Big Joe will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. He was one of the first stars I seen live back in May 1956. I was a freshman in Dayton. It was my first live concert at the old U.D. Fieldhouse. It's gone now, but not the memories. I saw Big Joe and LaVern Baker, Clyde McPhatter, Bill Haley & The Comets, Bo Diddley, The Drifters, The Platters, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, and the Teen Queens (Eddie My Love). What a great concert! I've been to many over the years, but this was my first.

I'm 76 years old now and I remember when Big Joe Turner was the best thing since bubble gum my mom and dad worked in the field but sometimes after a hard time in the field to see Joe Turner was a treat I'm a blue's man from the gut to the butt and great times

simply put he was as great a blues man as there ever was ---- the greatest blues shouter we ever had ---no Joe --- no rock and roll ------- I want a little girl------ don't get any better than this !!

Best versions of "Chains of Love" and "I Want a Little Girl." Big props to Johnny Parker throughout for a real masterclass. Also, this full concert is an excellent example of why calling Big Joe a "blues shouter" does not nearly do him justice. He was a fantastic singer who brought a lot of subtlety out of these songs, especially the ballads.

My all-time favorite singer, I first heard in 1954 , "Shake Rattle and Roll" after hearing it I converted to Jocko's radio show, I'm listening to " I Want A Little Girl" right now, sorry Ray Charles but you're not even close on this song- I saw Joe live during a Dec. snow storm in 1957 at the Academy Of Music in Philly, what a thrill. Joe was great, of course, but I was a little surprised to find that the Blues Bands of the early 60s weren't the first British musicians to understand and play the Blues - Humph and his band probably were!

Humphrey Lyttleton was one of the gretest mainstream jazz trumpeters ever. Not an innovator, but simply an excellent trumpeter. Buck Clayton was a great friend of Humph and they often played together while Vic Dickenson played often in UK with a variety of other American musicians,

Big Joe Turner was the champion of this kind (sub-genre) of The Blues - traditional jazz "band" setting, horns, etc. [Of course, Big Joe Williams of Basie band fame was great too. To bring everything kind of full circle, as most of you know, both B B KIng (guitar based but with horns) and Big Joe Williams with Count Basie Band had hit versions of Everyday I Have The Blues. The Basie arrangement was....well, I think "perfect" is the best word. Years later B B confirmed this when he overlaid his own vocal over the Basie arrangement done for Big Joe Williams. Sorry for the digression.]

I don't know the truth to this, but about 25 years ago, I read that somewhere in the mid-60's Joe Turner was appearing for as little as 50$ for a night. If true, how sad!

There weren't any name checks here I don't think; so was the English band Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen? And the piano player was hot as were the other players; an all round brilliant level of musicianship topped off with Big Joe Turner himself.
