Big Sky Triple-Black-Diamond Run: Hell's Half-Acre

A run down Hell's Half-Acre, an extremely demanding high-alpine run within Big Sky's Headwaters area. Reaching this line requires one of the most technical hikes we've done anywhere.
This run was recorded in February 2020. Thanks to recent snowfall and the lack of crowds up here, snow quality was outstanding.
Big Sky is a Montana ski resort located in the Northern Rockies near Yellowstone. See our full mountain review here: www.peakrankings.com/content/big-sky

For those watching this video, this is not a safe way to ski this terrain! Ski one at a time and do not stop in the slide path. You could be hit by snow, rock fall or by one of your friends if they fall. Also your group skied Hell Roaring. Hell's Half Acre is the next chute to looker's right.

Have you ever been down it? Just wondering.

@@lol-em6bjI have been down this run multiple times and this is 100% terrible alpine etiquette. All these skiers need to be educated on how to safely ski steep terrain.

Love the channel. It would be a little easier to watch if you held the text on the screen a bit longer. I find myself rewinding to get the commentary... testament to the engrossing nature of the footage I suppose.

Horrible stopping spots . Is more fun just to rip down. The hike isn't too bad, good views for sure & worth it

This is Hellroaring, not Hell's Half. The cliffy stuff that doesn't look skiable on the left side after the first pitch, that's Hell's Half.

this seemed painful on so many levels, and yeah, skiers all over the run, I suppose this might be good for slalom training?? It really is a spectacular mountain though

There a run in Big Sky called Gutterball, and though its not the longest run, it is the Skiing equivalent of being dropped podded from orbit in a planetary invasion. Just a single straight shot down with scary death rocks on both sides. Ive never been able to touch but Ive seen the videos of people who have and to me it literally just looks like guys jumping off the edge and forgetting they have skiis until they realize they arent dead 6 seconds later.

🤔😮😱🙏Awesome Job My Man. You Sounded Absolutely Winded After Skiing ⛷ Down That Insane Run! One ☝🏽 Self Has Got To Make Very Very Quick Sharp Turns and Be 100% Confidant In Your Skiing Abilities Not For The Faint Hearted. Hope that you went & Soaking In A Hot-tub After That Run! Get a pack that can hold your skies. Way worth it. Can get a good one for like 100 bucks. Inbounds or not... for terrain like this having a pack is key. You dont risk dropping any of your gear if you have a slip or fall and you basically have a free hand to use.

I echo the other posters here: I hope for your sake you will educate yourself about how to proceed safely through this kind of exposure before entering this kind of terrain again. For the sake of the safety of others, I hope you won't post more videos of yourself until you do.

Could you point out what he did wrong?
@1llski
@1llski 2 года назад
@@SCASM101 the primary error is that nobody is exercising any awareness of the terrain or others. Through dangerous terrain, you ALWAYS proceed one at a time, and yiu ALWAYS stop below an "island of safety", such as a rock outcrop or tree stand. This protects you from falling skiers, debris, or avalanches. Nobody did that here - they were all going at the same time, stopping wherever they pleased, and skiing above those stopped below them. That is just flat out dangerous. Finally, while it's hard to know the conditions exactly from the video, I think we can be sure that there was a fair bit of wind loading, which would elevate slide risk, making this even more important.
