We had the biggest culture shock this last time we returned to the United States. Some of the things that Ric and I noticed may have been happening all along. We've lived outside of the US for almost two years now - this trip back was definitely different!

I know right?!?! Could you imagine being afraid of police in Portugal? 🤣 😆 Could you imagine being female afraid to walk the streets after dark as they do in Portugal? 🤣 😆. Could you imagine sitting at one of the cafe's in the park in Lisbon and some white woman calling the cops on you? 🤣 😆 NEVER - it's hilarious that people think America is all that.

@@Shirleyowens383 these people complain about everything, I think they want the farmers and the restaurants to to give them the food for nothing. When you prepare good meals, you can't just sell at a lost. These people have the money to travel but they want food free. When I buy food just like groceries, I pay for the goods and shut up, because I understand the cost to these owners. Some will never recoup their losses. Buy the a out of food necessary and stop complaining I would say to black U. What about her air fare, hotel ocomadation, I guess their prices are OK.

I know how that is. I can admit, that now that I've moved my mom into assisted living, I finally feel like I've MOVED and I am not just here for a bit before I have to go back. 🤷🏽‍♀️. I had no idea that I did not feel like I lived here but only like I was staying here until I returned a few weeks ago....life is for learnin' 😉

I just came across your channel and had to STOP because of the title! My husband and I(and eventually, children) lived off and on each decade overseas since 1987 due to military service and later as civilian employees. Our last tour began in summer 2006 and ended winter 2014. During that period we lived in Belgium, Germany twice and Italy. Our 3 children(all boys born in Germany, twins born in 89 and a single born in 95) were birthed into travel (we joked) and loved the experience as we did. We realize that we were under the auspices of the U.S Government BUT our quality of life was so satisfying. Let's not talk about the food being healthier. During that 8 year period, we did not visit stateside though some family members came to visit. Our twins graduated from SHAPE HS in 2008 and stayed overseas with us as they did not want to return to the US. I can truly identify with the "reverse culture shock". It's REAL! I'm so glad that I came across this channel because you have described the MANY issues we faced coming back to this Corporation. A few countries in Africa are looking really good...

Hey Andrea, Thank you so much for watching WELCOME to the OBU family. Folks who have been tourist believe that they know what living abroad would be like, but they do not. We encourage people to stay in a country or city for at least a month - in the same city for at least 2 weeks to get a feel of what it might be like to live there. Folks go to some tourist trap for a week, get a bad experience and then report back, "they don't like 'blacks'" 🤣

I enjoy your journey! Lots of time where we live is about perspective. We own how our environment affects us. We moved from the city to Hawaii and had to learn to calm down and relax. It took me several years to change myself. Now when I go back to the mainland I am aware, and my inner peace is intact because my perspective is different. When we visited Fiji, we had to relax even more than we did in Hawaii. It was enlightening and freeing. New Zealand was another lesson in relaxing my antenna. Encouraging people to travel outside their comfort zone for a new reality is the best gift ever.

You two are speaking the truth, we no longer have real food like we used to back in the 70's. That's why I'm looking forward to relocating. Something is wrong with them trying to force feed everyone all this chemically enhanced food.

I’m a New Yorker that moved to LA and what you said about public transportation is also true in NY. Even though NY has its evils and definitely not where I want to live anymore, I felt way more community there than in LA and I feel that having to take public transport everywhere helped with that. Love your channel!!

I LOVE listening to y'all! I also lived in Denver for a few years up until 2021 when I returned to Texas (which is also a hot mess).....I experienced the "crabs in a barrel" mentality BAD there. I also lived off York and 35th....I wasn't ready for what I saw.....I thought Denver would be nice and calm and drama free LOL. And y'all are right about the chicken; it wasn't until I started traveling to Europe often that I realized that a chicken breast is supposed to be smaller than the palm of your hand. LOL I also hate listening to y'all because after every livestream I"m ready to pack my bags and GO...NOW! I have a few affairs to wrap up before I can do so, though. I did spend a couple of weeks in Italy at the end of December and the peace and joy and LACK OF PUBLIC ANGER felt there was refreshing!

