This is same way we were instructed when I trained for few months in Shotokan karate 30 years back. They let us perform actions that way- like spear hand strike, nukite, and later we know that there is such an extended knuckle(naka daka ken) but they did not taught us or even those who know does not train their extended knuckles or spear hand ti hit them in a makiwara until it could withstand hard impact. What I am doing for physical fitness is limiting to what, I think ,are needed for self defense; and others are just for additional training. I just punch the makiwara or punching bag, training to use the whole body to exert punch, hitting the makiwara or punching bag with the extended knuckles, spear hand, and chopping the wooden table. Kicking with the toe or ball of the foot in the concrete wall, side kick to the wall at waist level. If I try to kick high, it is for flexibility exercise.
@@devildogmarine6681 not true. there are many types of shotokan influences. Sports Shotokan, but as well self defence shotokan. There is a good core of shuri te in shotokan and a big demand of the okinawan influence of shotokan by westeners. Tetsuhiko Asai for example mixed the shotokan base with chinese white crane, so you can find techniques like mawashi uke in his shotokan interpretation. there are some good changes too: The low stances are good for your muscles and helping you developening a good stance. its not an invention of japan but they took it from the shaolin and added it after funakoshis influence.
