Thanks, Don't surf. Don't even swim. Best surf video I've seen since I watched Endless Summer 50 years ago. Love the wave sounds. And the commentary and the audience helps me to understand whats going on. Now I understand in Apocalypse Now, when the guy says, "It's got a great break, both left and right." Please more videos like this. When I watch, it simultaneously gets my blood going and calms the mind at the same time. If that makes sense at all :-) Visiting Jaws is now on my bucket list.

Yeah...but once they get on a wave...they can not do anything with it. I am sorry, but I just do not get the infatuation with catching a wave on board that guarantees the ride will suck. Just go in a straight line and hope you can outrun the wave. Bleh...

There was a friggen boogie board out there! I love that! He kinda got stuck on the far left of the screen but he still got some rides! That's so cool. Never thought I'd ever see a boogie boarder ride a wave like that

I lived in Kehei Maui when I was 15 to 17 yrs old. Boogie boards was all me and my brother rode. We arrived in Maui in February at the height of their big wave season.

It must be absolutely miserable if you have to straighten out on bombs like these. You have so much speed you get ahead of the wave. You know your gonna slow down drastically just as that 20 foot plus wall of whitewater plows into you. It's a brutal collision and you now are being pushed in while tumbling underwater and the whitewater is so bubbly you don't get great floatation. Only thing scarier would be if there's rocks close by. Just like Mavericks

good eye alexander. yes you are correct. experienced riders evolved to pull da first cord right before they go down depending on where on the wave he is. especially here in the impact zone. it helps so that the wave doesnt push him down as much but sets himself up to take more pressure from above. it also helps so that the rider doesnt blow an ear drum when the wave pushes him down deep n fast. great question. aloha & malama o ke kai

How long can you hold your breath? I can stand only less than 10 seconds. Do they have a specific gear , so that breath under water ?

most people can hold their breathe for longer but they just never really had to. you will hold yor breathe for longer than 10 secs if you have to. these guys practice holding their breathe in training and do not use any help to breathe when surfing/wipeouts. aloha

You should try some free diving to expand your breath hold. Also, run wind sprints holding your breath (anaerobic conditioning). I would run a football field ten times with 15 second breaks. But if you become lightheaded STOP! Work up to it.

How these guys going out of the barrel if they come in?? I know by self if you get in a barrel of a 2m wave sometimes you have problems to come up for breathing...

Great video! Quite a few of these rides the guy was too far back on his board which set up a lot of chatter making the ride more difficult. I would think most of these guys have as much skill as balls although I don't know. I am glad to see big wave riding made a resurgence. For context, until the mid- to late- 1990s, there were very few big wave riders. Now there are many.

Watching these videos are amazing but I’d never have the balls to take on a wave this big, I get absolutely wiped out and battered by a 3 metre wave at the beach Hahahah, can anyone please explain to me how so many of these guys get absolutely wiped out by these monstrous waves and no fatalities occur?? How do these guys survive these waves and go back for more right after ?? Someone please explain in genuinely intrigued

its just water but a lot of water & thrashing. impact vests & flotation devices help. one wave hold down is enough but if you fall in the wrong place it can be a 2 wave hold down which gets scarier. no deaths at jaws. early days when no impact vests or flotation devices, the worse case was dislocated shoulders because the force of the wipeout would pull arms like a rag doll. great questions. aloha

In big waves I would intentionally go over the falls straight away. That way I got the fear done with, thinking if that's as bad as it could get.... That freed me to enjoy the rest of the session.

nope. not many sharks here. its proper name is peahi, which means "beacon" and jaws because of the monster lip on each wave that chases surfers to eat them up. aloha
