Kris, it’s normal. I bought this year, spec exactly as I want it. If you sell after 12 months it’s a guaranteed loss. But I bought as a long term car. I’ll change the battery if I need to and I’ll enjoy it as I do now. The day you walk out of the garage you lose 20%. It’s life.

Lesson of the day. Don't buy luxury cars you barely can afford. But all EVs are losing value fast. Not juts Porsche. People say you buy to keep EV or it will cost you more than ICE.

In general it seems the best time to buy a used car is after the first two years of use when the worst depreciation has occurred; it is the reality of car buying. Bad for the seller but good for the buyer. My one concern with EV's is that this depreciation will be even worse due to rapidly improving technology and better range in newer cars making the older models much less desirable.
@Rumblingbelly
@Rumblingbelly 8 месяцев назад
Very good point. I admit that im scared to buy any EV if in a year or two we will get 1000 km range EV's on the market. Why would anyone want your WLTP 500km car then?
@stevem4413
@stevem4413 8 месяцев назад
@@Rumblingbelly I have leased cars in the past; one experience was better than the other when turning the car in at the end of the lease, but perhaps with an EV this is the way to go. At least up front you know what the car will be worth at the end of the lease, and here in the U.S. we can get the government EV tax rebate when leasing a foreign car. I currently drive a Volvo XC60 recharge which gives me the electric range for 99% of my daily driving without having to use the ICE. I would like for my first total EV to be a Volvo also.

What you actually is saying is, you bought an lifestyle you actually cant afford. And now you pay the price for it. Its a common theme in Norway, many live on credit to show of that they are rich. But in reality they are poor and living paycheck to paycheck, barely. Living of their credit cards that never will go away. Sometimes one have to ask, was it worth it in the end? I have a now 2 year old XC40 recharge, can i afford it, yes. Will i run and put myself in more debt, just to get a better one, no. What i have going on right now is more than enough, and next year i only have the car in debt. So can you guys living on credit show off your fancy lifestyles with your fancy cars and apartments, but in reality you eat thru your nails as soon some one mention intrest rate going up 0,1%. Stressful way of life really, just to pretend to be something one is not!

800000kr All EVs have plummeted in value here in the Uk. Teslas have cut had to cut there prices by 30% or more and that ripped the rug out of Tesla pricing and at the same time all EVs plummeted. Cheap stuff from China is flooding in and it’s good stuff with better batteries and great tech.

Well technically, considering the incentives on EV's in Norway, he didn't buy it at the highest price. Everyone else around the globe bought it at 150K Euro. But I fully agree, it's not the car, it's every luxury car or in fact any luxury asset that's affected by the recession.

It is not a 50% depreciation. You are comparing vs buying your car new again, not what your 2-year-old car is worth in the used market. Not sure what you expected. Have you never bought a high-end car new before? They always depreciate massively. Next time you will know and maybe learn a lessen and buy two year old used high end car and let first owner take that biggest hit 🙂

I would not sell your taycan. As many have suggested, keep it for another 2 or 3 years. Wait til interest rates are more stable and lower, that can take some time. Also people would be in a better position to buy then, as no one wants luxury vehicles in a recession. I still think you have more content to be made with the Taycan. Take it on road trips, do degradation test, races etc. As you almost always lose money on cars, especially luxury cars. If you’re already upside down on the finance on the car, you’re not going to get it back by selling at a huge loss. Do as what Håkon from Finansavisen advised Taycan owners, sit back and relax, and enjoy your car. Kind regards

Honestly, I thought you were going to say "wrapping it yellow" lol. I'm not sure that all/many of your comments relate to the fact that it is in EV or an EV Porsche as many of them are global issues affecting us all. You did a video many years ago, which I almost commented on, where your attitude to residuals was very naive. I wondered at the time whether you had big surprise in store. Yes, during a particular period when supplies were short, components an issue, used EVs a rarity, used values remained quite good. As there are more Evs on the market and lease deals ending, they are becoming available at a lower cost -- which is actually a good thing for used buyers and the expansion of the use of EVs and only reflects the used market in general, not EV's.Most people keep new cars for longer periods of time, 3-5 years would be my guess, and changing after 20 months is probably the worst financial thing you can do. Ofcourse, you are a youtuber so content is key but you've been doing fine with loan cars for some time. You've actually lost 37% on what you paid for it which is probably similar to the depreciation on many expensive new cars, ICE or EV so I am not sure why you are particularly picking on this Porsche. It is a common understanding (certainly here in the UK, that new cars (with very few high end exceptions) lose around 20% when you drive it out of the showroom so another 17% after so many miles and months is not surprising. Don't forget Porsche have to refurb it and sell it with a warranty so that will cost them and add to the resale value in a very competitive marketplace. Personally, I'd lose the yellow, keep the mileage down by using the loan cars you are privileged to have access to and keep it until you feel the market is right for you to sell. Having said that, I've just swapped my 56,000 miles etron 55 for a Q8 etron vorsprung after 30 months but I expected to lose money and money was not the driving factor in my decision - so each to his own. I'd be interested to know what you were expecting for it? Also, I assume you now have to pay tax on the replacement (I don't know the rules in Norway) so that is going to make the fact of changing so early, even more expensive.

