@@OfficialBillC How Bad Can I Be isn't much shorter and the 5 minutes include a dialogue break. If length was the reason they wouldn't have changed the tone so drastically.
yeah, 'how bad can i be?' makes it look like the doesn't know what he's doing and is oblivious to the damage he will cause. but in reality he knew damn well what he would have to do to get big. that's honestly a great lil thingy you did
"If the customers are buying and the money is multiplying and the PR people lying and the lawyers are denying, who cares if, SOME THINGS ARE DYING! I DON'T WANNA HEAR YOUR CRYING! This is all so gratifying!" That is art right there
I like "How bad can it be", but after listening to "Biggering" about four times, this song would have been just a bit better to send the message and get it straight. It's something about those last four to five lines that really sets the record straight.
@@emberhermin52 yes, its just the tone between the two, in my opinion that changes. "How bad can I be" version feels a bit out of place, and forced while "Biggering" has it flow from one to another and ends it off with who cares if somethings are dying, instead of who cares if a few trees are dying. That's why I like "Biggerings" meaning a bit more, because it reflects not only the death of trees but the death of more than that. Just changing some words around or changing the tone of how something was said, can change the meaning of a whole sentence.
@@emberhermin52 not all of them. In one line, a small word change makes a bigger impact. How bad can i be: who cares if a few trees are dying Biggering: who cares if some *things* are dying
How Bad Can I Be: “Who cares if a few *trees* are dying.” Biggering: “Who cares if a some *things* are dying.” He acknowledges that it’s not just trees dying, but also animals, and maybe even humans. I mean, with all of the pollution, it could kill a person who had pre-existing lung issues. And the fact that he uses the word, “things,” he’s saying he doesn’t view the animals and people who are dying as animate, alive, conscious beings, he sees them as things, and it doesn’t matter if they die.

this is... actually a really good song and the message goes across so bluntly and clearly. it's a shame it isn't used in the movie bc of a certain corporation trying to keep their image.
In my opinion, this song perfectly captures who the Once-ler is supposed to be, in the original book and TV special, he was basically a representation of soulless corporations, hence why we don’t see his face, but in the 2012 adaptation he is instead humanised and presented as a underdog who rose to the top, but went too crazy with power and ended up destroying a entire Valley of trees, especially in ‘How bad can I be?’. But in ‘Biggering’, he is basically this sociopathic and unhinged businessman who only cares about nothing but his company and thneed, too bad illumination thought this song was too “Edgy” and “Dark” for the kids, and ended up scrapping it and went for a song that spreads like a disease Edit: mom I’m famous 😎
TBH, it would have been cool if Illumination decided to make the Once-ler to go from his personality from the final product of the movie slowly to the Once-ler in this song because that is how most companies end up. They usually start out of passion, however, once the money flows in, the get greedy. This is the same route companies like Illumination went down. Probably why they didn't use this song.
I’m surprised Illumination had enough self-awareness to not use this song But man this song slaps hard, it takes everything How Bad Could I Be had and cranks it up to 10
pretty sure how bad can i be was a replacement for biggering, so i guess they just decided to make some lyrics from this more lighthearted and put them in how bad can i be
3:04 this segment is kinda under rated. It’s not just saying “this one CEO is evil it’s his personal choice to be evil”. Which is what the final song implies. This is specifically a condemnation of the nature of competition in the market which is itself a condemnation of the entire capitalist system. No wonder it was cut
I hope the first draft of this movie was going to be more serious and they weren't going to put a serious rock opera song in the middle of a goofy kids movie that doesn't take itself seriously.
@@Joseph_Drew_III A humble American looking in on your country after seeing it pulling the same union crushing bullshit I've grown so accustomed to in the States, I gotta ask... is that still as far as you can tell? Its a capitalism problem, it always has been, and even the best of the best (hardly where I'd place Canada) still only function off the backs of the global south--benefiting from slavery, child labor, and some of the most torturous working conditions imaginable to keep things as spick-and-span as they seem from the inside. All for what, exactly? A bigger office, a bigger chair. A bigger hat to wear. Who cares if some people are dying?
I love the Lorax's dialogue in between; it's a very hard (but real) lesson we as a society need to accept; that greed is a ravenous animal and Pride is the equivalent of a tapeworm.
