I smelt Opium last year after not trying it for ages and I was surprised to like it as much as I did! The drydown was really lovely! I remember when I was younger that I didn't enjoy it 🤷‍♀️ I guess my taste has moved on! I agree it's very striking, you know when it's Opium. Thanks for watching 🥰

Oh my, I can remember like it was yesterday. Post-communist Romania, 1990, I was coming home from school. My parents always gave me money, because I had to walk through the center of the town and I was reliable😂. There was always a possibility to find some western goods we never had access to before. That particular day, I saw a line in front of a pharmacy and after two hours or so of waiting, I left the pharmacy with four bodysprays Impulse Incognito. My first "fragrance". I could't stomach the scent even back then, but I was sooo proud of owning such a treasure. 😂 Thank you, Claire, for another great video and for the nostalgia❤❤

Wow!!! That is such a story! My friends at work say similar things about post-communist Poland. The chance of spotting something was always there and you had to be ready! I never had Incognito, what was it like? What didn't you enjoy about it? I did have Vanilla Kisses, O2 and Zen though. I think O2 was my favourite and they have just brought it back... I'm too scared to retry it 🤣 Impulse bodysprays are classics! Thanks for watching ❤️ have a fab weekend 🥰

@@dr.claire.perfume To be honest, I don't even remember the smell, only the feeling, a hole-in-the-stomach-feeling.😁 Not pain, just like a hole is growing în your stomach. Today I still have that sensation with a lot of aquatic/ozonic fragrances, when they are loaded with calone, especially the typical melony Givaudan-calone. I can a bit better with the Firmenich-calone, which is more watery-floral to my nose. Have a great weekend too!🥰
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 5 месяцев назад
@@ioanas4839 hmmm! Maybe this is why I can tolerate certain aquatics and others not? I know if it's calypsone or calone it's a no, but there are other things that are not for sure one or the other and those can be tolerable or no no no for me 😂
@ioanas4839
@ioanas4839 5 месяцев назад
I don't know if this makes any sense, I'm a lawyer, not a chemist after all, but here is my delulu😂: Calone as a molecule was discovered by Pfizer back in the 60's. I'm not sure how Firmenich was able to trade-name their molecule under the same name, Calone ( wih the newer version Cascalone). Maybe they bought the rights from Pfizer? So the other companies, Givaudan, IFF, Mane etc. won't use the name calone for their watery ketones. They might have different trade-names, or they just list generic water notes or melon as a note ( like in J Adore). My nose is so bothered by calone, that I pick it up, even if it’ s not listed. So when I smell it in a perfume, I always check the perfumer and the company he/she is working with/for. That is how I came to the conclusion that I dislike the Givaudan-ketones most.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 5 месяцев назад
Yes! I remember reading about Calone's history when I made the clone video and deciding I was very confused about the naming too! Calone is so distinctive and yes I totally get the sinking feeling in my stomach when I smell it. It really is one of the few things that makes me nauseous with fragrance 🤢

This was a wonderful jog back to the good old days with the nod to pop culture moments. I’m not one to follow a trail of perfume to track down the wearer to ask what they’re wearing, but this perfume literally gave me such a high I walked through a crowded streetcar in Toronto, found the woman wearing it and asked her for the name of it because I wanted to buy it. She didn’t seem to want to tell me but she eventually, and reluctantly, said it was Gucci Rush. This was the year 2000 and that formulation was a beast. I own present day Gucci Rush and it’s much more tame but still that fantastic electronic, plastic peach and florals I still love today.
@dr.claire.perfume

I can understand you being taken by Gucci Rush! It's so distinctive and yes, it was strong! My bottle was a vintage one from 2006 and that was potent 😂 the modern one is more gentle for sure. I love how off beat the bottle is too. It just makes you curious and want to try it! 🥰

