Nothing wrong in wanting fuel economy especially if you are not filthy rich. All the macho boys on their expensive super bikes probably only do 2,5 k miles a year .

The low prices on the Pan America just goes to show that their not particularly popular among Harley Owners or many others. Let’s be honest it’s not a looker and many think it’s hideous.

Thanks for the great videos. You always have the best insights into the riding world. The most amazing winter ride that I ever encountered was in January, 1971. I was just 18, and had a job helping set up at the annual motorcycle show in the convention centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was -8 C outside, the wind was howling, and it had snowed 50 cms in the previous 24 hours. We were just finished moving in one of the last of the display Harley Davidson motorcycles, when we heard the sounds of a Harley riding up through the entrance doors and right out into the display hall. It was the amazing sight of a full dress Harley Electra Glide, covered in muddy slime, ice, and salt, ridden by a person wearing a huge Buffalo Hide coat, and with huge hand muffs on the handlebars. It was the legendary Trev Deeley, Canada's distributor of Harley Davidson, since 1917! He was in his late 70's, and had just ridden 1100 kms from Vancouver on the West Coast, over the Rocky Mountains, and to Calgary, in 16 hours. That was in freezing weather through a snowstorm, overnight and all day, on a touring bike that weighed over 700 lbs! He told me that when the Calgary show ended, he was riding East to Winnipeg, Manitoba for the next show the following week. That's another 1600 kms, in the middle of our Canadian winter. He was my god inspiration of a rider, a famous former factory Harley flat track racer, and was the first non-American named to the board of directors of Harley Davidson, and the first distributor of Honda motorcycles in the English speaking world. The Trev Deeley Museum, adjacent to the dealership here in Vancouver, is a must see for any motorcycle enthusiast. Displayed are motorcycles from the first ever motorcycle built by Benz, through all of the best of every brand since.

If you want economy. I have a 2023 NC750x. I commute every day on a very stop start commute and get over 70mpg. I recently went up to Milton Keynes for a bike rally from Crawley (near Gatwick) and got around 90mpg. This summer I’m doing the NC500 on the same bike. You can’t underestimate how amazing this bike is. I don’t drive, and in the 40 plus years I’ve been riding, and have owned over 27 bikes. This is hands down the best commuter I’ve ever owned, especially with its Frunk. Try one, you’ll be amazed. It won’t set your pants on fire, but still, you’ll be amazed. PS - I am looking for something sexy (bike) as second, weekend, pants on fire, bike.

Well said. I find it a fascinating subject. Furthermore, while plenty of motorcyclists have no interest in fuel economy, there are many out there for whom fuel economy is everything (I was one of those for a number of years). Ironically I own an NC750X that Freddie talked about. Incredible machines.

As others have said, the real story with the Pan Americas is their terminal depreciation! If a bike in a HD dealer is on at £8995 they will have given maybe £6500 tops £7k for it. If you have bought that bike new you are swallowing a very bitter pill. So much for rock solid HD residuals.

What’s wrong with wanting better fuel economy? That’s actually one of my deciding factors when choosing an adventure bike. Better fuel economy = longer range per tank. The better the fuel economy the less fuel you need to carry which translates to lighter weight.
@rufysufy

Prior to going down the rabbit hole of looking at what touring bike to get, the panam was top of list. However the 21-22 models are full of QC issues and mechanical and electrical faults such as the engine cutting out mid ride, going in limp mode, not starting etc. A lot of them keep going in and out of dealers for repairs, there was a batch with the instrument cluster not centered and generally I kept reading how you can't rely on them for long distance touring. This is well documented on youtube and forums. This is why they're so cheap to buy. My aim was to tour mainland Europe with my wife. I cannot have a bike that has proven to leave people stranded time and again. I would love to be able to rent one and ride it but at the end of the day, I don't want my fun ruined because at the back of my mind I know I may be riding a ticking timebomb.

The reason the used Pan America is so cheap is that there is a huge lack of confidence in the bike, that's why they are so reduced - they are hard to sell. They have a long history of electrical problems that makes them a bit of a risk. Four of my friends bought new Pan Americas; one returned his after a few months of continuous problems, one returned his after a couple of years during which HD had the bike for about eight months trying to fix it and failing, one returned his after two years but with multiple electrical problems and one still has his but it regularly fails to start due to electric problems. An HD dealership manager told me that they are overpriced compared to the competition and have not been updated since their first production (unlike their competitors). I test rode one it it was fantastic but that's not the same as owning one.

Q: "Why motorcycle being almost 10 times lighter vehicle with half a displacement that of a car, has almost the same mileage as car". A: "Your a tree hugger, don't ride motorcycles". Some people are just plain dumb, don't bother. I'm no engineer, but my guess would be RPMs, since every odd (depending on strokes) revolution is actual detonation i.e. burning fuel. While it's quite normal for a bike being in 4-8k rev range, that's really a lot for the car hence motorcycles burn fuel faster.