@@jacquelinehamilton9935 I went to Milan and Florence...this was my 4th time to Italy. Previously I had been to Rome, Naples, and Venice. I always have a good time and the people are welcoming....My favorites people-wise were Milan and Florence...Milan is very diverse (I met a lot of NIgerians there) and Florence, although very touristy, had very nice locals as well.

Hi Alisi and Ric nice to listen to your feelings. Yes you are quite right about the feelings one experiences when returning back and immerse again in a scenario you lived before but now you have a standard to check the differences. About brown sugar: yes you can get it in some supermarkets under the portuguese designation: 'açucar mascavado'. When going to the Baixa try the one super at Rua 1º de Dezembro (paralel to Rossio square, rigth hand side when looking to the river). Have a nice stay in SA and have a nice return home too. Bye.

Regarding food, restaurant, etc in America I am with you that “something is REALLY very wrong. I visited East Africa last May and ate the most wonderful, tasty and healthy food. During those 10 days, I lost 8 pounds. Now what that tell you? Here in the states, I struggle to maintain or lose weight. The food does not taste good so I cook for myself.

How wonderful that you are in Cape Town. I’ve only seen video and it looks gorgeous. As for costs in the U.S., I was having a salt craving so I went to Mickey Ds for a large order of fries and strawberry banana smoothie x 2 my son was visiting. Why was my total $19.01? Sorry your mom passed out. That is awful that they tried to steal her purse. I know the area well. I left Los Angeles 16 years ago. The USA is a pure mess. I’m living that isolation life until I figure out where I’m going to live outside of the USA. Enjoy those beautiful Cape Town streets ❤🦋❤

Exactly! It should cost less to be a vegetarian, but I find when we were in the states that the 'fresh' fruits and vegetables were nearly double the price that we pay at our local frutateria.

I have been traveling around the world for the past decade. However this is the longest time I have spent outside of US. You hit every point and on target with it all! People don’t realize how the little things impact your quality of life until you leave and come back! I am hoping to find my way to Lisbon! Visited there last month and loved it! Ric to be that generous her in anything, horns would toot, people are so impatient, mean, cruel and hateful. The other day I asked a friend what was wrong with her dog. The dog was in distress it seemed…the woman started scream , WTF you asking me for….😳. I interact with no one.

Oh, don't get me started on the militaristic vibe in USA. I move to LA from Europe and went to a EDD office with a pack pack. I thought, oh, it's just an office what's the big deal I didn't understand, coming from Europe. But there were 6 up to teeth armed security guards with X-ray machine scanning everyone! I was like WTF is this? And coming from a hike, 've forgotten I had a little swiss knife (the smallest one you can imagine) in my backpack. They asked me Sir, do you have a knife in your backpack? I didn't remember I had this one thing there it's been in my backpack for so long...I said no. They said pull it out and stood around me all of them itchy fingers on their guns I felt like a complete criminal I thought they were going to tase me right there in front of everybody. Just going to a public office...OMG I have never ever experienced anything like that in my life before. I thought this kind of security is only at the airports. I was so surprised this level of anger and paranoia....I was thinking what's wrong with this society being so on edge all the time? So much stress coming from unexpected places....I am moving back to Prague this year (so excited!)

You are blessed. The friends that we have now, were made quickly and easily because we've already got something in common. It takes a certain type of person to move to another country where they do not speak the language. In the states - I have a lot of acquaintances who have a very different outlook on life and how they want to live it. Not bad, just different. Thank you for watching. They have to pay staff, you have to operate a restaurant to understand the cost. To change the oil in the deep fryer daily will cost a fortune very expensive.

@@OurBlackUtopia so then you know the tremendous cost the owners have to deal with. Stop complaining about the food cost, you are making money buy what's necessary and that's all there is to it. We shoul never complain about food cost, clothing and other material things maybe but never food

I ride the train from work everyday& it's stressful, the stench, the guys up & down the isles selling dr**s, angry aggressive people outside, the shootings! I NEED to get the he** out of dodge, working on my husband, but he is not sold...yet!

