"Once stood a natural merchant. A merchant with a firm resolve, always willing to barter wherever he goes. A merchant who would find any way to become a shogunate. Eventually, he started receiving letters from an unknown person. His advices helped, and he quickly rose in fame, and known as the legendary merchant. As unforeseen as the first received letter was, the disappearance of the unknown person had caused his downfall. Once was a sane man, now a yōkai with its mind corrupted by the past."
I think Spamton would be a Tsukumogami, those objects that gain life and turn into evil monsters after being left neglected for years and years. it fits his backstory well
"An ancient scroll tells the story of a unlucky merchant who, after making a pact with a sinister Yokai, achieved fame and fortune, he even became the financial advisor of the imperial palace, but once he was on the top, the yokai collected his part of the deal, taking from him his fame, fortune and his sanity. The merchant now wanders aimlessly in search of someone who could give him back what he truly had lost: his freedom"
Trigger’s Yokai/historical figure database: Ningyō Shōnin The Ningyō Shōnin was a yokai said to take the form of a very short man, wearing a contradictory purple silk Kimono and ratty old straw hat. (The contradiction being purple dye being very expensive, whilst straw hats were typically warn by rice farmers, who were peasants.) if one looked closely they could also see faint green strings extending to the sky. This Yokai was often said to have strange speech patterns, its voice changing between words, often combining multiple words together, attempting to sell those it encountered random junk. The Ningyō Shōnin would often seek the souls of humans, believing it could make itself a successful merchant should it obtain one and cut its strings. One of the many origins for this yokai is the tale of a Merchant whom rose to have several Samurai and Daimyō as customers, even having one of the three great unifiers of Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as his patron. His success being attributed to his dealings with Yokai, whom passed him letters with mercantile advice. However, his success soon quickly collapsed after he began selling bad goods to the Daimyō. Most tellings attributing a trusted Samurai of Hideyoshi’s death being caused by a sword the merchant sold him breaking. Infamous for his temper that also caused the death of Sen no Rikyu, Hideyoshi had the merchant boiled in oil in retribution. When Hideyoshi’s men searched the merchant’s home to repossess the lavish furnishings, they found the alleged letters from the yokai, containing nothing more than seemingly meaningless scribbles.
@@Shrimp_Alfredo0" A perfect song match. I never thought that 'Big Shot' would look Japanese so far! The image was also cool and I couldn't help laughing😂"
Spamton: I remember when I was a [little ninja] no kills no honor but now I am [BIG SHOGUN] all the [honor] all the [fame] all the [glory] I could have ever asked for!
Sorry to switch what you were talking about but what do you use Kanji for? I am able to use Hiragana properly and Katakana to some grade but I can’t read Kanji at all.
I’m watching this on the anniversary of when everything in my life went down hill. Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me calm down even in my most darkest times. 1:36am February 14 2023, Tuesday
I love how you made him wear a purple robe, yet also wearing a farming hat. Purple robe was only worn by those who hold power and fame, yet in stories, those who wore these hats were usually of poor or lower class. The two contradicting elements perfectly fits here
Fun Fact: The reason purple is associated with wealth is because while many dyes could be extracted from plants or other sources one could cultivate, purple dye was only really available from a dozen or so species of certain shellfish (most famously snails in Rome). So getting purple dye was an excruciatingly long and arduous process of harvesting thousands of these shellfish just for a few ounces of dye. A robe dyed completely purple likely cost a small fortune until more advanced methods and synthetic options were available.
A covetous puppet trying to escape it's limitations by stealing a human soul actually sounds a lot like a proper youkai now that I think about it. I could totally see Hyakkimaru or Ushio and Tora fighting this version of him.
Darkners in general seem like tsukumogami to me. They share being based on objects along with developing a soul of sorts. Darkners attitude also seem to parellel tsukumogami in that those who where mistreated will want vengeance; The King of Spades in Chapter 1 being a good example of this.
@@holydiver4988 well they do use the song a lot for the speedruns... also to TDS can I get more Hammer speedruns please, I was talking to a friend and he said that hammer sucks cus it didn't get updated with good moves and has been stale weapon for too long so now I'm sad cus he's actually ryt
Quite a distinguished gentleman with a bedazzling blade of steel designed for slashing and cutting. His robe of purple cloth with mixes of a more vibrant shade of purple with wrinkles adds to the unique look. And his hat made from the materials gathered from the plant known as straw and constructed into a pyramid looks quite exquisite as well.
He's a merchant that remains passive until you're 3/4ths into the game then he stops being passive and attacks you, if you beat him you get everything on him plus any kromer you spent. He can be a good Sekiro boss ngl
In Feudal Japan, merchants and salespeople were generally seen as the lowest class, as they were seeen as contributing the least to society. It's quite fitting for someone like Spamton, who is no BIG SHOT when we first meet him.
@@ExplosiveEntropy The same way you get NEO Either break into a castle dungeon and give him the tools to become one Or "Freeze" everyone and let him just take control of the empy vacuum of power
However, note that he's also wearing a purple robe, which indicates nobility or wealth, since purple dye at the time was so expensive and rare that only the wealthy could afford it.
It's fascinating how honestly the main focus of this video is the music, and yet looking at the comments it's clear the image just stole the show. And reading more and more comments making interpretations of every element, from japanese folklore to the purple clothing to the hat, I don't know how much of all this details were truly planned and thought out by the artist but it is certainly evocative if it causes everyone to get their own interpretation of it.