Riding in flip flops and shorts should be a personal decision. However once you’ve had a 40mph arms legs bum/road interface you will change your mind. I found that out in 1976 when I threw my new Suzuki GR750 down the road after hitting a sea of diesel. My wife had knees down to the bone (that went septic because of the diesel) I lost ankles and elbows. Never been out without full leathers ever since!!!

While I totally agree about using full protective clothing but with regards to personal choice I have a differing opinion. You can't ride a bike without a crash helmet and the same should apply to a certain amount of protective clothing. The NHS is on it's knees as it is and any measures to stop any more drain on it has got to be welcomed and should apply to many aspects of society.

I rode an NC 750 in Gran Canaria on two days doing a range of twisty up and down hills with some fast road and on each occasion achieved over 90mpg. My KTM 690 Enduro R in the US got a 75mpg average over a 2 day 450 mile ride. Most astonishing, however, was my old buddy’s Triumph 1200 Speedmaster also in the US managed close to 90mpg over a 3 day 700 mile ride. These are all real world figures and on each ride keeping pace with fast bikes.

While a lot of people have a bike purely for a summer weekend blast and fuel consumption really isn't an issue but if you do a lot of touring, then not only do you want the advantages of power but you also want decent fuel consumption as well, as that can have a big difference on your total cost of your holiday.

Fab vlog this week love the rants and your reading of them. If you commute you may want economy, but as a leisure/thrill rider you buy for different reasons. It’s true there are all rounders. Many people have 2 bikes. I commuted from 16 yrs - 64 yrs old on 50cc-125cc and latterly on 250 scooter but the commute was really about being on 2 wheels over the economy. Riding to work with ethereal smells, fresh air and pleasure a relaxation before work and riding home. Also traffic busting easy parking etc. we all just love 2 wheels. At 65 never had a new bike, sometimes had 3 or 4 bikes worth less than mates single ownership BMW. Choices are great

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode, not least because a couple of subjects resonated. I used to commute 55 miles each way per day to work. 110 miles return. My car did 60mpg (pretty decent) thus a week of commuting was 10 x 55 = 550. Divide by 60 equates to 9 gallons, or at £6:81 a gallon = £61 per week I bought a Honda NC750X-DCT. It returned 100mpg thus a week of commuting was 10 x 55 = 550. Divide by 100 equates to 5.5 gallons, or at £6:81 a gallon = £37:45 a week. This is a saving of over £1,700 a year. The second subject that resonated was the cost of new bikes. In the last three years I have bought 2 new bikes, both in the region of £15,000 Last week I decided to sell my 1 year old gen 3 Suzuki Hayabusa, replacing it with a used (but extremely tidy) ZZR1400, and a 2017 Honda NC750X. I now have 2 bikes that cover almost all bases. I don't see myself buying new again. Like a lot of motorcyclists I tend to change my bikes fairly frequently and just cannot justify the continual losses.

I bought my R1250RT when it was three years old, for £12,300. It was fully-loaded including audio pack, had done just 3,000 miles and had obviously spent all its short life in somebody's garage. The price was half that of a fully-specced new RT. It's still the most I've ever spent on a motorbike, but in the shaft-driven touring market there aren't that many options. It hasn't disappointed and - for me - it's a better option than spending the same money on a brand new middleweight.

Just subscribed, very impressed with your intelligent approach to our common hobby. I agree with your comments about the fuel economy of modern motorcycles - there is certainly a place for fuel efficient machines, even if their top line performance is inhibited. I ride a HD Ultra and would like to buy a second machine as a daily workhorse. I’m not seeking silly performance, I just want a bike that can handle one and two up riding without costing me too much money to run… so hence, good fuel economy. I also want a machine that I’m not too worried about getting wet and dirty during the winter, which is certainly not the case with my Ultra which takes me forever to clean. But there are remarkably few “big” bikes that meet these criteria. I’ve been looking into the NC750 for a while now. Your vlog has convinced me that I need to go try one. Thanks for posting, I will follow you with interest from here on and click like. Cheers, Lee.