Does he ride the train with you? If so, then he believes this is normal and is just "part of life"? Cause it ain't. 😉 If he does not ride with you and you've told him your concerns, it makes no difference? 🤨 When Ric, didn't want to make a change that would help my well-being - I threw money at it. When folks didn't want to spend Saturday mornings helping me clean the house, I informed them the budget would be reduced by $300 to hire a cleaning person. If I don't feel safe anymore, and Ric didn't want to move then I would buy a car, a gun, and taking shooting lessons every week. I wouldn't continue to take the train and I would keep spending the money until he understood that i need good logical reasons not to consider a move to a safer environment. Love your channel. However, I’m a white woman living in the U.S., I have a black husband and grown daughters 24&27yrs old. I would love to move to another country. So fun to watch you two thrive! The U.S. so messed up in so many ways.

Totally understand where y’all are coming from. People are mean and nasty to each other in the US for no reason.😩 I was on vacation in Mexico for a week around so many kind people. All that came to an abrupt stop once I got to the airport. 🤦🏾‍♀️ A young man from Texas started yelling and cursing out the woman sitting next to him. He was fighting over the phone charger. He called her every name in the book. Then he verbally attacked anyone who looked his way. I thought to myself…wow back to the BS 🤷🏽‍♀️

How is the life of African immigrants in Portugal?

Most African immigrants do not speak English, so my experience is limited to those who can. The ones that I know well prefer their lives in Portugal and are trying to get their families to Portugal legally. As is the case with any place, those immigrants who have less education, have less opportunities. Racism and classism are alive and well on the globe, and Portugal is no exception. HOWEVER, for African Americans who are used to being the subject of LETHAL racism - the look of racism in Portugal is at least not lethal nor do they tend to police their spaces in the same way that WYPIPO police Black bodies & spaces in the US. In other words, you can have a coffee, sit in the park, or go to the convenience store for skittles in hoodie and live through it without encountering the police.

All the brother's and sister's N-words are unnecessary. When you go anywhere, appearance and intelligence-how you act-are more important because you don't know who was in front of you or who is coming behind you-they are more significant than anything else, particularly in the case of movies and television, which sometimes give a bad image of black people. If the n-word doesn't mean anything, then the history behind it means nothing. Black people make a point to call themselves the N-word, but I can tell you that word has nothing to do with intelligence. Take care, and God bless.

You can eliminate the signs of symptoms but the disease may still exist. The problem is not the N-word. The problem is a lack of knowledge. The media, run by folks who don't look like me, will put whatever they want in tv and film. That is irrelevant because we have no control over it. The only thing we can do is not support it. So, not saying the Nword is not going to correct 400 years of abject oppression and what that does to our psyche, soul, and body.

@@OurBlackUtopiaI don't know why, but the black community still uses a term that your oppressor used against you. It was used during slavery, and hip-hop artists have made money off of it. However, there is another issue: you have groups, actors, actresses, comedians, and hip-hop artists who don't respect the past or its history. When you don't make sense as a person or a group, no one will respect you or take you seriously, and you end up being laughing stock of the community you come from. Take care, and God bless.

We are some of the greatest people on this planet. It doesn't matter that some have decided that those who chose to take back the N word may not be what WYPIPO deem as successful. Pastry shack, pastry shack, pastry shack - baby we have been living here nearly 2 years. Nothing has "happened that we do not understand". But things have DEFINITELY happened in the US that we don't understand. My personal experiences not withstanding. I don't understand why: white people can call the police on us and/or kill us without consequences for walking down the street, playing with toys in the park, trying to buy a toy in Walmart, entering our own home, sleeping at home, sitting in a coffee shop, jogging in the park, jogging on the street...jogging anywhere, having a picnic, just being black. If you LOVE Amerikkka and want to stay we are happy for you but don't try that gaslighting BS over here.
