It was a wet muddy morning and the quad has died, so out comes the Ranger and the Lure machine for a fast paced start to the day. Paddock races, bush runs and chasing down the lure.
Luke tells Chance he’s going to get him pack ready. Luke will lose sleep over that promise. But he won’t give up.
Breakfast together.
Then we take a break in the sun to catch our breath and roll in the grass. That, and some important lessons in tolerance, thresholds and family.
We create a new thing called rescue piling. ‘Puppy piling’ was once a common term we used to describe the puppies snuggling … well now we have rescue piling. Whilst it might not be as cute to some, when you think of where everyone has come from …
… A completely deaf dog dumped in the pound (Maggie)
… A puppy abused and permanently injured by its breeder (Barney)
… An aggressive pregnant dog tied to a kitchen sink and left to die (Shadow)
… An aggressive senior abandoned 3 times (Freddo)
… A guard dog for a drug dealer sentenced to death (Rosco)
… Two brothers who have never had a loving home and who are judged on their breed and appearance (Tank and Chopper)
… Two sisters born with significant medical issues (Miss Violet and Miss Red)
… An aggressive wild dog who has never lived in a home sentenced to death for being out of control (Nevaeh)
… a mum and daughter used and abused and discarded - all for money (Hope and Faith)
… throw in four German Shepherds, a Kelpie kicked out of a sheep station, a Red Heeler who tragically lost her mum and a Pug that has no idea of hardship or size for that matter.
… and you have our pack. In the human world, could a group of similar individuals exist in such harmony?
And yet these dogs show us forgiveness for what has been done to them. They show us acceptance is not only achievable towards their peers but a close loving family unit working together is actually possible.
This kind of co-existence is inspiring for Luke and myself. Each member has more than earned a spot, if they don’t already have one, at the farm for life if they so need it. Chance included.
Perhaps these dogs might inspire someone to adopt and rescue a dog of their own from their local shelter. A Freddo, a Rosco, a Maggie even a Miss Violet.
We truly feel our life is undoubtedly better for it. As is theirs.
