Honestly you should have just kept the fish. It will not survive considering the way you handled it. Sad but you have a lot to learn about being a true sportsman young man.

@@RU-vidBuckTracker after reading some comments I will agree that the fish wasn’t handled perfectly but the people saying it won’t survive I don’t agree with. There was no blood in the water when you were reviving it so more than likely no damage to the gills and the fish eventually swam away with plenty of power. Everything I saw points to that fish being just fine and doing it’s thing long after the release. I enjoyed the video and congratulations on an awesome native vermont brown. (By native I mean not placed in the stream by Fish trucks and has lived in that stream since birth so anyone pointing out that browns were introduced into vermont in the 1800’s can go suck a wet rag. Thanks)

@@TeamTrackersHe basically wiped the protective slime off the fish. Also bending the mandible like he was can break or do serious harm to its feeding ability.

That was a beautiful fish. Too bad that you probably killed it. Never, ever, ever stick your fingers up thru their gills and never keep them out of the water for that long. Just because he swam off doesn't mean he survived your amateurish handling. Think about the fishermen that come after you.

There’ NO WAY that trout survived that episode. You kept it out of the water for 2 minutes after fighting it for prob 10 minutes. Get a net.

1. Keep the fish in the water to snap your pic then let it go. 2. Better yet don’t bother with a pic. Just let em go and enjoy the memories.

I read the comments that criticized how you mishandled the fish by putting your fingers through the gills and by keeping it out of the water for as long as you did. I also read your reply that there was no blood and the fish swam away under its own power. Years ago, as a guide in the Bristol Bay drainages of Alaska, I help produce a film for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on how to handle and release fish. One of the issues is preventing loss of slime. It protects the fish from waterborne fungus. That is why you should wet your hands before handling a fish you intend to release. The more or the longer you handle a fish, the greater the chances of removing it slime.

If you love trout fishing, and want to keep fishing your favorite spots for years to come, then you need to learn how to handle the fish better -dont grab the gills -wet your hands before holding -keep them in the water as long as possible and off the ground -pinch the barbs on your hooks -try to keep fights short, lactic acid build up over long fights and kill the fish even after they swim away

I have been fishing Vermont since I was a kid and have lived here my whole life and the fish are bouncing back from 20 years of depleting species .Whenever I can I put them back but in many cases they will not service. If you catch a fish and it’s bleeding it will die,if you catch one that swallows the hook to deep to get it out it’s best to keep and eat them. You can cut the hook off and leave it in them some big ones can survive it but the small ones most likely do not. If you take them out of the water and handle them to much they lose the outer membrane on there skin and it kills them. Trout are very fragile. I like keeping one huge trout per year of each trout species. One brown one rainbow and one brook trout and only the biggest ones for a once a year fish fry with family and friends as a reason to come together. There beat when smoked or just cooked in butter salt and pepper. I will keep the ones I catch alive until the end of the day if I’m going to keep one then choose the biggest one and always keep the ones that can’t service. One day last season in one day caught a 14 in 16in and 22 in brown and had to keep the biggest one then for the rest of the summer released every brown eye caught which was at least 50 of them. One week after Vermont flooded last year I got another huge 3-4 pound brown and let it go. I have one spot I fish that I found out about when I was 12 years old and I’m the only person that I ever see fishing it and it’s a small goarge loaded with monsters and a full mile of huge holes one after the other and I tell no one about it.

I would have liked to see a better response to some good advice in the comments. It takes time to learn some stuff. Instead of being combative, work to take the advice and help preserve your own, as you say, favorite fishery. That really was a gorgeous fish and it would've been nice to visit him again

I’ve caught multiple fish numerous times I can tell by the markings in the photos I’ve taken. Holding a trout by the gill plate does not kill the fish. I’ve been trout fishing my entire life. Making sure the fish has enough strength to swim off when releasing is key I think.

@@RU-vidBuckTracker That is where the confusion lies. 100%? no. But gilling the fish DOES kill the fish. the fish swimming away cant be anyones measuring stick because the fish is showing a reaction to get away from the immediate threat (you) as fast as possible. In reality, that fish will struggle to regain its oxygen level and die slowly without you ever seeing it. In this video, its the gilling, the shear amount of time that you kept it out of the water, the aggressive handling and at the end, the pushing and pulling of the water (which does nothing, you should set the fish in current) that is the demise of this fish. Like I said it's a gorgeous fish but the things that you mentioned have been proven unequivocally a long time ago and I'd just like to see a bit of an open mind to learn. is a beautiful spot though

@@garymorin1931 Spot on. Just because a fish has enough energy left to swim off does not mean that he doesn't go belly up an hour or less later.

@@RU-vidBuckTracker never touch any fish by the gill plate. Just by your hands not being soaked first it can peal off oils that help protect the fish. Ive had fish die handling much more gently than that. You should get a net that safe for trout and take pics in the water. You handled it like a bass. This is not bass fishing, these fish need to be protected. Awesome fish.

Not sure but I wanted to let you know to set your drag. Nice fish! I tie on a hook or lure, then loop the hook into my truck bumper and lightly lift the rod holding it stright out and tighten the drag just until you can feel the backbone of the rod flex. Right beyond the last rod guide toward handle. Thats the best method. You can exhaust trout easily especially river trout who have to recover in a strong current.

Hi, Izaak. I just discovered your channel and watched three of your videos. In my opinion, there's GREAT potential in your work, and I hope you aren't discouraged that you don't have thousands of subscribers already. Your footage is straightforward, and your narration is honest and minimal-both factors strongly in your favor. Few serious hunters and fishermen want to hear loud background music and lots of talking in the woods. A couple of suggestions: Edit a bit more "tightly." For example, in this trout video, we don't need to hear your understandably enthusiastic "C'mon, baby!" a hundred times. I also think that part (not all) of the "tackle talk" belongs at the beginning of the video, when you first leave the truck. Describing the rod and the bait you've chosen for this tricky brook fishing would also have been helpful. Everyone fishes differently, but in your next video, you might also consider not reeling against the drag and not putting your fingers through the fish's gills before releasing it. Those actions would have been difficult to edit out. Most of all, however, I think you might consider enhancing your videos with some overlaid descriptive text and/or overlaid after-the-fact audio. Such additions-if not overdone!-tend to make good use of footage in which little is happening. I hope very much that you'll see my comments as encouragement and support. I'll be watching for your next releases!

I was born and raised in Windsor, Vermont, graduated high school in 1965, I left Vermont at age 19. I’ve seen some Hugh browns in the Brownsville brook and a small brook in Reading, Vermont. I used to walk miles of brook fishing for browns and brook trout in Windsor. I used to deer hunt Windsor an the Hartland area, started deer hunting in 1958 at age 11, still hunting here in Southwest Indiana at age 73, it’s in my blood, I know you understand that !