There is a U.K. RU-vid channel where the host is also complaining about the savage depreciation his Taycan has suffered. They have a really bad trade in value but when you look at the cost to buy a 2 year old used one with average miles on it then Porsche dealers are still asking ridiculously high prices for them. The Taycan Cross Turismo has been the only Porsche I’ve really fancied buying but I would not consider a new one and seeing how much approved used ones are going for at dealers I won’t be considering even a used one any time soon. When I took delivery of my EV the advice I was given was “don’t buy an EV with your own money, lease it and let somebody else take the financial hit” that was from a BMW dealer! After two years with my lowly Mini Cooper S E the dealership is asking if I would like to change it for the forthcoming one or a Countryman EV and are offering a great exchange valuation on a 12000 miles 2 years old low range car, but thing is they can sell every used one that they get in fairly quickly. Unfortunately in these difficult times financially people just don’t want to spend loads of money on what is seen as an expensive flash luxury sporty car, they want less eye catching lower cost sets of wheels that are cheap to buy and run.

Trading in a 20 month old Porsche to a Porsche dealer will result in a massive loss. Who’d have thought. 😢 An expensive car will depreciate the most in that period. Always has, always will. Nothing new. Trading to a dealer will be hugely worse than a private sale and it’s a Porsche dealer. Really, what did you expect. Nothing to do with being an EV. It has always been this way and very naive to imagine otherwise. Here in the UK (and I see no reason to be different elsewhere), as far as I can see, EVs are depreciating less than ICE cars. Worse depreciation is a line that EV detractors like to trot out, but try buying a used EV and you’ll discover how well they hold their price. Anyone knows where to find these EVs that are worth nothing after a couple of years, please let me know where to find them.

Don't sell now, sooner or later inflation will be lower and the rate of interest will be lower too. In the short term, though, the rate of interest might be higher. Wait for better times, they will come.😊 Even if you will sell the car for the same price in two years, you have used it for two years extra, that is a big difference. It is just you wanting to sell?😂

A friend of mine had a pre owned porsche 911 4s. Bought it for 85.000€ and sale it a month ago after 3 years owning for 87.000€. It tooks only 4 days to sell it. Porsche has to be only ICE. Elettrictric Porsche does not means Porsche for the sports cars fans. This is the first and main reason of the problem with your Tycan. Then add inflaction, and all others reasons you mentioned and the game is over. This is why you find so many Tycan on sales. And it happens in your country which is a kind of EV bouble. In others country where the EV market is at total 3% is even worst. For instance not many 911 or boxter…are on sale and if you find them on sale is only because people try to trade on it and searching for another sporty ICE models but not for sure an EV one. That’s the fact. Kind regards.

2 years of new car shortages kept resale prices high. Not any more. Interest rates rising also killing car sales. Porsche dealer used prices are always high, justified by the gap to a new car. Part exchange always 10-15k less than their resale price. You also can’t avoid taxes for ever.

My taycan 4s depreciated 800000 sek in 3 years and 86000 km's so I am not particularly happy either. Yes, recession is one thing but Porsche has fatally misjudged the second hand market of the Taycan. There are several hundred used Taycans foe sale in SE today. The problem is Porsche flodded the marker with taycans helped by tax benefits and subsidiced prices in many countries. They saw money rolling in and did not for the first time in their history give a shit about the second hand market. I have had 15 Porsches since 1973 but now I am extremely dissapointed with Porsche.

The weird bubble where EV's second hand were getting priced almost as much as a new car has burst in most countries and others it is slowly leaking out of the bubble. Most cars have always had a huge depreciation I remember original Top Gear doing their news sections on occasion about depreciation. The big sports car companies like Porsche are some of the worst and those are ICE powered cars so EV's will be the same.

