got some McDonalds and went on a little country cruise with my wife tonight to a new public hunting place that i scouted a few weeks ago to see if i could see any deer out ...... then came home, looked at my stand and Beast sticks and checked if you had any new videos and here i am !!!!!
Dan this series has been great, my bro in law's and I go over to northwestern Wisconsin every fall for a public land bow hunt and that big woods stuff can be tricky, thanks for the insight!!!!
I bought all the videos 2 years ago and I'm still happy that these are available on RU-vid - Still worth the money by far. I saw more deer and more big bucks on public last year than the previous 5 years combined... and I had 18 years of hunting in 4 states in my back pocket at the time. Not kidding. Great Info
This spring I’ve located great buck bedding in small openings in big woods of what I can easily describe as wet marsh grass type opening surrounded by hardwoods, a “thermal hub”. I really had the wow factor there, there’s almost no way to get close without getting busted but I believe I found 1 or 2 trees around there where I could slip in and get close to maybe get a shot. Thank you Hunting Beast crew for all the great videos and information you guys put out and the great platform you host for all us hanyacks to talk about the rutiful so beautiful whitetail deer!
B4 i found you, i always thought Transitions were eyeglasses. You have been a godsend to the hunting community. Wish you were available to me when i was younger. At 62, it's difficult to practice all you preach! My legs tire quickly. But i can still hunt! I still love to learn from you. Truly you are a Beast!
Awesome content. What do you do if an area has an insane amount of transition. Elevation change, shrubs swamps, open pockets, pines. It has it all and changes from 20 yards to the next. I've got some of the biggest bucks ever on camera. How do you hunt an area where the deer seem to just be EVERYWHERE?.
It can add to the challenge for sure, but the big bucks will still prefer certain spots over others and as a scouting detective you need to find out which ones those are.
Dan, wish i had you here in Michigan this season, been hunting a buck for a few years, his bedding area seems to be un huntable, ive always considered myself a good hunter, but this deer evades me, giant public land tract....
Thanks Dan. Appreciate the extra. I have two bucks I've been hunting for over 2 years. One's a dominant, the others the subordinate. 10 and eight respectively. Seems they made it through the season last year. Same size as I saw them originally, just more mass last year. Found one of their major bedding areas. Looks like early to mid-season bedding. How close is too close, or how far is too far? As far as setting up to get a poke at one of them? No trees except for one they have a bed under. Thicket type stuff. Clear cut area five years ago. Tree line does start again 75 yd back or so. Guess I'm just wondering how close or far away from their bedding, are you setting up?🤷
My determination on distance of set up varys. Its determined by the following statement: as close as I can. I set up on the exit trail at the 1st spot that is out of sight , sound, or smell... As close as possible

Dan what was the moment or time when you really changed your hunting strategys and started looking for buck beds and really learning all the things you have. Like did you gave an aha moment or did it just naturally progress
When I was young, and had no mentors to tell me I was wrong, I naturally started moving towards bedding. After all every time I saw a buck in daylight he was either coming out, or going into bedding, and even at an early age I could see my odds increased as I got closer to bedding. However, it was really a turning point when a big buck that had taken over my hunting area in the mid 80's consumed my every thought... after a couple seasons of failure trying desperately to kill him, I made it a goal to learn that bucks every bedroom in the spring and hunt him down the next fall... I finally killed that buck back in 1989, and it was indeed a turning point.
In big woods, how far will mature bucks travel for food on a nightly basis? I have an area I'm scouting and the closest agricultural field is 3 miles away. Should I be looking for smaller food sources within the big woods for the deer's main source of food? I already have some key edges and possible bedding locations targeted, I'm just curious about a food source. Thanks for all the awesome videos, love your channel!!!
Your going to find that bucks eat a lot more than crops, and may be eating right where you find them on leaves and browse... We will get into that in some of the upcoming video chapters...
Dan I have been behind everything you have done the amount of thought process we have in common is crazy but the area I hunt is almost impossible to hunt the wind I live in southern md the bay on one side the river on the other the ocean in front and random hills and elevation I try to hunt as fare chase as possible without using a bunch of extra stuff for an advantage i am having a really hard time getting on big deer here not elsewhere we really do have some cool hunts here if your interested we have sika deer on the eastern shore I’m on the western shore lots of giants have been taken in this area but it’s not easy on public with a bow
Hi Mike, I know a guy who kills some giants by you... I have areas with tricky winds too. The real key is to learn the thermals, despite the swirls, often certain spots will have thermal air currents that kick in a certain direction on most evenings.
I snuck in on a cross wind on a no e 2 year old 8 point wind was to his back while he was tucked up against a log looking down wind I came down the ridge slightly behind him on a scout and hunt on very open hardwoods with lots of downed timber in the bottom. I was not expecting deer there but I hunt 3000 acres of pressure. He was forced into that open spot behind a dead tree. I kicked up at Bout 40 yards he never smelled me once he jumped ran about 60 and stopped and looked behind himself at what the noise was I was behind a tree already not moving what he did was walk on a angle up the bench system crossing the wind trying to smell me out. I didn't see him again. I will be going back to that spot next year and setting up on it with the same exact wind again. October. I'll be doing a milkweed sit some time in August if I get a NW wind
I'm in South Carolina I hunt a lot marsh areas But a lot of issues is until December we have to deal with gator's and Cotton mouths and that stuff which could be very tricky Scouting hunting and and recovering deer in those situations But that is where a lot of the good deer are With the temperatures being so high and the humidity usually you're soaking wet by the time you get to your stand stand or Up in the tree So sent control Other than hunting the wind which I do the best that I can Some days is next to impossible With the wind changing constantly Do you have any suggestions to help keep sitting down or would you recommend Stay in out of these places until till temps are better so you don't I believe such a presence in the woods and the woods with your scent
Even though you sweat, and the heat gets nasty. I dont think it makes much a difference to deer smelling you. If they get down wind, or cross your trail they smell you... There are spots that big bucks hang early, and spots they hang in rut, and spots they hang in late season... Not hunting those spots is not going to put more deer on your wall. Just play the wind and deal with what mother nature throws at you.
Dan When your in an area that doesn’t have traditional transitions like a hill side would I use level lines or tops lines as transition similar to how guys use elevation lines to hunt elk..I think transition and or elevation lines topo lines work hand n hand what are your thoughts
Rubs are a clue... Often early season beds, or late season bedding areas will have no rubs, but beds from the period at the end of Oct or early November will... Rubs are nice for confidence, but in reality are bot always present.
When is the best time to scout and not spook anything out of the area? Or does scouting not usually affect deer, some spots I’m almost scared to scout because I know deer are in there and I don’t want them to be spooked out of the area.
Hunting really is that simple. Find the sign hunt the sign. It does more indepth then just that but you have to hunt not just sit. Find fresh sign and follow that sign until you see it transitioning into bedding or food. Hunt the sign. You have to think like a deer and move like a predator. Don't just hunt a rub that's fresh or whatever there has to be multiple reason to hunt it. Is it a rub learning doe bedding? Is it a rub on a food source? Is it a rub in open timber? Don't hunt a rub that was night time.
It was a cross wind from the south, the deer is coming from the South/west.... The deer crossed my ground scent, then spotted me in the tree. But my air born scent never hit him.
@@thehuntingbeast thanks. I'm hunting some very defined edge habitat, so I was curious what wind is the best for this situation during the rut. I'm guessing blowing from the thick to the open, so cruising bucks can smell what's in the thick and see what's in the open.
