Hey Aussie, great review. I’ve got a Rossi 454 casul and love it. Reloaded 300 grain xtp will stop anything. Hey just one word of advice for your mate who owns it. Shooting 45LC at steel is a heap of fun and cheap as chips with lead cast bullets. However; this case is slightly shorter and you can get a carbon ring in the chamber. When going back to the 454 after a while this carbon ring can cause a spike in pressure. On a pressure cooker round already this can make things dangerous. Marlin and Winchester couldn’t produce an action to withstand the pressure. You just need to be sure after shooting a heap of 45 to give a good carbon clean to avoid excess pressure. Cheers
That 45 long colt leave some carbon build up and pressure spiking is premium advice, so few people think of it and I wish I could give more than one like.
I wouldn't say Marlin couldn't produce an action to handle the pressure. Plenty of folks launch Buffalo. bore .45-70 Magnum rounds out of their Marlins, 430gr @ 2100fps. That's .458 Win Mag territory, and I've never heard of one blowing up; not to say it hasn't happened.
Even though it's a bigger bullet going faster the case is so much bigger that the pressure isn't any where near 454 casull levels. 454 casull is rated to 65000psi by Saami and would blow apart any marlin action very quickly. They would have to make a very strengthened version of the 336
The Winchester ammo jams in my marlin 45-70 , I bought a few boxes a while back and couldn’t get through the 6 shots without a jam, swapped to federal premium and it cycles beautifully
Good to hear. I just picked up a box of Federal for my Marlin SBL 45-70 to try. Always shot with Hornady LEVERevolution and that has always cycled well.
@@eadc888 I’ve got the same rifle as you, the federal cycles great, my red dot is sighted in for federal and off the shoulder it’s consistently accurate
you are , I think the best reviewer of firearms on RU-vid . You tell it the way it is . To show what happened at the start was great , and would make the builders of firearms take note .. Thanks for being honest ..
Decent companies just get things fixed which in my view works in their favour as it instils confidence in potential buyers. I’m well known for showing it exactly how it performs for me at the time but there are some companies that have had a real issue with this but to me it’s nothing personal, it’s just showing it how it is for me at the time of using the product.
There is a very simple fix to the feeding issue. I fixed mine a year ago and theres a bit of modification that i did to the bullet feed guides in the side if the action. These are great. My 500 was flawless out of the box. My 454 is now my favorite. Recoils easy
This market has a problem: it is hard to justify a $4500 carbine for knocking around in woods, scrub, or mountains. OTOH the 454 Rossi is the only alternative. I think the market could use a $1500-2000 that can handle 454 casull, 475-480, 500 linebaugh etc.
Nice gun. It is good to see manufactures in this day to rectify an issue to the customer satisfaction. Yea, QC should have been spot on from the get go. I have a model 89 coming in next few months. Hopefully no issues. Nice video…
Frustrating that a pricey brand new rifle had issues like that, but happy they made getting it fixed painless for him and that you did the follow up 👍 Unless I had a revolver in 454 I think I'd stick to 45-70, but it's nice to have options.
Awesome caliber 454 Casull pity its very hard to get ammo in Australia was going to buy the Rossi 454 it but was talked out of it due to lack of ammo got the Rossi 92 Citadal Levtac 44 mag very smooth for a 1/4 of the price of that one.
I thought the fact that for that price it was a single shot was laughable. Years ago you could buy the cheapest Marlin or Winchester and it would work.
Problem is it’s getting harder and harder to get them and the ammo. One came in on consignment here and 16 people looked at it the first day. Gone the following morning. Just hard to come bye these days. The Rossi R92 is roughly $1500. Solid rifle. These Big Horns are double that. I’m going to pick one up for my next purchase. I bought the Winchester 1892 44 last month. Absolutely love it.
I love this rifle but $$$$$. The 454 Casull is the best pistol/ rifle combo round IMO with amazing compression. My Ruger-Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70 6+1 is $1300 and it will stop anything in North America and is more powerful, but unlike the 454 is a rifle round.
@@ozziereviews In the 70's and 80's, my Dad made a lot of swaged bullets. He'd buy the brass cups and then swage the lead into them. These were "Half-Jacket" bullets. He had molds (moulds?) for pouring the wire from scrap lead. At the time, it was very economical and didn't lead the forcing cone like the cast bullets.
My .454 lever is VERY picky about ammo. Despite the lifter issues, if you reload, you will need to ensure the bullets feed properly before buy a few hundred.
It's not just this review, many many others had similar feeding and extraction issues even after a decent run in period. Give me 2 new Ruger Marlins. @@ArnoldBraunswagger
I already have the new SBL and have the 336 in 30-30 on order (god knows when it'll be here). Cannot recommend them highly enough after getting the SBL, might have to buy the Trapper without telling the missus...@@ArnoldBraunswagger
It looks like a nice rifle. It resembles a Win. model 92 lockup on the bolt. I think the 454 Casull is a wonder caliber for a carbine type rifle. The only thing I see I don't care for is the shape of the front sight. I've had sights like that snag when taking them from a saddle case or a uv/atv case. A ramp style snags less. Otherwise I bet it would be a great truck gun.
I will stick to my 9 1/2 super redhawk. 300 yrd 1x power sight. Had a orig Rossi, shock made it fall apart, accurate though. 4.5 k. A bit pricey yes cycles perfect, smooth performance. Nice piece.... 😊😊
I have an Alaskan Super Redhawk I shoot 454 casull with and I have been wanting a lever action to 'share ammo' with... bit of a matching set type thing. If you really want to appreciate this round you gotta try it out of a 2.5" barrel on that Super Redhawk lol
You mentioned at the beginning of the video a Big Horn model chambered for .460 S&W: Do you know if that rifle can also use .454 Casull and .45 Long Colt? Nice review--and I'm glad Big Horn supplied the correct part and paid for a local armorer to install it.
Nice review OZZIE but toooooo much money. Couple years ago you could buy TWO 1886 Winchester in 45-70 Govt. and spare money to buy Ammo. Americans they gonna think we are STUPID to spend that much money for a poor man 45-70.
I've had a puma model 92 for a while now , Love it a lot, excellent power but easy recoil. Your rifle maybe just needs a bit of running in ? But my $800 budget Brazilian always cycled smoothly from new ( although the original one I bought was replaced under warranty because of a head space issue) My thoughts on the rear sight mounted on a moving part is not good , it's definitely going to be an accuracy issue as specially as the bolt wears over time . I have used Winchester ammo but its really conservatively loaded .which I find with all Winchester loads . Magtech ammo it comes in 260gr jacketed soft point . Not only are the projectiles a bit heavier but also 200 fps faster than Winchester 250gr .... 2200 fps from magtech and only about 1900 to 2000 fps from Winchester. Accuracy is also better with the Magtech. If you reload I worked up an easy fast load . A full case ( yes I mean full to the top ! dip case into reload power and scrape of level ) 32 gr (from memory)of Blue dot topped with a 180gr sierra jacketed HP compressed load . For 2600fps out of 20" barrel. Only just showing signs of pressure. This has excellent accuracy and very flat shooting. Of course you should work up to this load in your rifle checking pressure signs as you go . Cheers happy shooting, Andre
Pretty crook for a 4 grand rifle...Their QC was not up to par. Nicely finished though. It looks like a sort of Winchester 92 clone so should work OK... Good that the factory stood behind their foul up..... For me, I'd hand-load for it....factory fodder is so expensive. You could use 250-300gr cast bullets with gas checks which would work a treat...
That's a hilariously stupid mistake. That said, it is extremely common for parts fitting issues these days. Just let damn machines do everything and they don't worry about the human element.