But, good thing is that the value of your next car moves in conjunction with the price of your old car.

It seems you are high mileage for the age of your car. You are enjoying it and admit that it is a wonderful car. Keep it and enjoy it. We just got our second Taycan. The lease locked in the depreciation so there were no surprises. The new car is better equipped than the trade in and costs less per month. There are EV credits in the US, that distorts the market. Oh, we got a credit on the old car when we turned it in and put it towards the new one. Use your car more for RU-vid content. EV's don't have a monopoly on depreciation. There are Rolls Royce and Bentley dealerships down the road, preowns are selling for fractions of original sticker, ofter fewer than 10,000 miles on 5 year old cars.

these high end EV depreciate way more faster then other EV, just compare Tesla 3 with Taycan and Etron GT on the German second hand market for example, 4 year old high mileage Tesla 3 are between 25k and 30k euro so they lost roughly half of their value over that period and that is for a car with 150k km. At the same time you can pick up a 20 month old e-tron GT for less then 70k with 15k km, a car that was new at least 110k euro, i don't even want to know how a 4 year old Taycan or E-tron GT with 150k km will depreciate.

If we picked with our minds than hearts we would all be driving vw up! Evs or seat mi , with its 6 or 7 km per kw life’s boring enough with the other two evs on the way your face the same again it’s just don’t half the big grin with its 0-60

Sorry, but how can you say you are not rich? Many, many poor people do not think about the depeciation of their Porsche, but how to get something to eat. I really like your videos, but I feel that this comment is not really acceptable.

I would not call a person owning ONE expensive car rich, many people can afford to take a loan for a car, but that is that. If you, after that cant afford everything else easily in life, then you are not rich.

I would never buy an EV instead I would lease one. God knows what the depreciation is or will be in the future when the market gets flooded with used EVs and people either don’t want to pick one or won’t be keen on an used EV because of battery life issues

Isn't depreciation a common thing among all electric cars? I am of the opinion that if you want to change cars (especially electric) after 2-3 years better lease than buy.

The problem is that used European luxury cars are traditionally sold abroad: middle east, eastern block, north Africa, etc. Those markets don't have EV infrastructure yet, so the cars flood the European market.

Its called ”EV second hand market…”. Nobody wants them anymore than a used phone o other old electronics. I guess the low cost of ownerdhip compensates a bit for that, If you want low depreceiation buy an old 911, not lo cost to use though 😅 I sold my 4S CT in january and got still s good amount from it , maybe -15/20% from new, 1 year old and 30000km. Dont regret selling before more depreciation, even as nice of a car it was 🤔

Is this a norwegian, Porsche or EV phenomenon? When I check the used car price of my small three year old VW Polo, I could probably sell it for about the same as I paid for it new (there were big discounts then and the prices increased)

I surf ab bit on used car platforms: I compared used cars under 20000km. Taycans start at 80000€. But the insane for me is, that there are so many offers. About 1000 Taycans under 20000km in germany. For comparison I search for my car "VW polo GTI under 20000km" (yes its a much narrower spec but, there are Millions of Polos here). The amount of used cars offered is roughly the same (also about 1000)

I’d be surprised if you couldn’t talk a car supplier into helping you drive one of their electric cars, they could only gain. As for the depreciation on yours. Give it another couple of years, you’ll find that the cost of ownership per year will change utterly.

The more money you spend on a new car that more money you are going to lose. Right now as inflation and car prices are the best options is either to sell and get a cheaper one or keep it 2 years and sell it then. I think only cheap cars are worth buying new these days and if you want a more expensive car then aim for a 2 years used one with guarantee. You'll lose less money... Car money is lost money and right now we are in the middle of a change in car industry, I think electric cars won't last long, hydrogen is around the corner...

You should keep your stuff. I guess you have other cars as well and have car for order(your volvo ev)? And no we are not in a recession yet. In hard times you invest and not spend. First years of a car depreciate the most. I think you already knows this.

This is the best video I've ever seen of you @Kris Rifa. Short and to the point. I can feel your pain and I lol'ed at the same time, awesome intro and you've explained the feeling quite well, haha. Considering the incentives on EV's in Norway, feel lucky that you didn't buy it at the highest price point. Consider that a lot of people around the globe bought it at 150K Euro or dollars (and even payed above MSRP). Blame the economy, not the car. Those that took a lease/rent/finance with a variable interest rate can only blame themselves. Everyone else will keep the car for a longer period, which wasn't a big deal 2 years ago and still isn't today.
