Big news - The Ice on the Volcano Lake Askja in Iceland is Melting Fast Now

The ice on the Askja Lake above the caldera has been melting even faster since I did the voiceover for this video so things are for sure heating up under this giant Icelandic volcano, and an eruption there could be a major event so I suspect that I will make a new update soon. However, this video covers also how the Reykjanes peninsula behaves, or not, and enjoy the show, made from from samples from some of the footage I shot last summer.

Yes wow :) but not even the scientists have been there recently, it's just SAT images we are getting now, we need super jeeps or a snowmobiles to get there now, but when I get the drone, I will for sure make some calls and see if I can get someone up there with me, wow what a thermal drone could do there :)

I can't think of anywhere in Iceland where your going to find good Geology, the place is just covered in big rocks and volcanos. Be careful that no one mistakes your drone for a balloon, it's not a good time to be a balloon.

This part of the tectonic plates has been studied a lot and the people in Húsavík have been told to be prepared for an earthquake of up to m7, so m7.8 is completely new to us, but I will find out what they mean with this :)

I think a documentary interview video would be an excellent idea and a good addition to your channel. I would very much look forward to an interview with a leading Icelandic scientist/volcanologist discussing what has been learnt from recent Icelandic volcanic activity and some general discussion based upon your thoughtful questions, It has been a few years now since the initial eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula and the scientist have had time to analyse their data and write their papers.

This quiet in Iceland is a bit concerning for me. To me, this feels like the quiet before a storm. I think we could see an eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula this year again. As for Askja, that could produce a large ash eruption if it starts under the lake.

I've watched a couple of your videos and really like this one, especially about prioritizing projects. Subscribed just to help out. Boy Howdy, do I know about that, I've been working on one for fifty years and have many long term projects. I think I found an "easy" one , finally, and it just took over all projects for awhile. It sure is being a pain though, it is like Murphy's Law giving me the whole plethora every step of the way, alike last night I spun a mill bit in a collet. Lots of luck learning interviews. Sure looks like that little town is going to get it eventually. Should have a Wile E Coyote sign at the beginning of that tunnel, warning that there may not be a road when exiting.

Do under sea earthquakes produce unusual sea ripples ?

They can. But the ocean is rough and stormy that they have to be fairly large for people to notice them. Notice how large the waves were that were mentioned in this video. The biggest tsunamis come from subduction faults. But people in the North Atlantic have lost their lives even to what might look like small waves, of say, 2 m or 6-10 feet height. That's a lot of water.

A few seamen drowned back than when they got hit with a tsunami, but this is however a rare thing, however, the 1934 earthquake in Dalvík caused some waves as well, and thanks for visiting :)

No I won't go that way :) however, my videos are with 100% voice over now and I have often footage that I'm leaving out for that sake, then I need assistance with final text, and little details that I dont give my self the time to do, like this video is a 30-40% of a full documentary length, edited in less than a day, 2 days work in total, and doing this at less speed will only improve my work, and thanks for the comment, appreciated :)

Yes, I agree with your professor, faults in Iceland do have the potential to cause powerful earthquakes and we mustn't be controlled by the fear of that but must be aware it is possible and nature is powerful. The Tohuku magnitude 9 Japanese earthquake was a strong lesson about not underestimating nature even though such a powerful earthquake had never been recorded before in Japan's long history of recording earthquakes. I think you will do a brilliant job making documentarys. Great video and a lot to think about 😁

Thank you for your update on the geological activity on Iceland. Me, my wife, and our two daughters are going to Iceland this June. I hope Iceland will keep quiet and not shake and blow fire and ash too much, I really want to visit. A small tourist eruption is welcome though. Our plan is to drive on highway 1, the ring road, and make detours here and there. We will stop in Akureyri and drive around in the area. I have seen your Iceland towns series, so I have a few ideas where to go already. Do you have a favorite direction when driving the ring road? Or maybe it doesn't matter. Greetings from Norway 🙂

Well, the ring road is a faulty concept in so many ways :) it's a concept that symbols the south coast bridge, opened in 1974, but misleading for the tourists since it's way more to Iceland than just this road :) I recommend lake Mývatn and Ásbyrgi, The Snæfellsnes Peninsula but the west fjords is a trip of it's own, not to be missed, and i'm just mentioning the places that are outside the official ring road :) And if you will be here up north, the Tröllaskagi peninsula is way more interesting road then Higway one :) Check this one for that :) and welcome to Iceland ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-18S-NGIG53M.html

We may not drive the whole way around #1, only the part to get to where we want to go. #1 is about 1300 km, it may not be realistic to drive all around Iceland. The girls want to go to the usual sights in the south west, and they want to go to Snæfellsnes. I have seen your videos, and I agree there is much more outside the #1 than on it 🙂

Your plans sound good to me. I love your work. The scenery there is fantastic. I'm a retired physicist, but if I was young and lived in Iceland, I would have definitely become a geologist. Again, I am only an amateur geologist traveling around the the USA west looking at rocks and mountains. But I would be surprised if Iceland would have a M7.8 , The forces and faults in Turkey would seem to me to be much bigger. But surely Iceland can frequently experience M7.

