It seems that contemplation becomes less in the culture we live in. People react so much which creates anxiety. I always felt this growing up and it has caused much strife in my life. Her calm mindfulness, as she says “staying awake,” is something to aspire to.

I like how you worded that. With anxiety being the itch to react ...Then depression being the lack of reaction or less of an itch to react Both of which can be done to a harmful extent

I think Adrianne Lenker is one of the best songwriters of our time. This is the first time I’ve seen an interview with her.. and I resonate with everything so hard. As a songwriter on the edge of deciding if I want to make my craft/my creative medium my career, I fear the connection I have to my soul will be compromised. The fear holds me back.. but i still want to share. Thank you Adrianne for articulating and sharing your thoughts.

@tess7510

@@thomaswhittaker4747 An extremely unexpected one. About six months after I wrote the comment above, I was a firm atheist, but willing to entertain the question of God because I had someone close to me tell me that they had met Jesus in person. I decided to say “Ok Jesus, if you’re real, I would like to meet you.” And much to my shock, Jesus Christ, God made fresh, actually revealed himself to me, and I have been following him ever since. Now I am the worship leader at my church and I sing to God because he gave me life, peace, and clarity when I once felt dead and fearful and confused. Best path I could have ever taken. Not even kidding! God is so amazing! He had a much better plan for me than I could ever planned for myself.

The first Big Thief song I ever heard was Shark Smile.. It was like 3am, was leaving work and heading back home listening to Sirius XMU. I was immediately all in, best new band I had heard for at least 2-3 years. Lyrics had me full out sobbing. Did a deep dive into their catalog/live performances on youtube and fell head over heels in love with them. Adrianne Lenker is honest to god one of the most brilliant and talented songwriters alive today, she's truly one of very few. So glad they're being recognized for how good they are.

Bonnie Hirtz “Mary” is also truly beautiful. I remember when I first heard that song I laid in my bed and listened to it in the dark three or four times in a row and just cried in stillness. I was in a 9 year relationship and they had been with someone else. The pain of losing can be so visceral, but listening to that song tapped into something I used to be and feel that was forgotten. Somehow you remember parts of yourself, like a taste or shoes you had in third grade. “Mary” recalls the innocence that still resides somewhere in your memory, in your heart. Sometimes a song burns and you’re immersed in the murky poetry of its world.

incredibly interesting and heartfelt interview. she is so calming to listen to, and i like the way she thinks so philosophically, and out of body. she also uses a lot of visual imagery in how she speaks and thinks, whereby she describes creativity as a river that she dips in and out of. also how creativity is like a landscape where you are initially fluid amongst it, but as you move through it, you harden and put up barriers to try to stop criticism or whatever it is that makes a person harden and become more enclosed. Overall, that was a really interesting interview to hear! Thank you to both of you and the band!

I love her so dearly, her music has guided me through so much in life. My mind has a habit of reminding me of past experiences and refusing to stop thinking about them, but so many of her songs can be used as analogies to those memories. Physics says that quantum data can be super posed among many simultaneous states, and that once measured, it becomes a single state, thus by measuring a thing, you change that thing. I think what she was getting at is that an artist has their original creative force, and the things that drive them, but those things become changed by success. And so by succeeding, much like measuring, you change, and the way you express yourself changes, and the way you see yourself changes. It can be difficult to hold onto your creative soul when you're constantly evolving and being constantly measured.

She seems uncomfortable, but I think it's a matter of her not relating to the "normal" world. To her, nothing is normal, and this lack of normality must be discomforting at times, or maybe even most of the time when she communicates with people. It's almost as if she's an alien attempting to make sense of a new world. She's a profound metaphysical philosopher and poet who searches for meaning in things most of us don't even notice or care about, especially through metaphors based in nature. The last two Big Thief albums are super-saturated with nature metaphors that give form to things that defy objective explanations. Metaphors are her mother-tongue, and she speaks it with stunning fluency. Fucking brilliant. I also didn't know a missing tooth could be so beautiful. I'd pull one of my own, but that would just make me look like someone punched me.

I really liked her analogy of one’s source of creativity being a heart that can grow hardened and buried by criticism. That’s something I’d definitely struggle with if my music got more attention. Also how she said that she makes her lyrics more generalized if they’re too specific about her own experiences was really useful. I have been thinking about writing lyrics but they don’t sound good and this is part of the reason why. It’s too specific and not leaving a lot of room for connections and varying interpretations. I’m trying to capture experiences in the lyrics but should lean more into the more universal feelings and themes.
