I've found my bees actually winter very well on sugar syrup as long as the syrup has been dosed with the hive alive additive. In Maine, and haven't lost a " sugar syrup fed" colony over winter in years.

The problem is that people need to take a weekend class from a master beekeeper before getting bees. I am a second year beekeeper. I took a weekend class and then did a one year mentorship...Bees die over winter usually because they were not treated for varroa mites prior to going into winter. Colonies shrink during winter so if your mite count is high and the colony is small they will not be able to control the mites..They also need to be feed sugar water or pollen so they don't starve over winter. You don't have to feed sugar water if you leave frames of stored honey in the box. The biggest problem is that people think they put a box in their yard, and that's it done... That's not the case... So now you catch a swarm ... Does anyone here know what to do next? When do you add a second box, when do you make a split, when do you feed them,what does the brood pattern look like, do you see eggs, do you have hive beetles or mites....ect ect. Take a weekend class, people, before getting bees..

I’ve rescued 2 colonies last week. I feed mine a lot of sugar syrup when I catch a new swarm to build them up. They need it to build comb for the Queen to lay eggs and build up strong before winter hits. They do better in a big cluster. The second year I don’t feed them sugar. I’m in hot, dry Texas and once summer hits there’s very little food available for them.

Buying bees is not a scam but free bees are always great! Overwintering successfully has more to do with the management practices and health of the bees than it does with bought vs caught honey bees. There are so many ways to manage bees and this is just one.

I’ve had 2 swarms move into a vacant hive box. Both were very dangerous colonies. Must have been Africanize. No fun at all. My German Shepherd would not even want to go outside to the back yard. I’d be working in my garden 30’ away and would be getting stung for no reason. I had to work the garden in my bee suit.

I think it is wonderful that you, along with Dr. Leo, are teaching natural beekeeping methods that have stood the test of time. I am certain, like myself, many people did not have this knowledge, as it has been replaced over time. Catching swarms of local bees is the correct path. Why buy bees when you can go out and catch some already acclimated to our own area. It makes perfect sense. Please keep the beekeeping videos with Dr. Leo coming! Thank you so very much!

The first big lie of beekeepeng is buying bees, the second big lie is that you need a lot of complex equipment and stuff. The bigger bussines in beekepeeng isn´t selling honey, or renting hives for pollination, the big money is on sellin beekeeping supplies, because beekeepers get hypnotized by all the weird fancy stuff that promise to help them to keep their hives alive. The only thing you really need is a smoker, a suit, and a simple DIY hive that you can build from scratch. The kenya hive is the best on every aspect, super simple, and you can use it to catch your bees, to produce honey, queens, royal jelly, whatever you want.

Where I live I never saw honeybees but I tried swarm traps anyway... no luck. I think because I'm so far from a town and I'm surrounded for miles and miles by a fir forest (for lumber production). I finally bought bees last year and they're doing good in the insulated layens hive. Thank you Dr Leo!
@Alkarasu
@Alkarasu Месяц назад
Well, if you never saw any bees or swarms it might mean that you're in luck and may actually exploit it for your benefit (and even some nice profit if it goes well). Due to your isolation, you'll be the only source of drones in the area, which means you can choose who your new queens mate with, and that would enable you to do some good selective breeding. Isolated places are naturally valued among beekeepers for that purpose.

All you need is a couple used frames that smell like bees to put inside the box and sugar water with a drop of lemongrass oil in a clean spray bottle. Spray the box twice a day inside with the mix, starting in March. No feeders needed.. Never have I had to buy bees, but I do give them away, when they swarm out.
