Here's what I don't get... You've got a game. It works. WHY OH WHY do you keep trying to update stuff on something that works prefectly the way it is? This is why bugs like this happen. You leave working shit alone. Jesus, this is like coding lesson 101.
You can't, always. You never write *ALL* the software in your program/game. Nobody has time to build the entire universe from scratch every time. It's common to use libraries of code that are published on the internet. People are working had to find exploits in commonly-used software libraries, which means if you're using that library then *your* code is vulnerable, too. You *have* to keep updating it to keep your servers and your users secure, even if you haven't changed anything else in your program. The problem is, often those other libraries will add features of their own, forcing you to change how you use them. Unless you have a comprehensive suite of automated tests, it's hard for a human to test everything, and easy for small bugs to creep in over time where you don't expect them. And a free game developed by probably one person in their spare time is unlikely to have that level of rigour. Welcome to the advanced class.
@@BeheadedKamikaze Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't understand this despite being a lead dev at very well known game software house for the last, errrm, 25+ years. I get what you're saying, loads of people do use code they've copied and pasted from SO and stuff they've pinched/forked from any public git repo they can find. Most of our games are created with engines which of course come with their own set of vulnerabilities, to be fair though, a lot of our engines are written in-house. But vulnerabilities are just a reason to dislike open source, which is why stuff like heartbleed, left pad and SO many others make me laugh so much. However, I'm pretty sure Miniclip didn't make these changes due to vulnerabilities, but rather it was an attempt to monetise. Also, let's face it, regression testing, more QA would have probably stopped this from even being a problem in the first place.

Yeah, everyone seems to enjoy copying and pasting stuff from SO and using/forking every public repo they can find. So it makes me chuckle when things like heartbleed and padleft pop up. Just another reason to avoid open source because no one actually reviews what they use. But I'm willing to bet that the breaking changes in this game aren't due to vulnerabilities, but rather to do with marketing, advertising or monetisation. We use game engines too, but luckily most of ours are in-house ones, but they probably still contain vulnerabilities. Besides, better QA and some regression testing would have probably prevented the problems seen in this video. Thanks for the invite to the advanced class, but I'm not sure I'm quite ready for that yet.
@@thewelder3538 I do not mean to offend you, but I could not possibly know that about you 😄 All I had to go on is your original comment, which to be honest sounds like something a jaded Senior Dev would say. It seems we would have a similar tenure and role, though I work in big enterprise rather than entertainment. 🍻 It's near impossible to avoid open source for anything web-based, and you'd have to be coughing up bags of money with a sizeable team to try building it all yourself, though I do understand a lot of game studios prefer to do it that way for various reasons and platforms. Agree with you about QA but again, I don't know the size or situation of whoever built Agario.
@@BeheadedKamikaze Sorry, my reply does sound somewhat harsh. My point still stands however. Since I've not seen the release notes, or even if they have them, there's no way to know what caused this bug. It is doubtful that it was a security issue though, especially one caused through the use of open-source. I might be wrong, but usually problems like these arise from feature additions or gameplay mechanics changes. It's hard to see how bugs like this occur on a working product unless you're targeting advertising/monetization which is really how Miniclip generate their revenue. Still, I think some more QA and regression would have prevented this issue.
