A three night backpacking trip in Big Frog Wilderness commencing at the Big Creek Trail Head. On day two the trip continues up Big Creek Trail and then taking Big Frog Trail and camping just off Hemp Top Trail near Big Frog Mountain. After a storm on night two, I'm briefly on the Hemp Top Trail and then take Lick Log Trail to Rough Creek Trail and camp along West Fork of Rough Creek. Day four, the final day, takes Rough Creek Trail to Big Frog Trail and then Yellow Stand Lead Trail back to the Big Creek Trail Head.
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.

Hi Bryan! The Big Frog Wilderness has a great name! Thanks for showing the maps and where you went each day! Too bad you had so many blow downs and such a brushy trail on the first day and later on too. There must have been a big storm or two this winter. It looks so lush and green by the creek, and maybe a couple weeks behind leafing out up on the ridge. That was really interesting to see the differences in the forest. Good thing you didn't have any problems during the wind and rain storm! Great trip!! - J

@BryanDeLay Год назад
Thanks Jennifer! Could have been some storms this winter, but some of these less used trails may only get maintained every 4 or 5 years. It was interesting to see the green creeping up the mountains. Certainly glad I wasn't camping on the ridge line during the storm.

Nice trip Bryan. Did an overnight on Big Frog last summer. Pretty steep terrain and not to many views IMO. As always, thanks for taking us along. Stay safe!

Enjoyed watching how the foliage was more developed down low and as you approached 4200’ plus it was so much less. Great time to be out backpacking. Sometime in your videos you need to show those gourmet meals you cook up. The only thing that could of made your video better was to see Nathan arriving after dark, hope he is doing well. Thanks for taking us along in a beautiful area. Greeting from KY!

Great video...really get a feel for the trail and how the trip went. Looks like you have your system down in terms of light weight gear, food hanging, and shelter. Just wondering what you do when its really buggy. Do you have a mesh enclosure for inside the tarp? Also, do you ever wish you had a tent with a bathtub for when its really wet? Thanks so much for sharing your adventures!
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
Thanks Caroline! As long as I've been backpacking I sure hope I've figured it out by now. If I think there will be a lot of bugs I do have a bug net to hang under the Duomid, although I rarely use it in the southern Appalachians, but use it often when I go out west. I've been using a tarp since 1998 and have never thought about going back to a tent. I have to be careful where I set up the tarp to avoid water running under the tarp. Normally I set it up in the leaves where the ground absorbs the water and there is not much runoff. Also I can use a stick or rock to fold up the edge of my ground cloth if necessary.

How about a video full of helpful suggestions on preparing to hike in wilderness areas? Such as water treatments, gear, preparations and footwear, photography tricks and tips. You are great! Also where to get your maps.
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
I'll give it some thought, but gear reviews are not really my thing, although a did a series of gear reviews five years ago and here is the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Di01dqHyrs.html. Of course some of my equipment has changed since then. Regarding maps I always try to find a map for the specific wilderness area by going to an outfitter or ordering one online. If one is not available I use Trails Illustrated maps.

I can't remember the original route I wanted to do, but all of the details you so graciously provided will def help me recreate it. Putting this one back on the short list. Thank you very much for all the content and details.

Love your content. Do you stop doing trips in East TN and Western NC during the summer due to night time sleeping temps and mosquitoes or do you still get out all summer?
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
Thanks Kent! I backpack 12 months of the year. If it's really hot, like 90 degrees, I'll backpack in the higher elevations where the high may only be 75 and the nightly lows will be in the 50's. Mosquitoes are not really a big problem in the southern Appalachians because we don't have a lot of flat water, certainly not like some places out west such as the Wind River Range where from June to early August you may have to wear a head net to keep from inhaling mosquitoes.

@@BryanDeLay That is what I figured. Let me know if you ever want a partner for an outing (I know Nathan is your #1 and rightfully so). I recently moved to Cookeville and have been backpacking for over 30 years. My trips with my adult kids are my favorites also!
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
Cookeville is a nice town; I went to TTU in the early 70's. I backpack almost once a week and generally don't decide where I'm going until the night before, since there are not many places within two hours of Knoxville that I've not backpacked. If you would like to go sometime just let me know.

You've commented on the wrong video. There is nothing about a Piney River or Pawnee River in this video.