He means Greed is like a animal, Like he said, "It's one that always needs to feed, but is never satisfied." Meaning it is always hungry for more. Greed is even one of the 7 deadly sins! you need to feed it and feed it and it is never full. it ALWAYS needs MORE. Pride, witch is the "Nasty little worm" according to the Lorax, is different. I can interpret the line "The more you try to find it, The more it likes to hide" in 2 different ways: 1. The Lorax is refering to the idea that Greed is hiding a worm (Pride) 2. He also could be refering to Greed who is the Hider.
@@noobboi1688 I know, I was saying that Pride is a tapeworm because it makes you never satisfied, but upon closer inspection, tapeworms do the opposite. I was really comparing greed to an animal and that pride is like a parasite that makes it never satisfied
I think he means that greed is natural. It does what it does, and you can't expect else. But pride is the real evil here, it's unnatural. To be greedy is human. But to be proud of your own greed is evil. I think that's the message.
This song being cut breaks my heart because it shows that there are (or were) people working at illumination who wanted to tell good, compelling stories. The first Despicable Me was incredibly charming and the Lorax clearly had the potential to become a dark and poignant movie about the dangers of corporate greed. But it’s clear the higher up don’t care and never will. Like the song says, art doesn’t matter when you have to keep biggering.
It breaks my heart to see that there were people who wanted to give the message and more to see that the film had enough potential to be a dark and moving film that shows us about the greed of companies this film would have become a masterpiece
I love how some of the lyrics in this song actually made it into “How Bad Can I Be?” Such as “It’s a principle of nature,” or “the people keep on buying, and the money’s multiplying, and the PR people lying”
@@saajiddaya2152 Personally, while I prefer “Biggering” like everyone else, I actually find “How Bad Can I Be?” to be rather catchy. Just my personal opinion.
@@countrycoffeecup7772 same here, I prefer biggering because it sends out an actual message, and I also like rock/punk related stuff, and you can sing a song like this with more motivation, unlike “how bad can I be” because you can sing it normally, like humming or something, but “How bad can I be” Is also very good, I find it catchy as well, I also like how light-hearted it sounds compared to the actual movie message itself.
I love the difference between “who cares if a few *trees* are dying” and “who cares if some *things* are dying”, while the first one is made to seem more harmless but still have impact the second one gives off the vibes of more then just trees, animals, family bonds, friendships, it’s a lot more accurate to real big business owners Overall sucks they didn’t use this song in the movie
They should have used this song and i am and will be enterally salty about them not using this because they know they'd be called on their bs if they used this song
I think the reason they didn't use it, is because it calls out illumination on their bs. The song is literally talking about how awful companies keep doing awful things because the people are buying it and feeding on it wanting more and more from them.
@Rydin_Gaming I actually just fucking hate it when people go "oMg!1!! i lOvEd iT wHeN dReaM sAiD "iTs dReAmIng tImE!1!"" like actually nobody finds it funny anymore, they're just backing the people up by "let the man do whatever they want" or "then why did you comment" I WANT TO EXPRESS MY OPINION ABOUT THESE STUPID COMMENTS LIKE THEY CAN EASILY JUST MAKE A FULLY PARALYZED PERSON MOVE JUST SO THEY CAN SAY "fuck you" IT'S ANNOYING
2:15 I think it was a pretty interesting choice to have the heart of the song being not about the consequences of the Once-ler's actions or "Biggering" but the root of it. The song says that greed in itself is not the problem, "You really can't blame greed", but at the core of greed is, infact, pride. Once-ler is so prideful in himself, his business, his actions that he's ignoring any harmful results outside of himself. The song is suggesting that pride is easily overlooked which is why the Lorax annunciates "See, now THAT's why you're biggering". It also suggests that he's reached a point that the need for success and the goodness he feels from it, from pride, is more dangerous and more destructive than what the coating of greed is causing or more importantly, while his greed needs to be reigned in, his pride is a far bigger monster that needs to be handled first. There's a lot you can debate which is more devastating in this particular situation, pride or greed, but I think its an interesting point to bring up. Even more so that the thing that lurks under greed is brought up around the middle point, the center of the song that supposedly is about greed. The Once-ler sings about greed and not pride, the Lorax brings up pride and instead of reflecting on it, the Once-ler returns to greed, confirming that pride is indeed harder to contend with for the Once-ler.
