Big gap between pipes in TIG welding root pass

Hello everyone.
Today I did "ROOT PASS" on a pipe with a wide gap.
This technique can be said to be the most basic content when TIG welding a large gap.
This method can be applied in various situations.
It can be applied in vertical welding, horizontal welding, overhead welding, and 5G position.
I'll show you those things later.
Thanks for watching.
Best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Is there a reason not to just cut a thin piece of pipe/material and make 2 welds? I'm curious in what kind of situation this type of weld would be the best solution?
@jeepwk6.5L

@@pfistor the correct way would be to cut back and replace with a larger section that meets prober fit up. Not to cut a filler. Some places have tolerances for weld to weld spacing also

If i weld at the pace this guy is doing, i can go home at the end of the day. Also the tagging with the plates is shit for the welder, tagg bullets or straight in the root. His welding is fine but if i was his pipefitter i would start complaining he should go faster, got to make those meters!

Step 1 fire the pipe fitter! Step 2 make sure the welding inspector doesn't see it step 3 pay off the xray tech in small non sequential bills.

Okay, that was a funny (but true) comment. :)
@teddybearmaddness
@teddybearmaddness 3 года назад
@I Am Sekou the pipes shouldn't have been that far apart in the first place so you need to fire the pipe fitter, and then I guess the xray tech is going to have to inspect that whole weld meticulously for fractures and cracks becuase of its size - UT testing like that is normally incredibly expensive
@frankinjeep1194
@frankinjeep1194 3 года назад
@I Am Sekou tom lowe is correct the pipe should be closer. I work in the oil and gas industry as an inspector we must visually inspect each weld and verify correct fitment and that the correct welding procedure is followed then sign off on the weld then x-ray follows and "shoots the weld " to verify that it is in spec typically 1104 welding code witch has a specific allowance for undercut ,porosity and alignment. After the x-ray film is developed you will see all the issues including the huge gap in parent materials that were filled in and the weld would require repairs or in this case cut out and welded correctly.

Having worked in underground utility construction it’s easy to compare to this conversation. This too is partly why I no longer work in that field. It’s so very typically American to point a finger and then short cut or shut down and wait, this is why projects run over time and over budget. The trades are supposed to have masters, journeyman and apprentices, yet the masters never behave like masters. I wonder how many guys can weld this gap and feel confident it’ll pass. The gentleman in this video seems to be, but he’s very obviously not American. Keep making jokes though. The more humans fail the more likely it is a robot will be made to take ur high prevailing wage jobs.
@frankinjeep1194
@frankinjeep1194 3 года назад
@@sputnikalgrim i was looking at it from the point of view in my narrow industry witch is tightly regulated. If a weld fails and me as the inspector let it go into service I could be held liable and face prison and monetary penalties. In other industries such as residential low pressure and food processing this technique is completely acceptable. Not Ideal but acceptable and he seems to be a very competent welder that many people could learn from . I'm sure I would enjoy seeing a master at his craft work and he would be an asset. I was not denigrating his skill. I have worked in many other countries and seen less than adequate work. Its not only in the US that bad craftsman turn out crap work . So grow up every country has its good and bad . Its nice to be under budget and on time but not at the sacrifice of life and the environment.

Do not do this to your welds. It's called "slugging a weld" & from a NDT prospective it is the quickest way to fail a final weld inspection if caught. It makes the root weak and you won't achieve a sound weld slugging it.

I am a retired Journeyman Welder who also had a B Pressure ticket for pressure piping systems. I can honestly say that if anyone had been caught doing a joint like this they would have been run off no questions asked. This way of doing things would take far too long, use too much material and gas, and warp all the hell due to cooling with a slow process. When using TIG on pipe you frequently have to gap the top of the pipe wider than the bottom so that as you progress the gap will shrink as the weld cools and brings it back into tolerance. The normal way of doing this kind of work requires a set up 60 degree included angle vee preparation and the gap should be about 1 to 1 1/2 times the diameter of the filler rod with no land (sometimes called a feather edge). When you come off bottom you feed the rod through the gap so that it is inside the pipe to mitigate gravity. As you proceed up the side you change from inside the pipe to outside the pipe. There is no weaving of any kind and when you are done you should have a bead on the inside that resembles a wedding ring. Once your root is in you can run your hot pass, fill, and cap using a walking the cup method as shown here or if you are steady enough you can free hand it.

I saw one comment that put it succinctly. Its a demonstration, not an endorsement. Its just showing what can be done, not necessarily in a pipefitting situation, but in a personal use or home repair situation.

Thank you for a slow and patient explanation. My thought is that it did not seem like much penetration into the pipe metal. Also, I wonder if the irregularity on the inside can cause erosion by the material in the pipe, through turbulence?

Im a pipe fitter and i would never give my welder a gap like that....for one i would be embarrassed and for two all the welders that iv ever worked with would “politely” tell me to fix it! The usual pipe fitter term of “a good welder would catch that!”, really does apply here🤣 Saying that, i could use this video the next time my welder says the gap is half a mil to wide!

hello, im a german industrial mechanic. in my apprenticeship we learned welding, although not as good as real welder, but we had the opportunity to participate in a welding contest. this was only an experiment, it would have been great to see how you finish the weld. cause like this it unfortunately has no strength. basically you closed the gap by melting the rods. but you need to melt the pipes, and make a combination with the rod, so it form a bond. this thick pipe has to be welded in multiple layers, and there is plenty of techniques you can use. if im totally talking shit, pls let me know. but at least that is how i learned it during my time at the company.

I had to use tig pulse for these tiny little gear boxes. Had to weld these little gears on small shaft maybe 3mm wide. Also had to use feeler gauges to set the gear within a few thousands as I welded the gear on. When grounding the gear box, you couldn't put the grounding on the opposite shafts, because it could arc out internally. Basically these things were a nightmare to weld, and at $500 per gear box, messing up wasn't an option. The gearboxes were used to open and close valves for natural gas pipe lines under water if I remembered correctly.
