I am 67 and just learning to sew... again 😂. I tried when I was younger but now I know I didn't want to sew I just wanted the cool thing. Sewing is 75% plan and prep. 20% sewing and at least 5% figuring out what went wrong 😉. The Internet is wonderful. I spend many hours researching and learning, and being inspired by myself when applying what I learned. I have become a great ripper outer, and have learned to love it if that is what I am doing. The minute I feel like I am rushing or aggravated in any way, I walk away. After a rest, a snack, a few videos, maybe the next day it all comes together in joy and I am 100% focused. This is how I sew now and the cool thing is a byproduct.❤
I'm old as dirt and just learning to sew. I have the experience of knowing that the things I've learned the most from are my mistakes. Yet it's still hard when frustration and lack of reward kick in to remember that, so I do have to remind myself. But honestly, the things I've screwed up 100 times and fixed 100 times and learned to do better 100 times are the things I'm best at. I also have to remind myself: there's nothing like learning a new skill to make you feel like an idiot! 🙂

100%! As someone who is currently studying fashion, the skill that goes into the full process from drafting the pattern to final garment is tricky. It takes a lot of practice and errors to fully master the craft. Love your content bro.
Something i see a lot is trying to freestyle everything. Bags and accessories are one thing, but making clothes that fit and look the way you want is another -- ppl waste so much fabric because they think they can drape their way to well-made clothes, but they don't know about fabric types and grain and recovery/stretch, and they just cut however. Well-written patterns (like yours) tell you how to lay out the pieces and construct the garment, no need to get it out of thin air or use up 3 yds of sweatshirt fleece to make a hoodie.
I agree! For some, they have to do it and see it to believe it (like myself). Then once you realize it's not coming out like you expected, you diverge to patterns. Great point!
i got into sewing to make gear (backpacks, pouches, travel acc...etc). i borrowed my sisters machine and got some fabric and zippers, and i made my first zippered pouch. now i have my own machine and made 5 complex backpacks for an intended purpose. I told my self i like making gear, then i saw your channel...just today i altered my first pair of pants. now ill have to watch how to make pants. its been a long ride, learned how to make my own backpack patterns, and i learned my machines limitations and how to mitigate those situations when designing my pattern
When I first started I also went hard into accessories/backpacks. Sewing a zipper tho... ain't easy as beginner! That's awesome, I love when you create gear tailored to a specific purpose. Excited for you to check out the pants tutorial, see if you like it 😚
Great wisdom that can be applied to many things in life. I just found your channel. I sewed as an early teen. I learned from my mother how to follow a pattern, choose material, and many of the basics. I made a regular and a reversible wrap-around skirt, corduroy pants, and a big shirt that she wore after I stopped wearing it. 15 years later, I made my neice a pair of corduroy overalls and a puffy sleeved blouse. There was at least one dress for myself in there, as well. I sewed all this on my mom’s Singer from the 50’s. It’s now 35 + years later, and I’m retired. You have helped me pick a new sewing machine, and to revive my skills. Thank you! 🙏 ☮️

Great message. The biggest thing I run into is scaling patterns. Being a bigger guy (6'2" with wide shoulders), I watch videos, buy patterns and although I make them to spec, then never quite fit right. Totally self taught as well. So there is a large knowledge gap in that regard. Anyway, love your videos and anxiously await new ones.
Evert time i wanted to trow my mashine on the table. I took a deep breath and stopped for that day and am still learning but it learned me 1 thing if the tread breaks pick it up and start over.
Started sewing 3 years ago and have only ever made three things from scratch so far, everything else has been alterations/thrift flips/reworks. Patterns and making things from scratch is so scary!
im still learning these lessons, but the biggest one that ive learned is DO YOUR RESEARCH. don't try to freehand an entire project, actually put in the effort to figure out x,y,z. itll be well-worth it in the end.
This actually came at the perfect time for me, because I only recently started sewing- and following you, for that matter. I’ve got some really ambitious projects in mind… but thankfully my friends have reminded me to slow down and build up to that. So I’m working towards those, and your patterns have been part of that journey. I just finished a reversible bucket hat the other day :)