@@fatimameme well, that's actually a good point, in the original Lorax, though more like the 1972 special, the onceler was just a flawed human being who was greedy and shortsighted, he even had a moment if wanting to shut his factory down once he saw the destruction, but the mention of the stocks increase made him keep going, so it's more about human greed for the original lorax But tbh, in this one with the pride thing, it really cuts far deeper than even what Dr seuss made
I always get chills during every time a line from how bad can I be plays. I’m so used to hearing it in a lighthearted context that it’s a little unsettling when it’s used in a more dark context
Ok so from that one video I managed to comment before it got deleted, I said that I could imagine the Once-ler having to hear from the Lorax constantly while he was biggering his company that at some point, he would be constantly annoyed between hearing the Lorax and disagreeing with what he has to say and also the Once-ler himself wanting to make things different since he somewhat recognizes that he is making the environment worse. I'd like to think that if this were animated, the Once-ler would be so caught up with his frustrations between both sides that he would slam a desk or something that has a cup full of coffee. As the camera zooms in on the spilling coffee, it would somehow transform into oil and we would get a shot of oil spilling throughout the Truffula forest, like a transition. I don't know just wanted to repost what I had said before.
4:22 i can imagine a shot of one of those animatics in which the Onceler being surrounded by his glory and millions of dollars, covers his ears all overwhelmed so not to hear the cries of the chaos that caused his dream shouting to himself "I don't wanna hear you crying!"
@@PureCurebyFaith yeah something like that too, like.. him covering his ears with a smile on his face but martyrdom in his eyes, because of being satisfied with the success but deep down aware of the great damage it sounded cool in my mind
i imagined a look out of his open-plan office, the river being black, the sky being dark, only a few trees left, and the birds flying away. he is proud at the sight, saying “WHO CARES IF SOME THINGS ARE DYING?” he hears a knock on the door, and he assumes immediately that it is the lorax (it can or can’t be, really, it could just be some annoyed employee) and he covers his ears at the knocking for a bit, overwhelmed, yelling “I DON’T WANNA HEAR YOU CRYING!” as the lorax coming back is a reminder of what he’s doing is wrong. halfway through, he uncovers his ears and he has the look of pure fury on his face. if the person at the door was an employee, they would run away, terrified at the once-ler’s look. or if it was the lorax, he would open the door regardless of whether the once-ler let him in or not, and stand there in silence as they both look at the destruction the once-ler caused until the song ends and the last tree is chopped down.
I have a feeling that this film was probably originally way different than how it ended up being. Probably closer to the book and much, *much* better overall. Somewhere along the line, Illumination definitely interfered with development and after that the writers stopped caring. It makes me sad to think about the film we could've had vs what we got.
Well, I think the song was supposed to have some aid there since cut song and all that, but the jist of it os what the comment above said, he knows it, lorax calls him out on it then he confirms he simply don't care at that point.
the point of the lorax's verse is to convey that it's not greed that's triggering more biggering, it's pride. yes, greed is what caused the start of the once-ler's consequential actions, but pride is what was pushing him to go further
This song is way more fitting than 'how bad can I be' because in the finished movie, the once ler is almost a victim, he's played off as ignorant to the mayhem he's causing. Meanwhile in Biggering, he knows good and well what he's doing, he simply doesn't care. EDIT: There's also the line "who cares if some things are dying" VS ''who cares if a few tree's are dying. With the former, its more than the trees being harmed, and it's more than just a few.
Honestly, I could see this song coming after "How Bad Can I Be" especially since it uses the same or different iterations of verses from the first song. Like place it sometime after HBCIB and make it seem like it's the moment where the character realizes what he's done and repents, but instead just keeps going and gets consumed by their own greed. Honestly, even tho it's a demo, I would love a Lorax musical that stays true to the original message of the book while giving it this level of quality when it comes to the music and lyrics. That would be tight!