My mom used to get me great fragrances and this was one of them. I remember I didn't use it often at all because I was born and raised in fort Lauderdale Florida so it's always summer there. But in 2006 I moved to Chicago and I still had about 75% of that bottle left, it became a completely different fragrance once I was in colder climate. Once I realized how it performed in the fall and winter in Chicago I wore it everyday pretty much. For the first 2 years I lived in Chicago I wore Sensi and Amore Amore by Cacharel. Looking back I'm actually so happy that I hung on to them because they were very much too heavy for South Florida, except evenings in the winter months. Hi Claire! What a fun video. I like so many of these fragrances. Each one takes me to a different time in my life (I might have discovered a few a bit later) but they also all feel very timeless. I’m a Millennial so I was still a kid in the 90s. I love 80s and 90s fragrances. Fragrances that really take me back to the 90s (because my mum wore them) are Dior Dune, Krazy Krizia, Cerruti 1881 and of course… Poison. My favourite late 90s fragrances that I didn’t discover until the mid-2000s are Organza, Hypnotic Poison, and Gucci Rush. I love Gucci Rush, it’s such an interesting scent. Oud Bouquet takes me back to 2018…. That’s when I got my first decant. I bought a bottle in 2020. Honestly, I don’t think I enjoy it anymore. It’s just so incredibly heavy that I hardly ever (well, never) reach for it. I love that you included important events from popular culture, politics, and history. Gucci Memoir is such an odd scent; I tried it but didn’t understand the scent at all. Just a super odd one to my nose.

Yes you are very down with the vintage and the classics! I really love hearing about them on your channel. The details are really interesting and make those fragrances even more special when you sniff them! Oud bouquet is also too much for me 😂 it's just a lot isn't it? Lovely on the right person though! Memoire is a real head scratcher. I don't know who thought that crazily plasticky bitter almond was a goer in the opening... I love these videos! So funny looking down memory lane and an interesting way to frame the context. Have been restocking some of my old favourite's from the 90s and early 2000 lately. Making peace with the fact they are now classified as vintage and feeling old.😲 I just got Ultraviolet from 1999 this week and it's still so good! 1995 to 2005 was a golden era of innovative designer fragrances (in my opinion). Here you are listing half my favourites! Also just restocked up on Cinema, Crystal Noir and Allure which I still love. I'm 38 now, these are the scents of my carefree highschool/uni days and 20s.So glad most of these are still being made. From New Zealand to Yorkshire we are connected by the nostalgic memories of the scents of our youthful nights out. Yes, I agree, if you visit parfumo, you can see the number of fragrances released per year and the number is just going up and up. There are stats out there saying that 80% of fragrances are discontinued within 6 months... If that's true, that's insane! Ohhh this brought me back to the time I nearly stalked a woman at a local grocery because she smelled absolutely amazing! I finally worked up the courage to ask her what she was wearing; Armani Code. A love was born that day back in 2008 (think it came out earlier but living in Midwest US everything is behind) and I wore it and Gucci Rush non stop. Until… the DREADED reformulations. UGGGG! Code is now a whisper of the beauty it once was and Rush I just sniff for nostalgia, but can’t wear. Love the history & timeline of current events, very nostalgic!

So many memories. I just love this whole concept - especially how you put the years in context for us with the music/movies/politics of the day. You're simply the best. If I didn't know you well, I would say, "check your math" because there's no WAY that 1994 was 30 years ago! The Crystal Noir is a love/hate for sure, but for me it's BOTH. I still haven't figured it out. My beloved Orchidée Vanille! 2009 seems like yesterday! Boy Toy = chemical weapo - AGREE! I LOVE that you ended with your fragrance of the day. I'm always so curious what people are wearing as they film. I have the Coconut Fizz, and although I dislike coconut for the most part, I really like that one. Top notch scentertainment and scentucation, Claire. Thank you for the hard work you put in.

It’s funny (odd not haha) to think I still gravitate to frutchouli fragrances. My tastes have expanded & matured but not really changed at all. There was (or maybe still is) an influencer from Amsterdam that I watched on YT and through her I discovered L’Imperatrice. I wish I could remember her channel name. The Ads were some of the first I paid attention to. Thank goodness my mother let me buy it and wear it, though it wasn’t as enjoyable on as it was on others. J’Adore in ‘99- I was right there with it. I almost got Versace Crystal Noir later in 2006 or 2007. I apparently was not tracking fragrance trends again until more recently. Thank you for this one. @@dr.claire.perfume Hi Claire, Thank you for sharing your comment. it was touching and moving to read about your godmother. I didn't realise that Allure was Peach base, I actually really love it! and never thought I particularly like peach in fragrances... at least I know I don't like the gourmand hyper-realistic peachy syrupy types of perfumes. Yet in the case of Allure for example, I smell more of an overall array of the whole perfume, rather than particular notes within it I only realised this insight lately, which is maybe why I usually smell perfumes as an overall scent, and then decide whether I like them or not, rather than being drawn to a particular note or deciphering the note accords within a fragrance... So I guess it's more of an overall experience for me. Good for me to realise this & put words to this experience, as I've always wondered how come I don't decipher certain notes as some people do, and I rather experience an overall experience in the scent of a perfume... Best wishes to you and Thank You ! 🙏😊🪴