Freddie, just watched your pod cast about a wife telling the husband to buy a Triumph. Be careful what you wish for, my friend watched me become a born again biker in my 50s, he also used to be a biker in his 30s. I fancy a Fireblade he said, so for his 60th birthday she bought him one, a five year old bike with his own registration plate. It looks lovely in a pure white. The down side is his wife called me up, saying he’s not riding it, can’t you come over and get him going. He was absolutely terrified of the bike, but I got him going, we did a few rides, but it’s a garage queen, it doesn’t go anywhere. Be careful what you wish for ! The Yorkshire trip, I’ve done some of those roads, brill. The down side, you didn’t have a bacon butty at tDevils Bridge, best ever. The rumour is, the pitch was sold for over £1 mil because of the amount of business it does year round. I went to the NEC and threw a leg over the Transalp, it felt ok, but I’m loving the NC 750X, a stranger to petrol stations

I agree that a bit of emphasis is being put on MPG numbers and all that. The thing is some people care about that and for some it's not a priority, especially with the group of people I ride with (mostly Harley Davidsons), in fact people spend thousands of £s to chase after performance by installing big bore kits, new cams etc. which in turn drops fuel economy. What is valid though is the performance you get relative to fuel economy. I want to be able to enjoy the power at a twist of the throttle, but at the same time I don't want to be visiting a petrol station every 100 miles. I'm happy with the performance I get and still being able to get 200+ miles out of a tank and it costing about a quarter of the price to fill up my tank compared to my car.

MSRP is ~$6500, out the door you’re paying ~$9000 with taxes, destination fees etc. I bought mine out the door for $5940 with a 0-down, 0% interest loan. There is a reason the Pan Americas are the price they are… admittedly I’m not a HD fan but the comments seem to confirm they are a rubbish bike that no one wants.. like all HDs they are ridiculously expensive to buy & maintain… I’m not surprised you now consider the 2nd price “cheap” .. dealers are obviously are having a hard time selling them…. Ultimately it’s your money so spend it how you like !!

You can pick up some fantastic deals on nearly new machines and not just 3 or 4 year old bikes as well if you bide your time and be patient. Last May I saw a Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX performance tourer advertised at a dealer for £12,450. It was just 6 months old with 1,200 miles on the clock. I went to see it the following day, and it had every Kawasaki accessory fitted plus the comfort seat. In addidtion, it had R & G radiator and down pipe guards, fender extender, crash bobbins and Michelin road 6 tyres fitted. To spec the bike up to that extent probably cost in the region of £15,500, and I picked it up, with a service thrown in by the dealer so I wouldn't have to travel the 50 miles for its annual service in November, for £3K less than that, plus the dealer also paid for an all day breakfast in the on site cafe. I got a good price for my Honda I was part exchanging as well. In my mind, it was a deal I couldn't refuse, and I bought a bike that I am more than happy with.

Hey Freddy, I understand your comment on dropping your off-road bike. And it would be better to take an older one, so you be less worried. I actually have a brand new KTM 890 ADV R. And yes I take it off-road even on KTM raids. I drop it, part of the off-road riding. But I did prepare it in a way the damage is limited to some scratches on the handguards or special skidplate. I see those as a must on an off-road bike. Of course, plenty of people will disagree and ride it only on-road. Don't get me wrong that's ok. It doesn't mean I don't love my bike with all I got!

I've been driving for nearly 40 years and not once have I picked a car due to it's MPG. I've only been riding for 2 years, had one bike since passing my test and again, I didn't pick it for it's MPG. If the day ever comes that I start looking at mpg as the reason to purchase a bike, I'll give it up as I will have proven to myself that I deserve nothing more than my pipe and slippers.

You’re absolutely right to raise the issue of fuel economy. With all the eco zealots in places of power it’s exactly comments like those that help their cause to ban or restrict bikes too. We, the biking community, need to be seen as rational, intelligent people rather than petrol heads or climate change deniers (of course). I want decent economy and performance. Both are possible without resorting to a bicycle or small capacity scooter.

Glad you picked up on the HD Pan Americas, now around £8k private seller, I'm finally interested, the PCP finance companies must be sweating on the residuals, on outstanding machines, especially which were spec'd to over £20k off of the showroom floor? Not the worst of bikes, nothing that cannot be sorted, right hand switchgear seems an issue, radiator hose can be modified to '24 spec... PS; My 1993 Honda CBR900RR Fireblade, with no mirrors and a NSR500 bodykit, averages 64mpg average riding around Europe, average speed 80mph on the m/way...

A piece of advice for the guy who wants to drive a little off-road. Buy the Tiger don't hesitate. You will have a Motorcycle for many years to come. The only negative thing about it is the service cost, which is a bit high compared to many others. But apart from that a super bike. I personally had a Tiger 2014 model which I had for five years.

Regarding fuel economy, or the lack; so many are completely missing the point. The drag coefficient on a bike with rider is terrible so the chances of good mpg figure are handicapped to begin. When 1000cc cars, weighing around a ton can be more economical than most bikes weighing under 250 kg,there is obviously something wrong. The Honda NC series have engines derived from the Honda Jazz. The Jazz is a car, says it all really.