Oooh, I like the idea of "Biggering" being used as a dark reprise of "How Bad Can I Be?" Like, imagine in that song, he genuinely doesn't realize the long-term harm he's doing, because he can see immediate results. But then, his desire for *better* results grows, like an addiction; he has to get more to get the same high. He stops caring about *any* possible repercussions in the process, and *that's* when we get "Biggering".
Realistically, in the universe where the Biggering cut was the final release, people would probably be praising the movie to this day and being glad the “How Bad Can I Be cut” (our final release) wasn’t their final cut
This deep song that accurately represents the Onceler was cut from the film, and was replaced with a cheesy, generic villain song that happens to be memed to hell.
This is incredible, I almost can't believe that it made it as far as a demo with how against the message Illumination were. Imagine how good this would sound as a finished song 🔥🔥
2:00 this is an absolute masterpiece, the lorax's speech, the oncler's background vocals hitting high notes, the chorus, and the absolute banger of an instrumental, all combined to create one of the best parts in this song!
@@alexboehmer6888 I think it’s cuz of a corporation making a movie about how corporations are terrible and that song is “too dark” cuz it shows the real truth

@@nostalgiaguy3902 Apparently the original draft of this movie was going to be much darker and closer to the book. Ted was not a simp he was a greedy and materialistic spoiled child who only wanted a tree to show off to others, Thneedville was going to be a polluted city (in fact there is a demo song that is very dark than from the movie) the personality of eleven -ler that in this version Hiba have a much darker personality and nothing like the same as the 72 movie. And the biggering song proves it and the lorax was more serious this and more the original songs that tell you that the writers were going to be a realistic movie with a raw message that is what I understand
imagine writing one of the best songs in film history and then being told 'no it's too realistic' and having it be replaced by the corprate thing in history
I love how they had every verb in the English dictionary to rime with “biggering” but they still choose biggering to rime with biggering (And figuring every once in a while)
Once you're biggering, all you think about it triggering more biggering. i think that's why they chose it, it's so it can nail that concept on your head repeteadly.
The most apparent difference between How Bad Can I Be and Biggering was that HBCIB is a song you can mumble while you do the dishes while Biggering is a song where you feel the urge to belt out the lyrics with all the bravado of an opera singer.
And if the customers are buyin', and the money multiplyin'!! And the PR people lyin', and the lawyers are denyin'!! Who cares if some things are *dyin'?!* I don't wanna hear you *cryin'!!* This is all so gratifyiiiinnn'!!!!! Pure art.

" *I DON'T WANNA HEAR YOUR CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIING!!!!!* " - I'm tired of your excuses and arguments. What you say or what you want doesn't matter. What I want is what's happening. End of story. " *_THIS IS ALL SO GRATIFYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!_* " - Once-ler + any corporate tyrant lost in the high of their newfound power. Lost to everything that isn't themselves. Lost to the machine.
This song would of taught many kids of corprate greed and the consumerism our planet has evolved to, this song would not of fixed the movie but it could of been better for the oncler, showing how he knew what he was doing and how it would affect many animals and other plants to come, but because it was a mixed message the song was switched to "How bad can I be" in which the oncler did not know of the those affects, why well, 1) the producers called it too "dark" and all to "real" and 2) because illumination is a corporation and the song is talking about the impact of those corporations.
Illumination was the reason this failed. They were one of the corporations that the song was explaining in detail. Maybe if it was a different company, it would actually feel like the Lorax.
Honestly, this may be an unpopular opinion but the song they went with makes me want to claw my ears off and this is just soo much better it's completely rediculous
honestly, if you tweaked "how bad can i be" so that the onceler's entire character arc doesn't happen during it, then i think both songs could've been in the movie. hbcib couldve been the song representing the start of the onceler's career and his greed increasing as he starts growing his company and producing thneeds, and then once the thneeds get really popular and the onceler becomes rich, biggering gets played as a sort of reprise to hbcib, representing that he started out as a normal guy and was pushed to the edge by his obsession with money and fame, destroying the environment in the process. i don't know if this is actually a good idea or if its just a product of my love for movie/musical song reprises, but i just think it sounds cool in theory lmao
I may be 2 months late to the party, but I think that this would be a great idea. Not only would it be more appropriate to the theme, but it would also make for an interesting character study for the onceler. Not only that, But to add on to your idea, what if in between, the onceler actually had a conflict with himself, with one half saying this is wrong to the other who is appealing to the onceler's pleasure, telling him that this is exactly what he wanted? After that, the onceler would still have an argument with the lorax, and this song would play as the onceler makes his point that he still wants to keep biggering.