Hadn't noticed that before, thanks for contributing to the ones of us that don't see all the details (even though the strings are actually green in the original material)
I love the representation of spamton as what seems to be a yōkai. I think the exxagerated proportions fit the idea. Props to the artist, let alone the remix just fucking bangin
i do not believe it is a yokai, but rather it is a 'hannya' mask, a jealous female demon, when these masks or portrayed in red, it is to symbolizes fully giving to evil, to your most primal and basic urges, and completely giving up any semblance or humanity, or civility. here though his mask is a deep shade of gray, which usually symbolizes, that this is before the woman has been scorned, smaller horns, and still human-esque. although this may sound very dark, the word 'hannya' in japanese actually means wisdom, and the masks are considered good luck, used to ward off evil.
@@darthcloakedguy9726 Purple was once one of (if not the) rarest colors for clothing, normally only worn by richer folks, while rice hats were commonly seen among the poor
@@LowHB Ok, now I'm curious about something. Did Medieval Eastern Asia have purple dyes? I know that in Europe, purple dye came from the Murex Snail and only one port had figured that out and monopolised the trade. Did China import purple dye from the same source, or did they have their own supply? Or was it just too expensive to import all that way and they just went without the colour purple in their clothing. Curse my Euro-centric education, I know nothing about Asian trade beyond Silk and Ceramics :/
The problem with spamton's vocals is because they're locked to the song itself. There's no file with only his vocals so most just leave the song alone or make their own vocals.
@@LostKiddo But when said voice lines are covered my intense music, I don’t think they would sound muffled because it’s already covered by loud intense music. Also, the same thing applies with the music still quietly playing, that part will be covered up by the music.
日本の楽器に興味を持ってくれるだけじゃなくてこんな曲まで作ってくれるの最高 As a Japanese, I am very happy and proud that they are not only interested in Japanese instruments, but also in using them to create such highly accomplished music.
Once upon a time, there was an unfortunate merchant living in Japan. He looked like a short old man wearing glasses with purple and yellow glasses and smoking a small kiseru. He often carried a katana with him, on the handle of which the inscription [[FREEDOM]] was engraved. At that time, the merchant suffered constant setbacks. At the market, no one noticed his products at all. Market visitors paid no attention. But on the day when all the merchants came together, the unfortunate merchant said that someday he would become great - that one day he would be [[BIG SHOT]]. Desperate, he began to look for any ways to get his goods noticed, until one day a visitor approached him, who led the merchant to the long-awaited success. Other merchants began to notice that he began to leave much earlier than before. Since then, his products have been noticed more every day. He even engraved another inscription on the handle of the katana. Many traders became jealous of his popularity. Even the Empress herself provided him with a separate room in the palace. Suddenly, the one who helped him in promotion suddenly disappeared and the success began to collapse. His sales began to decline with him. Once again a failure, the merchant was evicted from the palace. When one of his acquaintances checked his room, he found only a note written in a completely incomprehensible language. Abandoned by everyone, he was forced under a bridge next to the empress's palace. After overhearing the conversation of one of the empress's servants, the merchant learned about the existence of the Great Armor in the palace and began to make plans on how to steal them in order to fulfill his dream. Rethought Spamton's lore a little, there may be errors in the text. Thanks to this version of Big Shot, I changed and came up with this story. Thanks to the author of this video !
My suggestion would be to have it so then he carved the feedom kanji into the hilt of his sword after he got evicted, since he got addicted to freedom after being kicked from the mansion in Deltarune. Other than that, this comment is absolutely fantastic!
I have a feeling that if Spamton was part of Japanese folklore, he would be an oni disguised as an old man in need, trying to scam/manipulate people into helping him. His [BIG SHOGUN] form would have him being in a giant suit of Samurai armor he stole from a fallen warrior.
"Some say there was a merchant that was so successful, he managed to get enough money and influence to live in the same places as the shogunate. But then... He started getting letters from an unknown person. They were helpful at first, making him even more successful, but eventually, they ruined him, leaving him with the clothes on his back, and nothing more. But when his colleagues looked at the writing in the letters... There was nothing but garbage scribbles."

"old folklore speaks of a strange Oni, who visited human settlements, selling increasingly strange wares, until one day a dark corruption spread through the land that caused many spirits to go insane. the old Oni was one of the least lucky, and instead of selling wares, the yo-kai rampaged entire villages in the blink of an eye, though they say if you placed a bucket filled with paper bills in the outskirts of your town, the next time he visits will be a pleasant one." "and it has to be Swedish currency, no other kind appeases him"
I can’t even imagine some Japanese villagers obtaining Swedish currency. Heck, Im imagining a ton just scratching their heads and wondering what the fuck is Swedish
@@vecipheragain Back when Japan had a ban on all foreigners, Sweden was the only exception. We're talking 1500s-1800s, here. That ban was removed when the US rolled up with gunboats and "politely requested" that the ban be abolished.
@@soraos21 given the circumstances, it was a surprisingly polite request. Still absolutely dangerous and rude, but polite by comparison to what could have happened.
You are such an amazing artist in more ways than one. Not only did you do a Japanese version of this song and have it sound awesome but you also did the art! And look at the detail! 10 out of 10 bravo!
God! Y’know, I know the music is supposed to take centre stage here, but MAN… the art is FIRE! The glasses, the sword, the smoke coming out of the mouth, the scarf, the hat… GAH! It’s all so GOOD!!😆
Funny thing is: In most eastern/japanese stories the rice farmers hat is worn by either the poorest or the most powerful who try to hide their powerlevel Spamton is BOTH of them and fits that role perfectly I can imagine him being a Tengu that is the goofiest and most serious/op at the same time