I used to have a Suzuki Vstrom 1000xt, I regularly got 55-60mpg on runs. My current Meteor 350 does 90mpg and my Honda SH125i averages 140+mpg, only dropping to 125 mpg when doing flat out motorway riding. My old BMW F650 St used to return 70+mpg, so it is possible for bikes to be very economical.

Would you buy an adventure bike from a manufacturer who has never made one before???? If so, go for a Harley, but ask yourself why the depreciation is so high compared to Harley cruisers. Could this be because it’s not as good as the completion who have been making adventure bikes for years??? 😀😀

Freddie, a lot of talk about how much some recently new motorcycles have depreciated over the last few years and the savings to be had but what about those that have lost very little? Maybe you could do a talk covering some of those? Last December I bought an eight year old immaculate 3k mile Ducati Scrambler sixty2 for just less than £5k, it has only lost about £1.5k in those eight years.

The comments on economy seem pretty eliteist. I use my bike to do everyday tasks, commuting seeing family etc, it's frustrating when it uses more fuel that my car. I have swapped that cbf1000 put for a re interceptor 650 and I find I'm riding it more knowing it's saving my money to do a journey I would have be doing anyway.

Lots of people care about MPG. Its the people turning serous miles usually. It does not matter to others because they dont ride that much. I dont ride enough to worry about the cost of fuel myself. But I care because of how often I need to stop for fuel. My current 230CC makes about 80MPG US. With a 3.2 gallon capacity, I am dry at 256 miles. Not one to push my luck, I stop for gas at around 200 miles anyway. But I usually ride about 100 miles at a time. My normal ride through the mountains passes only one gas station. So I need to stop every other ride. A 50mpg bike with the same tank would be 160 miles so I would have to stop every time. A 30 mpg bike would not make it back to the gas station. But besides that, stopping for gas is not fun. 100F in the summer here an high humidity, stopping for gas is painful. That ride where I dont have to stop is nice. The ride where I do is not as fun. First part is dreading the stop. Then the stop. Then I am sticky with sweat for the rest of the ride. Get home an shower, an wash my gear. I dont want to stop more. If I could get better than 100mpg, I would only have to stop ever 3ed ride. That would better.

Hi Freddie, To be honest during my 58 years of riding motorcycles fuel economy has never been an issue, even during the fuel shortage during the 70s, I just got on the bike and rode until it went on to reserve, never even checked the prices, I must admit though when I shop at my local supermarket my savings instinct leads me straight to the reduced Isle, or is it just me? Anyway the only issue I've ever had riding a motorcycle is the fuel tank capacity, I have an Indian with a 12 litre fuel tank that will cover a distance of 120 miles if I take it easy, very annoying having to plan a route via petrol stations, I choose to ride my BMW GS with a fuel tank capacity of 24 litres that covers 300 miles plus when on long distance trips whilst enjoying the ride knowing I can easily reach my destination before having to fill up again, Simple Stress Free Motorcycling...Added Edit (with panniers full of out of date food).

@landzw

Fuel savings can actually purchase that newer bike over buying something older with a larger engine, in some ways it’s false economically to purchase or keep some of these older bikes. But it depends on what kind of rider you want to be, a weekend blaster doesn’t really need to worry about mpg to much. It reminds me of the days when I was riding my bandit 600 all year round 20k+ per year and I would get comments of the leathered up racer boys commenting on my bike being a poor man’s bike 🫣 I don’t care what sport bike they had, they just wasn’t fit for my purpose. I’m currently looking at getting back on a bike and put some miles in and I have NC750s, NC750x, vstrom 650 are currently in my list for 5k because I know they will deliver on miles and fuel.

I’ve not seen the “why are the why are bikes so expensive to run” vid but I have multiple bikes and if I were to run something like a 20 year old honda 500 it would be: £80 per year tax with £80 insurance and sod all to self service. That’s still way cheaper than my £0 road fund plug in hybrid car, which is £225 to insure and £180 to service (the barely running engine) MPG in on a long fast run is not dissimilar oddly.

My Toyota Auris hybrid gets 4.5l/100km in the summer. It is very hard for me to justify a motorcycle that uses more than that. Or even close to that. I like seeing the Honda Monkey and some of their other 125cc bikes getting 1.5l/100km. Now that is something I can justify! For me it just has to start with a 2. So 2.99l/100km is the maximum.

Had a Tiger 800XR as my return-to-riding bike after a 10-year hiatus. I found it really dull Freddie...Flat spot around 45-60 and always felt like I was having to push it (and I'm no hooligan!).. PX'ed it for a Multistrada 1200s w/20k on the clock and FSH for £6.5k, and it was like stepping off Easyjet and climbing aboard Concorde, in every respect. I've done 7k miles on the multi in 8-months and it hasn't missed a beat. Get 50mpg without any problems (the Tiger achieved around 60). It's so good I might have peaked too soon...Where do you go next after a multi?
