What do you use to seal your artwork so it won't transfer? Can you use the same stuff for different types of medium (pencil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal etc)? Thanks :)
On the topic of charcoal, I'm curious if you use a separate tortillions/brushes and eraser for charcoal vs graphite? Is there concern about the dark charcoal accidentally transferring to a future graphite project from those tools? How do you brush off all the little bits of charcoal? Blow them off, or brush them with a drafting brush? Would there be any value in using a workable fixative throughout the project, to protect from ruining the parts that you are already happy with, and then continuing on top of the preserved layer? Is charcoal as easily erased as graphite? Is there powdered charcoal to use in art, as there is graphite powder? Would there be any value/interest to starting a project with a different medium, say neutral tones of watercolor, then adding the dark values with charcoal, similar to how some mix watercolor with colored pencil? Also, do all of the same rules apply to white charcoal? I would love to see white charcoal on black paper. So many questions! lol Thanks for all of the great videos!
charcoal is one of my favorites... it has the diamond potential for every drawing you make... you know a diamond is nothing more then a piece of charcoal that handled stress exceptionally well.
Am I the only one who enjoys the mess? I love looking at my hands and seeing them covered in charcoal. I love using my hands on the paper, I love really immersing myself. But I guess that's just me 😅
When I attended university I was first introduced to charcoal by my instructor through vine charcoal. This messy problem really turned me off of the medium. Imagine my surprise and delight when I figured out there are charcoal pencils! Such a much more enjoyable experience. You make some fantastic suggestions around this issue in this video. Very well done!
in my country don't have this charcoal pencil..i gotta burn some woods to get charcoal and applied it to my bursh to make a tone.It much easier than using graphite to make a tone.i got this idea (using charcoal) after watching your previous videos.Your videos make me understand more about the technique and it much easier for me as a beginner.Thank you kirsty.your art and your videos are awesome!
Since lockdown. I've loved getting back into art and trying new mediums. I'd never tried water colours until watching one of your videos and now I'm looking forward to trying charcoal. Great channel 👍
This is a really well made video, it's clear, sharp visuals with good displays that are timed perfectly with the voice over. Love the production quality thank you Kirsty.
Very helpful video! I've tried charcoal for animals and the results were good, but I haven't tried it for portraits yet, because I don't know how it will end up. Great work, though, keep it up! 😀
Pastels are also "messy" I have resorted to a dust-buster type of vacuum that is HEPA filtered and using Glassine papers to keep the surface and my self clean! OH I loved the elephant drawing you flashed to in this video! The Sky was amazing! watching you do some dramatic backgrounds would be a good video too!
I love working with charcoal. Make-up sponges and applicators also work for blending as well as Q-Tips. I like to do reductive charcoal. A video on that would be great!
Hi Kirsty, what paper do you recommend for charcoal.l noticed you used a rough paper in this video, but I like to work on smooth, does it take the charcoal well or is a rough paper better. Thanks for your tutorials, I have learnt so much from them.
Thank you for another great video and great help. This drawing of yours is amazing. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful talent and experience with us
Thank you Kirsty. Great tips! To clean off the charcoal powder that accumulates I never use a brush as it smears sometimes. I periodically use a small handheld vacuum of low power at an angle (mine charges on the computer).
Compilation video on "hey everybody'" from your Intro, that would brighten the Day. Excuse me. Your videos are certainly helpful and your work outstanding.
Very Nice video👍 ur art is amazing😍 Can you please make video on how to protect charcoal drawings after completion, how to prevent them from getting spoiled
Hi, i didn't get much toys in my childhood, so i spent a lot time with drawing. 1 time i got a charcoal pen even i didn't know what it was. Thanks for decades of years how to use it...but i had had my own joy with it :)
Lol the day we used charcoal in art class we came out looking like a bunch of chimney sweeps. X3 It was an interesting medium to use, tho! It's perfect for learning how to work with shades and lighting!
I love charcoal. I don't mind the mess, part of the process, and a side effect of nice characteristics of this medium, the flexibity of it. You can move it, layer it, lift it of the paper, nothing is final.
It's the mess that draws me to it! I want my hands to be covered. There is something about getting messy and making a nice and satisfying drawing. There's nothing like it. It is by far my favorite medium.
I swore I never use Charcoal bcuz I'm left-handed & so I REALLY smudge ! However, after following your tutorial s I'm sold on it since u use the pencil ones ( for the most part anyway) & no ,I never use my fingers to blend it; except w/ a tissue that is..!P.S. & Wet Wipes are definitely a big help👍
I'm currently practicing charcoal portraits 😉. Thanks a lot for this another tutorial! 👍🏻. Please do make a tutorial about monochromatic watercolor portraits or abstract watercolor portraits. 🙏🏻 thanks! - love for the Philippines 🇵🇭
Can you do a video on using Arteza watercolor... it is a lot cheaper than winsor and newton watercolor so I want to see if I should go ahead and get the winsor and newton watercolor pallete or if the Arteza one would work well too but not so expensive... thank you!
I love charcoal ☺️❤️I love how it comes out but I’m here for more tips bc it does get messy tho 😂always good to learn new tricks. Something that I was taught was using fingers you can transfer oils on your fingers and that’s how it looks all smudged
Omg! You're extremely talented, no matter the medium, simply the best. I just can't understand those thumbs down. Probably jealous people.... By the way: that elephant... simply magical. I love your work!
I love charcoal and pencil drawing most. And I agree drawing with pencil is annoying when it gets this distracting shine at the end. I want to master Softpastel. It gets so messy
Great video. What was the tool you used at end for white highlights? Was it a fine eraser or another tool. Thanks. I'm looking forward to moving from pencil to charcoal
Thanks, Kirsty. I haven't used charcoal in a long time but I did buy some new pencils not long ago and I need to give it a go. Do you ever add in color to charcoal drawings? Would it end up a mess if I tried going in with colored pencils?