Yes this was a surprise, however this huge shift on the Húsavík Flatey fault must be the reason for this, since it's around 2500 yrs old and the displacement was enormous, so I suspect that they estimate that earthquake to have been of 7.8 magnitude, but not for me to say though, but I will find out, thats why I want to make a documentary from there :) and thanks for sharing, and always welcome to Iceland :)

Yes, I noticed that too. I love his accent. Icelandic comes from Old German. Much of English comes from Old German. The German language doesn't have the "w" sound that we do in English. I struggle with language. I know someone with the first name German who is Spanish and he pronounces his name more like "Hjerman"! I struggle with that Spanish "g" as English doesn't have that sound. Fascinating.

The oroi (harmonic tremor) chart at Fagradalsfjall has been a little jumpy lately, where all 3 colored frequencies go above 4000. (In the past, this would indicate eruptive activity.)

Our experts stated just today that they believe the last earthquake swarm was due magma movements, and they expect an eruption within 1-2 years, but I think it's gonna bee sooner, but only my guess..

You really make me feel so vicariously at home with your videos and commentary. I would be a huge fan of any longer-form content you would produce. Regarding your need for more air time for collecting footage. I saw somewhere on YT that there is a small diehard group of paraglider pilots in Iceland. I realize that a helicopter is more comfortable and the pilot leaves you free to focus solely on the imagery. But a paraglider is way cheaper to operate, requires no certification (at least in the US) and at the same time is in a tier up for payload and endurance over the drone. Could also be very fun and add even MORE content on top of what you already so skillfully create! Thank you once again Gylfi!!!

I actually gave this option a though a while back :) the obstacle would be the image stabilization, I cant handle shaky footage, and fixing such in post means lost pixels plus it's hard to fix nature videos from air, when everything is moving, so even a helicopter is harder to work with then a drone with a built in image stabilization system, they are so extremely good, but your idea is great for photography, and If I had the chance, I would try this :) but it's not that many people doing paragliding around here, don't know why...

Could be it is too risky. Winds can change quickly and you are at their mercy. Your equipment is valuable as well as your work. Check into the risk before you even think about it. Iceland is known for its changeable weather and tricky terrain. But you know that far better than I do!😊

Your videos of Iceland are so incredibly beautiful and informative! Documentaries seem like a natural progression for you! I can't wait to see what you find out with the thermal drone. As far as high magnitude earthquakes are concerned, those of us living near plate boundaries need to be prepared for them--especially if there haven't been any for relatively long periods of time. In looking at our geologic and seismic records, our scientists say we're overdue for a major quake in the US Pacific Northwest. They expect a 9.0 within the next 40 years.

The experts stated a few years back that we should get ready for a m7 in worst case, so the tension is already there, but a 7.8 is new info, and needs to be explained better!

As I watch your videos and listen to you speak, I often wonder what (& where) it must have looked like when lava 1st broke through the surface of the ocean to create Iceland. Can scientists give an estimated location to the oldest, or earliest known rock?

This is a fantastic question! Yes they can, the oldest rock can be found in the West and East-fjords, the centre of the Icelandic cake is still just half baked :) and iv'e always wanted to see a graphic demonstration of how out country was formed, but might have to have it done my self :)

If I remember correctly, the earthquake scale is logarithmic so an earthquake of 8 is 10 times larger than an earthquake of 7. So 7.8 compared to 7.1 could be very nasty.

The recent earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria are a harsh reminder that Nature has always the upper hand and that it is better to be well prepared and ready to move to a safer place. There are seismometers up there, yes, and our experts say the might indicate an eruption like 1-2 days before it takes of, however, it's a lake almost above the caldera so it would not surprise me if this goes off with a bang

@@JustIcelandic Yes, sure the lake acts like a cork on a bottle of champagne. Once the magma makes contact and due to the pressure, that water will be vaporised with a bang.

While it was good to hear an update on Askja there is a concern of the power that may suddenly erupt from there as news recently showed the great canyon like chasm from Turkey-Syria earthquake seen in an olive grove ; changing the landscape there quickly. I know you are anxious to get views of Lake Askja before this sort of massive change happens there....This has been an interest in your life for a long while (earthquakes,volcanoes,detection systems,etc.) But safety concern is part of this for responsible viewers who would rather have you survive along with your work....That being said, do you have life insurance? Probably not the kind I am thinking of... That’s why I will be praying for you as I hope others are. @@JustIcelandic yeah a wide area should soon or later be closed off because this could erupt with rocks the size of a truck flying up to a large distance combined with cooking hot waves of pyroclastic flows.. plus lahars could swep a wide region..
