After racing the Megavalanche I wanted to get my teeth into some more mass start racing and this time I really wanted to taste success.
I crashed in my quali run which wasn’t ideal but it was still good enough for a front row position. In the first race run I started on the inside and got boxed in. Someone ran into the back of my bike and damaged my rotor but I got down the hill with a reasonable finishing position.
The second race run I positioned myself on the outside of the first turn and I got a great start. I was neck and neck with Kevin Miquel for first place and then I eased off to try and take the next turn nice and slowly on the inside line. Kevin was very aggressive though and he pushed hard to close the door in front of me. I didn’t want to take him out so I tried to avoid making too much contact. Unfortunately he therefore pushed me into the big metal pole on the apex of the track which clipped my bars and caused me to crash. I got going again quite quickly and then another French rider pushed me into another big metal pole which caused an even bigger crash!
I eventually picked myself up off the ground, temporarily sorted my bike and carried on thanks to the cheers from the crowd above. From the back of the pack I carved my way through the field trying to take as many French lines as possible! Haha! So often with these races it’s the only way to get past a slower rider so I tried to advantage of any sneaky lines I could see. I was feeling pretty sore and struggling to see past my broken visor but I was amazed by how quickly I was making progress. By the bottom of the hill I’d quite enjoyed myself!
The results are done by a combined total of points obtained over both races. In the end I’d made up enough positions to take 7th overall and 3rd in the Masters category so it was a pleasant surprise to be standing on a podium at the awards ceremony after a tough day in the office.