I sell perfume for a living since 2006 - I really enjoy your channel and the nostalgic feeling I got while watching this video. I worked as a beauty advisor for Clarins from 2006-2009. I remember how much I hated the Mugler fragrances at that time. We were encouraged to wear them of course, the only one I could stomach was "Angel Innocent" .Did you know that one? It was like a fresher version of Angel in a tall cylinder bottle. I had so many bottles of the old formula Angel and Alien because they gifted them to us on every occasion. I wish I had kept some of them, so I could send them to you. I agree btw. Mugler isn't the same anymore since L'Oreal Luxe bought them. @@dr.claire.perfume I did enjoy the original version of Mugler Cologne (the light green bottle) and I did like Alien Fusion. Actually, "Alien Hypersense" is similar to "Fusion", although the lasting power and projection is a lot weaker with all new formulations (in my opinion). Some scents you recognize immediately and that means they created something that stands out. I would love a video about discontinued flankers of Mugler. Also ScentedSnowdrops, who I mention a lot is my friend, so I'm biased, but I met him here and he has greatly influenced my channel and has taught me loads about fragrance and social media. He never uses links or has any interest in flogging you stuff. I guess really that the problem is that honesty doesn't always translate into a slick video so it's quite hard to tell a lot of the time! Btw, I will post a "men's" fragrance video either next video or the following one. It's recorded, I just have to edit it 😊 thanks for watching 🥰

So cool hearing about the history and trends of these fragrances. I use to work for a woman who had a massive collection of really old perfume like some it had real mink oil in it. She would sell decants of it. Love how you speak of what was trending in the media at the time and linking to the perfumes. Based on tarot cards?? How cool! Toy Boy yes! I loved it just for the name 🤣. Gucci makes some great fragrances. I wish they would make perfume for men. I am not a fan of cologne. I hate the way the all smell and they all smell the same and it bothers my allergies. 👍

The first fragrances I got were Roma by Laura Biagiotti and Naomi Campbell celebrity fragrance. My roomate got them from her boyfriend but didn't like them, so she gave them to me. They split up soon after. I still keep a bottle of Roma in my collection. It's a heady aromatic vanilla with a mint opening note. Very different from contemporary gourmand vanillas. Before graduation I treated myself with Pamplelune by Guerlain and Ça sent beau by Kenzo. I still like the opening of Ça sent beau but I never understood the dry down. Pamplelune is still my favourite citrus scent.
@dr.claire.perfume

Roma is the kind of thing that sounds like what I was looking for with Lolita Lempicka Green Lover and didn't really get! I really like mint 🙂 Pamplelune is gorgeous, I really love that one and also the bergamot one that they do, they have some truly beautiful citrus fragrances! Fab memories and I think the writing was on the wall for your roommate's relationship if she was giving away perfume gifts 😉 have a good week 🥰

Can you tell us your opinion on chemical ingredients in fragrances as now there is worry, they are bad for our health. I have big collection, I love perfumes and I am continuously buying new perfumes.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 5 месяцев назад
I don't really know enough to give an opinion as I don't want to spread misinformation. I think an industry insider who's a scientist and who has read around the subject more than me would be a better person to talk about it. I work in medical genetics so it's not my area. I think really that IFRA and government regulations on fragrance composition mean that the industry is pretty tightly regulated and no company would knowingly do anything that might prompt them to be sued these days. Also man made chemicals can be much safer than using natural extracts, which is really the direction that the bulk of the industry is moving in. Thanks for watching 🥰

I remember Charlie by revlon in the 70's. Everyone was wearing it and it was just an 'ok' fragrance and quite strong, gave me though, an awful headache. I'm wondering if it was the aldehydes?
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 5 месяцев назад
Maybe! I think it's aldehydic but also based around lots of strong florals and oakmoss, which can also make things smell quite dry. That combination is probably kryptonite if you suffer with headaches! Thanks for watching 🥰
