Following up on Scott’s story about Doc’s bad eyesight, one spring day in the late 70s when the inside waves off Ortega Street were 2 or 3 feet overhead, Doc paddles out and says to me “let’s go try those outside sandbars.” … these are the waves that form because the sand has been pulled off shore about a quarter mile -so - what the heck - I go paddling out there with him many many hundreds of yards outside the rest of the guys and then Doc turns to me when we get way out there (not knowing where the next shifting peak is gonna break) and tells me, “my eyes aren’t that good could you let me know when a set is coming?”😮

I lived and surfed Ocean Beach Pretty hard-core from 78 to 90 while attending Lowell high school off Sloat Street and later UCSF where dock also went I think... He was older than us, and by a good decade and had a green van ,paddled out in some of the biggest days that we would not... So I have a lot of respect for his large cojones... His nickname given by Chris Paulsen probably the best young local surfer the time and a local born raised was Doc Hazard because his eyesight was not great and he almost ran over Chris at Fort Point one day...... Ocean Beach was once a uncrowded gem For nine months a year... Still surfing but warmer waters...