@@bookswithatwist-vanvelzerp9262 It went fast, once I got a feel for how the machine worked! I did make several mistakes- measurements, fabric choices, mixing up the "right" and "wrong" sides. Nothing a seam ripper couldn't get through, though, and all mistakes that are to be expected when taking up a new skill! Overall it's messy and a snug fit, but it holds together and I love it! An important thing that I'm trying to learn is not talking down my accomplishments

LOL I have ZERO experience - just got a SE600 - I squealed in delight when I got my first bobbin right ! LOL I haven't even been able to thread the needled yet - I am forcing myself to take just ONE thing each day .... because I want to keep the love - just as you say !
I always found alterations more difficult than a new piece. Alterations require understanding how the garment was constructed which isn't easy when you don't know how to construct from scratch.
What’s helped me is I don’t take what’s in my mind as what will manifest. It’s an idea for me as fragile as glass. I like to break that glass and let what comes come and learn from every project. Over time I’ve gotten better and more confident.
This is me I want to make the cheongsam I seen on this palace drama show. 😂😂😂😂. But I’m being smart and starting small first. I’m being good and patient ☺️.
A couple of Qs. Will you be doing a video explaining different types of threads and fabrics? Further more, what are some essentials will us beginners really need? I have a tendency of collecting a lot of "tools" when I begin a hobby but never actually following through. I've got spools of threads but have no idea if they're good for the item I'm making. Are cutting boards and rotary cutters essential, I feel like I need those things. Lol see, I'm totally jumping the gun before I even have a project in mind. 😬 How will I know what kind of tension to use? So many questions. 😭 TIA!
i just did my first two projects tonight: a single panel black out curtain and a 18" fleece and sherpa color block circle pillow case. im happy with how both came out but theyre both so sloppy. had moments in the middle of both projects where i saw that i was goign to encounter problems but i forced my way through them when taking the time to fix those problems would have made the end product better. did i jump into projects that were harder than i should have? i feel like i may have but im not sure
Circles/curves are hard to sew so go easy on yourself! Glad you pushed through either way. Find some easy projects to build your skills and confidence :) Tote bag or pillowcases are classic beginner projects (maybe without a circle this time)
Hello allan, I really want to sew the hood you designed, but I just can't find a copyshop wich prints in such a big format, I live in Germany and sadly can't wait for the delivery of the paper plans because it's for an occasion. If anybody has an idea how I could solve this problem I'd be glad to hear it, thanks in advance.
I wouldn’t get a serger (also called overlocker) until you’re comfortable with a sewing machine. A serger will help finish raw edges but it’s another investment that I think you’ll know if it’s necessary when you reach that level. You can zigzag stitch your edges with your sewing machine until then 🙂
Great advice. I’ve sewn for decades and only bought an overlocker (what we call a serger in Australia) after about twenty years of sewing. There are lots of ways of neatly finishing seams without one.
I found your channel after saving a bunch of other sewing videos from other experienced sew...ers? 😅 All of them had long drawn out stories to tell without having much to teach. Insert your video on the basics and I wanted to pick up sewing again. 😭❤️ My perfectionism definitely held me back in the past and the want to create something grand, as you said. I've read my manual so many times n watch so many videos but still can't get the zigzag(lighting bolt stitch ) right to sew my in seam on my t-shirt I have a brothers CP2160P COMPUTERIZED SEWING MACHINE .can someone help me please

Is there a sewing machine servicing shop you can bring it to? When the needle is going down, is it hitting or rubbing anything? Are you using really thick fabric? It's difficult to troubleshoot from a far, wish I could help more!!
Hey bro. How do you keep cut fabric from rolling? I'm trying to hem a shirt and after I cut it it rolls. Hard to pin down the hem good enough to get it under the sewing machine to hem.