Agreed 100% How Bad Can I Be could have also been shown as like, a way to signify the big rift in the Lorax and the Onceler, with the Onceler starting off with trying to convince himself that he isn't a baddie. That he's genuinely a good guy just following his dream. But then... he realizes something. He doesn't have to believe it. Only other people need to. Which then devolves in him doing worse and worse things because, well, nobodies going to stop him? He's just a man following his dreams after all.
If illumination used this song I would've respected them a whole lot. This song is like DreamWorks Moses movie or the hunchback of notre Dom. It would've been a well respected movie if the stuff they cut weren't cut and fixed a bit with the story
Probably one of my favorite differences about both songs is that in “How Bad Can I Be?” The Onceler says ”Who cares if some trees are dying?” Whereas in “Biggering” he says “Who cares if some THINGS are dying?” The difference being that the Onceler in the cut version is far more aware of his actions than he was in “How Bad Can I Be?” and is fully aware that it isn’t just trees that are dying from what he is doing.
Not only that but he also says "and the PR people are lying, and the lawyers are denying" so not only is he aware of the damage he is doing he's actively trying suppress and cover it all up.
@@E_2the_mma tbf, he says that in hbcib too. But, ig it's js different with "hbcib" he can still claime ignorance, but with "biggering" absolutely can not

Why no one talks how great this song is from the side of vocals? Really, Once-Ler's voiceactor has an amazing vocal skills, which we couldn't hear in "how bad can I be".
In a perfect world we could have had How bad can I be and Biggering. This could have been made to show how the Once-ler changes from thinking "I'm not bad" to "I don't care that I'm bad"
I'd imagine this song wouldn't take place as soon as the onceler begins his decent his fall into corporate devil hood, but actually after he has built the first factory and thneed production is rising. At the start of this song, he is looking back on his small beginnings and how he started with a small little cottage and that he needs all these *_bigger_* items and that he is *_biggering_* when we reach the "good part" of this song, he is a massive company, his ego, pride and greed has taken him, and he needs to continue *_biggering_* even if he knows some things are dying. So yeah I think the first part takes place after the first factory was done, then the other half is when he is *_biggering_* his factories and has fully fallen to corporate devilhood, what a true villain should be.
The choir in the back just puts this whole thing together perfectly tbh 😻😻 also his singing is literally bomb, the "dying" part had my heart 😋😋🔥🔥💯💯‼️‼️
I love the explanation on how greed is a little pet with a worm called pride, it is just the perfect example, along with the lines that the biggering is triggering more biggering, it’s SUCH a true and blunt statement. I’m glad they released this demo
i love how he says "who cares if some things are dying" instead of the original that becomes "who cares if a few trees are dying" and he knows that hes killing more than trees in biggering
I made a version of the onceler capturing orcas instead: At first I didn't realize I needed all these whales. I had a little goldfish, and that goldfish was enough. A place where I could sit and watch. A place where I could give it food. But now I've had a little time to reassess my needs. And I need a bigger office, I need a bigger chair. A bigger desk More orcas to keep A smaller tank for them. Because I'm biggering, I'm figuring on biggering And biggering is triggering more biggering. (The lorax part is the same) There is a principle of nature That most every creature knows. It's called survival of the fittest, and this is how it goes. The animal that wins has got to Claw and bite and kick and punch. The animal that doesn't winds up someone elses lunch. A company's an animal That's trying to survive. It's struggling and fighting Just to keep itself alive. I must keep biggering! I'm figuring on biggering! Though biggering is triggering more biggering. I WON'T STOP BIGGERING! I'm figuring on biggering Though biggering is triggering MORE biggering! If the viewers are coming, And the money multiplying, And the trainers are lying, And the lawyers are DENYING, Who cares if some "fish" are DYING? I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR CRYING! This is all so gratifying! (Also I know orcas are mammals, but I put fish instead of whales on purpose.)
