restless Natives is also one of my top films. Simple storyline but so good to see. Happy to have you jocks as neighbours, hope we can always be friends whatever the future holds.
Westy. Absolute poetry. Magical stuff from in my opinion the greatest and MOST underrated band ever. Sublime individual musicians, together music from the gods. Pleasure of seeing them live 25 times. RIP Stu! Brings back such fantastic memories. Keep the music alive.
I watched this movie as a kid and remember bits of it. I asked my older brothers if they recalled the title (as we quoted it all the time) and it's just AWESOME to re-discover it's glory after 30 years! :)
Been a fan of Big Country since the mid '80's or so but this is the first time I've heard this album, What a gift, to discover some new, very excellent BC after all these years.
Watched the film and listened to the album over and over during this year's heatwave when the baby and the heat wouldn't let me sleep or go outside for about 3 days, it kept me chill and happy.
Class music, listened to this in 80's as a teenager. Many fond memories of weekend camps in the Highlands of Scotland. Music fitted the scenery wonderfully.
Brilliant and beautiful! I also like the film, although it is sometimes hard to understand for me without Dutch subtitles… I have good memories to Scotland. In 2002 we went there on holiday. We cycled through the Highlands and camped (Rosyth - Dunfermline - Stirling - Loch Lomond - Inverary - Oban - Lochgilphead - Lochranza - Ardrossan - Glasgow - Edinburgh). At that moment I did not knew that Big Country started in Dunfermline… And I also did not knew of the movie Restless Natives.
I think that melody from 9.10-10.30 was Adamson's finest moment on the e-bow. Maybe someday some musicians will take up what this band did in their early days with e-bows & electric guitars and either do new music or arrange old Celtic airs with a similar approach.
I woke up this morning I don’t know why I thought this “I hold up busses” Now am here listening to this in oct 22 Must be 30 years since I heard this Memories Rip Stuart
I adored this band tragically alcohol and depression took the life of a great guitarist and vocalist , restless natives is also a bloody fantastic film. Should some entrepreneur put the whole lot in 1 major box set that would be brilliant!
An amazing mix of some Big Country's best work. Thank you for sharing this, I had to listen to it all twice to remind myself how good it once was and still is...
Now on Netflix at last. A really good transfer too. I've seen it umpteen times already but just watched it 2 days in a row in this new transfer - you've never seen it look so good unless you saw it in a movie theatre. Notice how in the end credits it says "soundtrack available on Mercury records". My friend Darren had it on order and would head into Sheffield every week for months to see if it had arrived yet - it was planned for release as an album but never came out until this CD collection. It needs a full album release. It's the best thing BC ever did.
I've just watched it on cd. Got the soundtrack on two 12" vinyls but haven't heard it in ages, can't believe it's in full on it, fantastic music, huge BC fan way back and still enjoy a blast periodically.
Same here Fred, great film, watched it many times, my love of Scotland especially its scenery plus the sound of Big Country just warms me up with a happy ending, bit of make believe so what !, a big Harry Patter fan too, nice to escape from reality from time to time, unfortunately real life is painful at times .
I love the fact that some people just post timings on here rather than actual comments. Such was the effect this band could have on you. For me, 1:48 does it every time.
Thank you for posting this. I bought the film on VHS, and it still plays, but I was never able to find the soundtrack. Greetings from The Great White North (Canada).
Full soundtrack was on the remastered 2 cd version of The Seer released in 2014 along with a few remixes of other trax... but good luck finding it these days!
Thank you for uploading. Listening, mourning the loss of a good man in Mr A, and a life that might have been so very different (his and mine). I listen to the track Restless Natives when I need to remember who I am, who I was and who (perhaps) I could have been.Going to play this to my daughter and hope that being part Scottish becomes a good thing
